It feels good to be back. </p><p>Last month I participated in an art challenge organized by Sheila Delgado. She put together a Facebook group many years ago that hosts a bi-annual creative. The group members agree to create every day for 30 days and share images with the group. Some add a challenge within the challenge and so I decided to paint 30 self-portraits in the 30 days. I’m primarily a sculptor and landscape painter, so this goal was designed to push me well outside my comfort zone. </p><p>This winter we experienced a provincial disaster and we were unable to travel for many months. A week before the challenge I had an opportunity to get out through the pass. I quickly threw things in my van, emergency supplies, floor insulation, mattress and a weeks worth of rations and took off for the coast. The drive on our badly damaged road was slow, but free from the snow and ice that had been plaguing us. It was wonderful to get away. </p><p>It wasn't till I arrived at my coastal hideaway that I realized I had forgotten all my art supplies! I have a huge collection in my home studio and didn't really want to buy more, especially as I was quite a distance from an art store. Sheila pointed out that I could use my iPad and make some digital portraits but I had imagined thick luscious oil paint and palette knives, so this was going to be a real challenge! I madly searched my hideaway for paint and found some iridescent and metallic student paint, huge brushes and a small basic sketch pad. Aye yi yi!</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhKMHzm_ehPlJaUbEMSbRtZkTq54H3wABKZxjfeYeUbIylzRuCtxcO9Y3pHKjCfQL_oQjdxDnRRNA4k1W0K3oCWMevAe0qTrsEXSEEOEu9vr2rmVORhONPz_GQ9bvWHRCpzMb2LWioMhU0iyfHLw3GHhC9O7VWH3-cxmAJIJh3pq0XYSATolr0_eD-MqA=s1716" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1716" data-original-width="1373" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhKMHzm_ehPlJaUbEMSbRtZkTq54H3wABKZxjfeYeUbIylzRuCtxcO9Y3pHKjCfQL_oQjdxDnRRNA4k1W0K3oCWMevAe0qTrsEXSEEOEu9vr2rmVORhONPz_GQ9bvWHRCpzMb2LWioMhU0iyfHLw3GHhC9O7VWH3-cxmAJIJh3pq0XYSATolr0_eD-MqA=w512-h640" width="512" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">AFTER THE SHOWER by Sea Dean - digital drawing<br /></td></tr></tbody></table><p>Created on an iPhone using only one finger. I generally use my iPad for digital work and wanted to test out drawing on a small screen. It’s awkward because your finger covers most of the screen where you are trying to draw.</p><p>HOW DID I DO THIS?</p><p>If you have an iphone go to the notes app. Sorry I dont know about other smart phones, but I imagine they have something similar. Click onto a blank page. Top right click on the tool with a pen point and lower right a pen will pop up. Click on this and choose a drawing tool. There is a pen, a highlighter, a crayon, an eraser, a line rule and a return one step tool. There is also an apple pencil tool and another which I haven't figured out. Doodle with your finger or stylus (I use my finger). If you vary the pressure it varies the width of the line. Try them all out and play. My fave tool is the highlighter.</p><p>Once you understand how that works click on any colour dot, each drawing tool can use any colour. If you click the tool twice you can change the intensity and width of line. This is how you can get interesting layers and fill in with that highlighter. Finally if you click on the multicolour dot a whole host of other colours pop up. The variations are endless.</p><p>Let me know if you create something. You can send it to me and I’ll post it.</p><p><br /></p>Sea Dean - Paint a Masterpiecehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356090954132478713noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361929864256396442.post-76385780970155536722022-03-08T09:20:00.000-08:002022-03-08T09:20:07.491-08:0030 Day Creative Gathering - Taster<p>Hi friends,</p><p>I’ve just completed a month of soul searching, self-portrait painting. Phew! What a task. Many of you are fellow artists, who also took the daily painting challenge and set personal achievement goals (you know who you are). This month I will be sharing some of the over 600 fabulous works that were created and also taking you through my journey.</p><p>Organizer extraordinaire, Sheila Delgado has asked me to post my three favourite self-portraits in this opener blog. That is almost more difficult than painting them. I love them all, they are my children and my family and the selection changes daily; however, I have to admit that some, like cream on non homogenized milk, have risen to the top.</p><p>As this was an experimental journey and I am so far, nit a portrait painter, I tried different styles and media. I tried to select one from each similar area. I will go into more detail on how they were created in a later blog.</p><p>My favourite realistic self portrait was day 14 and it also proved the #1 choice of participants in my poll. I titled her EXPECTATION. Funnily enough it is probably the one closest to how I see myself, a sort of improved portrait artist view of who I really am.</p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhy6EeY0MnUhB0Yps0R4Bf6I1hfm-Bd-tUlM66Cseho0r_pH7AHk6v6YTb2qIQlMa1PvRy2SSR1_CVvpaQykOTOr0r--Sl0G9Y--1gNgNzHDqcWeOVh0YFeJVmhWmkIACc1BYejz0eorzMEx2nSQDbcWpL4jjFHDZpIWEN3pkpfBwogjWpz0n67OVzmTQ=s3427" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3427" data-original-width="2446" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhy6EeY0MnUhB0Yps0R4Bf6I1hfm-Bd-tUlM66Cseho0r_pH7AHk6v6YTb2qIQlMa1PvRy2SSR1_CVvpaQykOTOr0r--Sl0G9Y--1gNgNzHDqcWeOVh0YFeJVmhWmkIACc1BYejz0eorzMEx2nSQDbcWpL4jjFHDZpIWEN3pkpfBwogjWpz0n67OVzmTQ=w285-h400" width="285" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">EXPECTATION artist Sea Dean 9” x 12”</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p>My next favourite is a bold abstract. You only have to look at my house to see how much I love black and white. In painting I tend towards bold colour, but here I forced myself to stay pure and I love the result. </p><br /><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhBI0_H7_I2Fo9SqfmJ3iT8qsjesF7BVcyif_W90x6wy-n3Nnw_aoWAyTATfH5Lf5R61XmoefbIJtVj614Kx6OmkNGGmjn8_f80jkLq9nPDafLZdlCpeQ9WRE6nCifdA9UIqv8ONl6vLN9qtUxBpjmFtqES5fwgizLNjFJYN9vYHQph7zr9jGwzrmVcjQ=s3856" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3856" data-original-width="2716" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhBI0_H7_I2Fo9SqfmJ3iT8qsjesF7BVcyif_W90x6wy-n3Nnw_aoWAyTATfH5Lf5R61XmoefbIJtVj614Kx6OmkNGGmjn8_f80jkLq9nPDafLZdlCpeQ9WRE6nCifdA9UIqv8ONl6vLN9qtUxBpjmFtqES5fwgizLNjFJYN9vYHQph7zr9jGwzrmVcjQ=w281-h400" width="281" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">BEING HUMAN artist Sea Dean 9” x 12”</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p>And the third choice is one that only received two votes in my poll and one of them was mine. This is a digital work that evolved over many days. It has a great likeness and I love that it makes me into a multi faceted magical queen like figure, which is very much like I see myself (on a good day). The neck area still needs a bit of work and I will remove the light aura halo, but I find it very unique to me and inspiring.</p><p><br /></p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhAgXF0ft3n_sZC1JwG2PaVShOzqmPE9GwMj6rcE5ydXphcmrPJ8LGTxgnHZCNDt6kaY_rqwfqPiUU43Rg_iI3-MVlpVFqBjkO-1IRvTzc4P9Z-aIXPFux_gGDYkqQXRXvmM7EN0Q9t9eXVmQKsDi5B-zsGRgaNTwzNu1U4p1mIeP1xXjmnavqW0IB0Ng=s2120" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2120" data-original-width="1558" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhAgXF0ft3n_sZC1JwG2PaVShOzqmPE9GwMj6rcE5ydXphcmrPJ8LGTxgnHZCNDt6kaY_rqwfqPiUU43Rg_iI3-MVlpVFqBjkO-1IRvTzc4P9Z-aIXPFux_gGDYkqQXRXvmM7EN0Q9t9eXVmQKsDi5B-zsGRgaNTwzNu1U4p1mIeP1xXjmnavqW0IB0Ng=w470-h640" width="470" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT artist Sea Dean, multi size</td></tr></tbody></table><p>Here is a collage of my 30 self-portraits in chronological order, so you can see how I developed over time and where we are heading this month. </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEidgXhirvG6k4LXNmq90Q84d65E6iLgixvON2nr0syGE2xXXLnFVGNDQ0RqLZ4Bc0WlCno1Vz_WL4dyGHATXKkWbvaKErvdHiK4ZWIX_NOC40APzRy10b6dl6QhXs_jGTVyME9cDvPQCHKVdv7uAic5vOUj69KCLcXMjKEx9G272NFueXMMepB59RAXYQ=s1843" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1843" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEidgXhirvG6k4LXNmq90Q84d65E6iLgixvON2nr0syGE2xXXLnFVGNDQ0RqLZ4Bc0WlCno1Vz_WL4dyGHATXKkWbvaKErvdHiK4ZWIX_NOC40APzRy10b6dl6QhXs_jGTVyME9cDvPQCHKVdv7uAic5vOUj69KCLcXMjKEx9G272NFueXMMepB59RAXYQ=w534-h640" width="534" /></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">30 days of self-portraits by Sea Dean</td></tr></tbody></table><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Sea Dean - Paint a Masterpiecehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356090954132478713noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361929864256396442.post-29639431007935959532022-03-07T00:00:00.004-08:002022-03-08T07:57:53.635-08:0030 Day Self Portrait Challenge<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhlIrT9adklZiCI23_A5S4_o4ijJ-2yGEA5VvDpDkSAn8_IPSqFV-OJvNBR6L8-zlgtUhyKgB5bANkaQQkobZoHCVRPyhEUf9y_CibIRsE2sWQJhbRAu72qN7yGt1dhM4UZV2vcAcDPQZ7TOETahBSTmhE_mTrkwsmkm5GnKMUA7A9Lzmlwx92rytcIdA=s2120" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2120" data-original-width="1558" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEhlIrT9adklZiCI23_A5S4_o4ijJ-2yGEA5VvDpDkSAn8_IPSqFV-OJvNBR6L8-zlgtUhyKgB5bANkaQQkobZoHCVRPyhEUf9y_CibIRsE2sWQJhbRAu72qN7yGt1dhM4UZV2vcAcDPQZ7TOETahBSTmhE_mTrkwsmkm5GnKMUA7A9Lzmlwx92rytcIdA=w470-h640" width="470" /></a></div><p>I’m going to blog a little bit backwards this month. First I will show you a collage of all the work I’ve created in the last 30 days, and then over the next few weeks I will take each painting in chronological order and explain a little bit more about it. </p><p>First an explanation. For the month of February I was part of the 30 day creative gathering on Facebook. This group has gathered for many years every six months to challenge each other to create art daily. We usually make it more interesting by setting goals and this time around I set the goal of creating a self-portrait each day for the entire 30 days.</p><p>At the end of each challenge each one of us creates a collage of the work that we have created during that time, so here is mine. I posted this collage in the group and on my newsfeed and asked for votes on which was the viewer’s favourite. I had already chosen my favourites, but was curious if I was on the right track. From the start there were several clear favourites, but what was most surprising is that 17 of them had 0 votes. Great feedback!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitDUlp81SdvZcqVeaguTiCuKUaFacNl3FV9oJcch6gi4YXvxM0SYTklrmZe60vxAwC742G0PlL6LGLly5NaQkFj1SGxiZUGsJ8X6cE5yWRHT0oeAloQnUQNrh1caROSuMAl9YQWo4zgRJKj7FQlQ8ms9Ke2lLS_hg6tyXONum9Sdmng5rwLDpSZ4bJww=s1843" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1843" data-original-width="1536" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEitDUlp81SdvZcqVeaguTiCuKUaFacNl3FV9oJcch6gi4YXvxM0SYTklrmZe60vxAwC742G0PlL6LGLly5NaQkFj1SGxiZUGsJ8X6cE5yWRHT0oeAloQnUQNrh1caROSuMAl9YQWo4zgRJKj7FQlQ8ms9Ke2lLS_hg6tyXONum9Sdmng5rwLDpSZ4bJww=w534-h640" width="534" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here are the results numbering left to right, top to bottom</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><b>#4 - 7 votes, </b><b>#14 - 7 votes, </b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><b>#15 - 5 votes, </b><b>#24 - 5 votes,</b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">#16 - 2 votes, #20 - 2 votes, #23 - 2<b> votes, </b>#30 - 2 votes</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">#5 - 1 vote, #10 - 1 vote, #11 - 1 vote, #13 - 1 vote, #19 - 1 vote</div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjltqznaogFVO_6ZHLOz4UFnCJrrp6kLDjEnzAWHlbVwMqZQ-jyXaMC3qWsnbxe5-6vnvrTg6ypoZcV4xXGiwKfC_8rehjam6rXUNYf_6eVdw0YTvVlQSKOjLTdzqsXR0k4GQQiMYxryhMxqNQxLF8evEunB6pU_X2Ojb2b8-FltECXvWMcEUGtNgpFgg=s3000" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="2400" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjltqznaogFVO_6ZHLOz4UFnCJrrp6kLDjEnzAWHlbVwMqZQ-jyXaMC3qWsnbxe5-6vnvrTg6ypoZcV4xXGiwKfC_8rehjam6rXUNYf_6eVdw0YTvVlQSKOjLTdzqsXR0k4GQQiMYxryhMxqNQxLF8evEunB6pU_X2Ojb2b8-FltECXvWMcEUGtNgpFgg=w512-h640" width="512" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now I can reveal my favourite is #30 at the top of this post, with #14 a very close 2nd choice.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><b>Which is your favourite? There is always far more to a submission than I plan for, and its I begin to wonder why I do it. Nevertheless Here I am another year. It has snowed but luckily last week was beautiful, which is good, as I chose not to put my winter tires on this year and I would have slid all the way to Lake Country:-/</p><p>I promised a unique collection and here is the first of my 10 paintings. </p><p>It is part of a soft sculpture entitled APPLES. It is a mask, but it is also a painting and a sculpture. The piece can be hung as a sculpture for an interesting memento of this Covid year. Alternatively the mask can be removed for use and the matching painting displayed. Another possibility is to buy the set as a gift for one person, or two. There are so many options.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6BbnDw_32WI/X6oV0q5IxUI/AAAAAAABL64/xD1_X46RC-EBlk5XEd9h-WPNntmnUEqPQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/FF41E5AC-838A-456E-B1CF-DBF7A3414F5F.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2018" data-original-width="2048" height="394" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6BbnDw_32WI/X6oV0q5IxUI/AAAAAAABL64/xD1_X46RC-EBlk5XEd9h-WPNntmnUEqPQCLcBGAsYHQ/w400-h394/FF41E5AC-838A-456E-B1CF-DBF7A3414F5F.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I was in such a rush to get the submission finished that I didn't photograph every sculpture. For me the Advent wreath is as important, if not more so than the Christmas tree itself. In my tradition the wreath consists of greenery, red ribbons and four red candles. My mother’s favorite color is red, so she always enjoyed the lighting of these candles and insisted that the color was a true bright red, not burgundy, orange or pink. Sometimes it’s hard to find red candles in the weeks leading up to Christmas, so I often buy them at other times of the year and stash them for the holidays.</p><p>We used to make a fresh wreath from foraged branches and rather precariously tie the candles on it with wire, but some years ago I found the perfect wrought iron candelabra and it has become much less scary. The first Advent, sometimes sneaks up suddenly almost in mid November and the first candle lighting is usually preceded by madly searching through all the Christmas boxes for the special stand. This year the first Advent is fairly late, so I’ve had mine ready for a while. </p><p><span style="caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: #202122; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 15px;">Where an Advent wreath includes a fifth candle, it is known as the Christ candle and is lit during the Christmas Eve service.</span></p><p style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: #202122; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 15px; margin: 0.5em 0px;">Other variations of the themes celebrated on each of the four Sundays include:</p><ul style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: #202122; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 15px; list-style-image: url("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/skins/Vector/resources/skins.vector.styles/images/bullet-icon.svg?d4515"); margin: 0.3em 0px 0px 1.6em; padding: 0px;"><li style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">The Prophets' Candle, symbolizing hope; the Bethlehem Candle, symbolising faith; the Shepherds' Candle, symbolizing joy; the Angel's Candle, symbolising peace</li></ul><div><span style="color: #202122; font-family: sans-serif;"><span style="caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); font-size: 15px;"><br /></span></span></div><ul style="-webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; caret-color: rgb(32, 33, 34); color: #202122; font-family: sans-serif; font-size: 15px; list-style-image: url("https://en.wikipedia.org/w/skins/Vector/resources/skins.vector.styles/images/bullet-icon.svg?d4515"); margin: 0.3em 0px 0px 1.6em; padding: 0px;"><li style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">Hope–Peace–Joy–Love</li><li style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">Faithfulness–Hope–Joy–Love</li><li style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">Prophets–Angels–Shepherds–Magi</li><li style="margin-bottom: 0.1em;">Faith–Prepare–Joy–Love</li></ul>Sea Dean - Paint a Masterpiecehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356090954132478713noreply@blogger.com1Kelowna, BC, Canada49.8879519 -119.496010627.07605147835142 -154.6522606 72.699852321648578 -84.3397606tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361929864256396442.post-81606486985612723882020-11-08T02:23:00.004-08:002020-11-29T09:07:49.070-08:00September catch up<p>I realised yesterday that I never completed my posts for the September 30 day Creative Gathering. I was posting every day on Facebook and neglected to blog. This time around I worked on a mixed bag of masks, furniture makeovers, photography and iPad drawing. I suppose that is very reflective of my work at the moment. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0YZicCXlNIA/X6fEAym2VwI/AAAAAAABL6o/3_eb9w54dDMiW-nQzZ5amYU56U7xWVhEQCPcBGAsYHg/s3000/IMG_9576.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0YZicCXlNIA/X6fEAym2VwI/AAAAAAABL6o/3_eb9w54dDMiW-nQzZ5amYU56U7xWVhEQCPcBGAsYHg/s320/IMG_9576.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The first 12 days</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UxzK7YUBoP4/X6fEAz2kaiI/AAAAAAABL6o/2U0ht7vH63QB2-z59ETNQvE71D1exruYQCPcBGAsYHg/s3000/IMG_9579.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UxzK7YUBoP4/X6fEAz2kaiI/AAAAAAABL6o/2U0ht7vH63QB2-z59ETNQvE71D1exruYQCPcBGAsYHg/s320/IMG_9579.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The second 12 days</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ELdssHvG0s/X6fEA-Wmf3I/AAAAAAABL6o/g7fEpkLHy9k5b--c5cOeIdG8FnzIKkz7gCPcBGAsYHg/s3000/IMG_9626.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3000" data-original-width="3000" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0ELdssHvG0s/X6fEA-Wmf3I/AAAAAAABL6o/g7fEpkLHy9k5b--c5cOeIdG8FnzIKkz7gCPcBGAsYHg/s320/IMG_9626.JPG" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">The whole 30 days (one somehow managed to get in twice)</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">As usual it was lovely to gather and share. It’s hard to believe. My work has been selected to show for something like the tenth year. The gallery has formulated some out of the box ideas on how to proceed during Covid and still make it an exciting event. As one of the artists, I’ve also come up with interesting art with my usual creativity, that will spark conversation and hopefully cause a sell out. More on that closer to the event (they are still in progress).</p><p>This year the usually very social opening events have a Covid twist, which I predict will result in buyers feeling more relaxed and ready to buy the more unusual pieces before anyone else has a chance. Groups of eight invited and ticketed guests will have private showings pre-opening. during the private showings the big names will likely be snapped up first, as there are no refills, so no waiting for another gem to surface. I hope the innovative strategies will result in an even larger fundraising total to keep the gallery running another year.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q8Kdg4VDAgE/X6Q7PkwJfvI/AAAAAAABL5w/BJpFAyaBcK8czoBhRt-vDMW9v9xkdroZACLcBGAsYHQ/s1908/0F1D530D-5CEC-449F-8E94-419600ADCAE3.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1908" data-original-width="1382" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-q8Kdg4VDAgE/X6Q7PkwJfvI/AAAAAAABL5w/BJpFAyaBcK8czoBhRt-vDMW9v9xkdroZACLcBGAsYHQ/w464-h640/0F1D530D-5CEC-449F-8E94-419600ADCAE3.jpeg" width="464" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Sea Dean - Paint a Masterpiecehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356090954132478713noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361929864256396442.post-53990978951971978362020-09-20T23:30:00.001-07:002020-09-20T23:30:01.831-07:00Frida at Lake Country Art Gallery<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_e9swioS56E/X1D60C14aBI/AAAAAAABJek/vT93Q7AVuao9k5tvndL707csZS2cOGqkwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/9AA054EC-F5B4-4F6A-963F-CD8968E3C149.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1491" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_e9swioS56E/X1D60C14aBI/AAAAAAABJek/vT93Q7AVuao9k5tvndL707csZS2cOGqkwCLcBGAsYHQ/w291-h400/9AA054EC-F5B4-4F6A-963F-CD8968E3C149.jpeg" width="291" /></a></div><p>This exhibition is the first one I’ve submitted to since the pandemic began. Mum went into care and it seems unlikely she will be back home. At year end I sold the largest sculpture in my portfolio and the future hinted at more. Then Covid 19 shifted my personal priorities. I set up an Etsy Mask shop to support the cause. My trip to celebrate passing into the third age was axed and then in July, my friend of 25 years died. I now know more about dying and paperwork around it than I ever wanted to. I’ve been on a steep learning curve and there is no rest ahead. </p><p>The whole world and everyone I know has had a tough year and we are all trudging zombie like towards 2021. However, it seems like I’ve had to process more than most. I keep thinking about the movie Titanic and I feel like I’m standing on the stern peering down into the abyss. How about you?</p><p>Anyway, life goes on and my internet friend Sheila Delgado has been doing an admirable job hosting the twice yearly Creative Gathering on Facebook. Each participating artist and crafter is soldiering on, and I’m thoroughly enjoying each new work they post. There is a great feeling of camaraderie and support. What a solid, reliable set of worldwide friends I have. Thank God for the internet.</p><p>Above are the first 12 postings I have made to the Creative Gathering. We are allowed one piece a day and we each post in the daily album. It is so interesting to see the changes in rhythm, color and media as time goes on. I’m sure we are each influenced a little by the others.</p><p>One of my favorites is the work produced by choosing a magazine image and attempting to mix the main colors. I think these are art works in their own right.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1121" data-original-width="1286" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WUbyTN8C0L0/X2bN8aCkLSI/AAAAAAABKB4/tWMkBqw-v1Ubv29XiZcIeBFz6aPKBftFgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/A19CB7DC-5424-4574-8EC6-142090DE6D7C.jpeg" width="320" /></div><p>Then there are the wonderful character faces of </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UR1APHNOiM/X2bOT_lYGII/AAAAAAABKCQ/8zR3Rd7zuJQ8Xb2k_OmcnNmmiNht9qkWgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1808/1FF9B5BC-2CC7-4D34-9BD3-7D2D88C131F1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1808" data-original-width="1198" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_UR1APHNOiM/X2bOT_lYGII/AAAAAAABKCQ/8zR3Rd7zuJQ8Xb2k_OmcnNmmiNht9qkWgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/1FF9B5BC-2CC7-4D34-9BD3-7D2D88C131F1.jpeg" /></a></div><p><br /></p><p>Take a look on Facebook - 30 Day Creative Gathering - Friend me and ask for an invite</p><p>And Etsy - My Mask Shop - <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/SEA2YOU" style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;">https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/SEA2YOU</a></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Sea Dean - Paint a Masterpiecehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01356090954132478713noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7361929864256396442.post-21436784259179108342020-09-06T18:00:00.001-07:002020-09-06T18:00:04.645-07:0030 Day Creative Gathering - First week<p>Well, well, well, I returned to my blog after too long away, and discovered they had completely redesigned Blogger. I’m sure it will be better once I get used to all the changes, but for now you will have to watch me stumble around.</p><p>It’s back to school time and traditionally thats when artists knuckle down to preparing for the holiday rush. Coming up are both Canadian and USA Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and of course Christmas, Hanukkah and all the other winter ceremonies and holidays. And winter IS coming ... I look out onto the surrounding trees and see definite tinges of orange and yellow. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gtAQD1XU1qY/X1BLaQdQJfI/AAAAAAABJbc/ibRKT-jCAzQ0i6m3BccCiCl3sbz2u5M0ACPcBGAsYHg/s3264/IMG_9286.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gtAQD1XU1qY/X1BLaQdQJfI/AAAAAAABJbc/ibRKT-jCAzQ0i6m3BccCiCl3sbz2u5M0ACPcBGAsYHg/s640/IMG_9286.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div>With September comes the 30 Day Creative Gathering on Facebook. The subject must be female and only one piece. I immediately thought of <a href="http://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/sea-dean/4045-cleopatra-eye/205426" target="_blank">CLEOPATRA EYE</a>, showcasing the wonderful eyes of Elizabeth Taylor, a striking vignette which hasn't had much exposure locally. I also have plans for a portrait of my mother and a whole family portrait, but I doubt either of those would be finished in time, especially with the beautiful spring like weather beckoning me to get out after the last few months captivity.<br />
<br />
However, FRIDA VI is more representative of my recent work and more saleable, she is the better choice. So Frida it is. The portrait is finished and I love it, but until a painting is sold it is always a candidate for a bit of tweaking and I see a few opportunities to dabble.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nHqrjF2ZmQc/XvoFVIlezpI/AAAAAAABIg8/flBqEmu52l8Tp1DsCsKuZ8M6dhs01W2LQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/B46C085E-8CC9-43C0-9478-53F037C55782.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1278" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nHqrjF2ZmQc/XvoFVIlezpI/AAAAAAABIg8/flBqEmu52l8Tp1DsCsKuZ8M6dhs01W2LQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/B46C085E-8CC9-43C0-9478-53F037C55782.jpeg" width="255" /></a></div>
<br />
Firstly, although turquoise is fashionable, I think the background is too intense for most buyers, so I’ve been reading up. I know from past experience that changing backgrounds is tricky and usually leads to retouching the whole portrait. This is because I integrate the background colour into the subject as reflected colour. Not wanting to do a complete repaint, I must therefore keep the background on the warm blue side; this adds complication as I also need to cool the colour to make it recede more.<br />
<br />
More research required, but so far I’ve found this comprehensive article helpful in my decision making process.<br />

<div style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleTallBody; font-size: 19px;">
I have fresh dill in my victory garden, so I decided to make this salad. I’ve only ever eaten it as a kosher breakfast item in Israel in 1979. I’ve never made it, but often remember those wonderful breakfasts at the Hotel Continental in Jerusalem. An era long past.</div>
<div style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleTallBody; font-size: 19px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: UICTFontTextStyleTallBody; font-size: 19px;">
I didn't look for the recipe till after I had made this, so being a purist I only used fresh dill, greek yoghurt and sliced English cucumber. I admit lemon, vinegar and salt would add to the flavour, but I don't remember onions in the Jerusalem delight. It was quite bland, but perfect as a morning wake up to prepare for a hot day.<div>

It tasted old, so I decided to create. I found some dutch chocolate powder and some whole chilli that would improve it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FGL2Vle46jY/Xt2-Xycjo8I/AAAAAAABHmw/F4FtT4uxqT4nSgsjT_9YE_wETkXUEs04gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/FB0C1476-BC44-4521-904F-6F0CF4C7F016.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1597" data-original-width="1600" height="319" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-FGL2Vle46jY/Xt2-Xycjo8I/AAAAAAABHmw/F4FtT4uxqT4nSgsjT_9YE_wETkXUEs04gCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/FB0C1476-BC44-4521-904F-6F0CF4C7F016.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
1. I melted about 1/2 cup white chocolate chunks over hot water in a double dip bowl in the microwave.<br />
2. When melted I added a large heaping teaspoon of dutch chocolate powder (two would have been better) and stirred until smooth.<br />
3. I then added a 2 teaspoons whole chilli seeds and mixed.<br />
4. I was going to drop naked blobs on parchment paper, but then I caught sight of a cornflake box.<br />
5. I sprinkled a deep layer of cornflakes onto parchment paper on a broiler tin and dropped teaspoons of the chocolate mix on top.<br />
6. Then I sprinkled more cornflakes on top of that and placed the tray in fridge for 15 mins.<br />
7. I removed from the parchment and stored in a ziplock in the fridge.<br />

PRE ORDER</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Thank you for bearing with me the last month as I do my bit to get people masked up. Wherever you are in the world my thoughts and blessings are with you.</div>
<br />
Most countries around the world are advising people wear masks to protect themselves and others. I hope these will become a conversation piece to show the grandkids, but right now they are a necessary accessory. So why not look good and face the world with a glimpse of your style.<br />
<br />
My masks are made with great attention to detail using quality cotton and natural fabric. I consult with each person to find the most appropriate choices for their lifestyle. Various options include moisture wicking lining, organic, shaped or comfort styles, ear loops, head elastic and ear savers.<br />
<br />
Now for the purpose of this blog. A couple of months ago I was part of a Facebook gathering of artists organised by Sheila Delgado. During the month long event, I held a spot contest and six friends around the world won a prize. Sadly, while I was organising addresses CoVid19 hit. Shipping descended into chaos and I decided to hold off until thing settled down. Thankfully our postal system is starting to normalise, so the time has come to ship.<br />
<br />
Below is a full visual of fabric and styles available at time of writing. Some designs are custom orders which take a couple of days, or pre-orders with fabric due soon. Contest winners, please select your favourite which will be promptly shipped to you.<br />
<br />
And... If you are not a winner, add your favourite in comments or contact me to purchase.<br />

I couldn't believe how long it has been since I posted. Sorry!<br />
<br />
You will recall that back in April I set up some of my designs to print on face masks made in the USA. I had little idea that this would send me into a complex world of controversy and sewing circles. I have been totally transfixed, if you were amazed by the toilet paper rush, you’ve seen nothing compared to the 100% cotton and elastic war.<br />
<br />

<br />
My first foray was to find a printer in Canada to either put my designs on ready made masks, or print my designs on fabric which I could have made into masks locally. I wanted to find a local printer or at least in Western Canada to ease the shipping nightmare. I finally found one. 250 miles away, but their customer service was so slow I almost grew a beard waiting (yes I’m female).<br />
<br />
Next I looked for a local maker who would sew my fabric. I found a few and one in particular who, like me, doesn't qualify for any of these Covid assistance programs and is happy to take piecework. She helped produce style samples and the Cooper Collection above. They are double layer and come with full head white elastic, white sewing. (The pic shows different elastic).<br />
<br />
The lead time on printing my own fabric in insane, so next! The sewers all want to use quilting fabric to cut multi layers with a rotary cutter. Quilting fabric is a standard width and fairly standard thread count, which makes it easy for them. However I’m not sure how many people want to wear home decor prints on their face, especially those of the male persuasion. Solids, especially black, white, grey, blue and beige etc. are sold out everywhere or sell as soon as they are posted online. So I entered the fabric and notion war.<br />
<br />
I found both old and new suppliers, mostly 5,000 miles away across Canada. I decided niches, organic, wildlife, fruit, wine, brights, first nation, designer abstract and natural moisture wicking. I ordered, with lead times up to 6 weeks.<br />
<br />
So now I wait.........<br />
<br />
In the meantime I went through my stash and discovered many beautiful natural fabrics and I’m in the process of having them made up into masks. So, like Damien Hurst, I am in artistic production with a stream of collections.<br />
<br />
First up some regular 100% cotton samples for $10 (above). For my USA friends thats about $7 and I can ship fast in an envelope, so shouldn't take too long.<br />
<br />
Next up some exclusive 100% cotton designer fabric masks (below). A Sea Dean with black elastic and sewing for a bit of class. They come with matching ear savers.<br />

One of the things I keep reading and hearing about this enforced isolation, is how much people are enjoying the time off. Sure, it’s difficult to be stuck inside and there are mental challenges whether you are single and completely alone like me, or cooped up with your loved ones.<br />
<br />
But, back to the positive ....<br />
These are some of the comments I’ve been hearing about the pluses of lockdown<br />
<br />
Time to think<br />
Time with family and loved ones<br />
Home cooked meals<br />
Decluttering<br />
Catching up on the list<br />
Fresher air<br />
Less noise pollution<br />
Learning to grow organic food<br />
Learning to bake bread<br />
Less advertising (emails)<br />
Letting go of the unimportant<br />
Finding joy in small things<br />
<br />
For the past 50 years or so, time has been a real luxury. The world has been moving at a faster and faster pace as people try to get ahead and gain advantage over the competition. In February/March 2020, as the world ground to a halt, people collectively experienced an “aha” moment. I think it will cause many to reassess and head in a different direction.<br />
<br />
With retirement looming in mid year, I had already started to make plans for a change of lifestyle. It remains to be seen if it will all be available when the dust settles. First Brexit came along and messed with my retirement dreams and now this. Some things I’m managing to act on a bit earlier than I planned, like my victory garden. Others have been put on hold indefinitely.<br />
<br />
I’ve been trying to grasp what the effect of Covid19 has had on my life and just now it came into focus; it’s like watching a train wreck in slow motion. Very, very slow motion, because the carriages haven't yet come to rest and they wont for a very long time. At least I now have the time to enjoy watching the transition.<br />

I have not heard one report of someone who is truly isolating getting CoVid19. One of the challenges is that large amounts of the population are working in “essential services” and cannot isolate. Another problem are those who don’t follow guidelines, deciding to pick and choose”: Their choices affect others and sadly, as we’ve seen, it’s the aged and vulnerable that suffer and die.</div>
<br />
I believe it is each person’s responsibility, that if they choose not to isolate they should shield others from their possible contagion in any way they can. Covering the nose and mouth is a simple way to do that. OK, so I get that medical masks should be conserved for essential services, but most governments are now recommending cloth masks in public and they are becoming mandatory for travel.<br />
<br />
In a perfect world, every body would follow disease control guidelines and the world could be declared CoVid19 free quickly. It seems the tighter the restrictions and the better enforced, the quicker a country can turn around. A few pockets have succeeded, for instance, New Zealand, because they are an island with a strong government and compliant population. However, most of the rest of the world and most notably the USA, are struggling.<br />
<br />

<br />
I believe it is our duty to do everything we can. One of the stumbling blocks is that the general population don't consider face covering cool, trendy, fashionable, sensible or necessary.<br />
<br />
One step that can be taken is coming up with a catchy name for face masks, because I’m told that Marketplace is blocking advertising of them, unless of course you pay to advertise.<br />
<br />
Mask is the correct term, but people consider it false advertising as they wrongly equate the term “mask” with N95 medical protection.<br />
<br />
The federal government in Canada are starting to call cloth masks Face or Facial Coverings. Apparently they have the same problem with terminology.<br />
<br />
“Cough covers” is OK but doesn't relate to those who don't cough and CoVid19 tends to be most contagious before people have symptoms, which is why it has been so difficult to stop.<br />
<br />
Shield or guard are also a bit misleading.<br />
<br />
Anyone......?<br />
<br />
Above are some of my many designs in an effort to make facial covering fashionable. Just like any designer fashion, they come with a price tag that covers design, manufacture, printing, and so far shipping. And it comes down to what price you put on your life and the lives of those you come into contact with. I believe in covering in public, but choose to make a statement and do it in style.<br />
