HOW TO MAKE A PAINTING THAT SELLS - Ms Chicken Goes to the Beach - GOLDEN SPRAY - FREE GIFT

GOLDEN SPRAY
Orange and Umber Series
This is my auction painting on Daily Paintworks today. It is much brighter in real life, being mainly white, cream, cadmium orange, raw umber and gold. Part of a series of 5 Orange and Umber paintings. It would absolutely spectacular in a fashionable gold frame. If you would like to purchase the whole series, contact me and I will send you an invoice with the series discount and combined shipping.

HOW TO MAKE A PAINTING THAT SELLS

QUOTE OF THE DAY - "Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep" Scott Adams

So today I started a review of 2013. I know there are some paintings I want to tweek, which I will start playing with. This is one of the hardest things for an Artist to do. It involves self critique and destroying work into which you have put a lot of time. That can be painful, It doesn't have to be though, because once you take the plunge a whole new shiny vision starts to emerge.

Some artists completely eradicate their work by brushing off (for pastel artists) to getting out the gesso and painting over the canvas (oil and acrylic artists). Others study the good and bad points of their work and adjust. When a painting has serious compsitional flaws, it may be easier to paint over it, but sometimes a small adjustment makes a painting sing.

Cat # 13100 Spring Beach
Original Challenge Photo by Evhe

Here is an example, SPRING BEACH.

This painting was a challenge entry, painted from the photo of another artist and originally titled Spring Beach. I loved this photo because of the simple design and I was excited to paint it. When acrylic paint is wet is has a much more lively look, much like oil paint, but sometimes, as it dries it darkens and the colours change and some of that edge goes missing. This is the hardest thing to master as an acrylic artist, predicting how much the colour will change. I think that may be what happened in this painting.

On reflection, I liked the simplicity of the piece, but it seemed too lonely. If you look at the original photo, there was a fence in the foreground, which I had elected to eliminate to emphasize a more natural look. I think the painting would have been better if the fence was left in, but I would have moved the upright post on the right a little towards center to stop the eye traveling off the side of the painting.

Cat # 13177 Ms Chicken goes to the beach
However, another opportunity came along .... Ms Chicken came to visit me. She saw the painting and loved the emptiness. She insisted I take her to a beach like that, so we had a day in Bournemouth and Poole and I did some sketches of her on the beach. When we got home she asked if I would paint her into the scene, which I did and put it on her travel website. Not only did this make Ms Chicken happy, but the painting sold soon after.

So it just goes to show that one simple change could be all a painting needs to make it fly off the wall.

These images are copyright protected by law and the original is sold. However prints are available here.

This is a series showing the progression from a light and airy impressionist type painting to a bold abstract. Each step of the way with Sunlit Walk I, II, III, and IV the same scene is explored and altered. Looking at the first and last paintings together you can see quite a variation, but the change is fairly subtle between each step.

This series would look wonderful along the entrance hallway to your entertainment area. I can ship all four together if you wish. Currently you can take advantage of the auctions of Sunlit Walk I and Sunlit Walk II and combine them with Sunlit Walk III and Sunlit Walk IV which can be purchased via my Daily Paintworks gallery.

To guarantee you get the whole set, choose the BUY NOW button on the auction paintings. Send me an email through Daily Paintworks if you intend shipping them together.

Of course there are no guarantees with an auction, so if you want to be sure that you have the whole series, click on the BUY NOW button below and you can pay for the complete set plus shipping in one purchase and I will ship tomorrow.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - TOULOUSE-LAUTREC - POST IMPRESSIONIST

IMAGE OF HENRI TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
Henri Marie Raymonde de Toulouse-Lautrec was born 24 November 1864 at Albi, France. His ancestors were the Counts of Toulouse. He was not born with a disability as many think; he broke both legs in 1879 and this stunted his growth. Prior to that he was an avid sportsman, but was forced to find a new interest and turned to painting.

Henri was schooled in Paris at the Lycee Fontanes and afterwards he returned to Albi in 1878. From 1882 on he studied with Bonnat and Cormon alongside Emile Bernard and Vincent van Gogh. In 1884 he set up a studio in Montmartre, Paris. He painted his friend Vincent in 1887, somewhat mimicking the artist's wild brushstrokes but with pastels.

His style was quite unique, very graphic and lending itself well to the poster art he is famous for. He was inspired by Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism but his main influence was Edgar Degas. He also adapted Japanese print design.

Henri loved the night life of Paris and was famous for drinking and debauchery. He painted what he saw and gives a fascinating glimpse of street life in the Belle Epoch era. In 1898, as a result of his life of excess, he ended up in a sanitorium, and on 9 September 1901 he died at Chateau de Malrome, Gironde, France. He was only 37 years old.

UG2BK = You've got to be kidding.

I discovered this text abbreviation recently and it seemed like a perfect name for a painting. I  have the urge to create some large abstracts, so today, I pulled out a prepped canvas and went for it.

Abstracts are strange creatures, no matter how much you plan, they have a life of their own and you have to go with the flow. As they say, "Resistance is futile".

There were several stages during the creation of this work that the phrase UG2BK crossed my mind and I almost abandoned it. However, I persevered and I love the result. Unless this sells quickly it may become a keeper. Some areas of this painting appear quite orange in the image, but there is no orange pigment in the painting. What you are seeing, is the glow of copper metallic paint under light. It is a lovely rich colour and because the paint was thick is has created some interesting ridges which catch the light in different ways.

HOW THE UG2BK WAS CREATED

1. The base coat is magenta.
2. I added some string and arranged it in an organic pattern.
3. Then I applied liquid acrylic with the intention of creating a flow painting. However, my liquid acrylic had other plans and I got no flow instead.
4. I changed to brushes and palette knife, moving the liquid up to the edge where I had previously placed artist's tape to stop drips falling over the edge. (I was doing this on a flat surface)
5. Next I added Copper tentacles and as the liquid acrylic started to dry I etched some patterns into it.
6. I left it to dry overnight.
7. I took photos and studied them, enlarging and rotating until I decided what to do next.
8. I loved the copper but it looked better when I zoomed in so that it continued off the edge of the painting, so I expanded the copper sections and sent them over the edge.
9. I wanted to incorporate more magenta to tie the under-painting into the whole, so I made it into a glaze and created swirls of translucent paint throughout the painting. As the transparent paint crossed the bright copper and lime green it created new and exciting colours which urged me on.
10. I painted the edge of the deep gallery wrap canvas black and added touches of black in the painting to balance all the brights.
11. To finish and refine I added my signature dots, applied dry acrylic and thick lines of copper until the painting told me it was done.
12. Voila UG2BK and I love it!

Fashionable or not, my favourite type of painting is the free style of semi abstract expressionist or luminous arts. This type of thing makes my heart sing. I look at the interaction between the turquoise and orange and it makes me want to dance.

This painting was pure flow. I started by selecting the colours and painting varied stripes of them onto the canvas. Placement was part of the natural flow. The next addition were the leaves on the left and wanting to balance the composition I then added ferns to the lower part of the painting. The leaves seemed to need some anchoring to the rest of the composition, so I added branches to the tops of some trees and more layers of paint over the foliage. Next came Bronze highlights on the leaves and ferns.

The trick with a painting like this is to know when to stop. I was having so much fun, that was the difficult part. I hope you like it.

FREE GIFT - FALL MOUNTAIN by Sea Dean and TWO openings

It feels so good to get back into the studio and paint. Here is my latest.

FALL MOUNTAIN by Sea Dean photographed in natural afternoon light

FALL MOUNTAIN
8" x 10" Gallery Wrap Canvas
FALL MOUNTAIN by Sea Dean photographed in halogen light
ORIGINAL BY SEA DEAN
On auction at Daily Paintworks

I've been wanting to create a larger version of "Mount Washington in Afternoon Sun" for about a year now. The original was liquid acrylic and this is heavy body. I also wanted to try the black under-painting style of Artists like Edward B. Gordon. In fact I have left the edges of this painting raw and the sides are painted black which create a strong presence. No need to frame of course.

I loved the first in the series and I'm even happier with this version which is larger than most of my daily paintings at 8" x 10". Perhaps I will make one even larger. Interested?

I photographed this under halogen light and it looks so much better in the flesh; I will try again in daylight,

PAINTING HOLIDAY?

It's always good to have a change and regular readers will have noticed that I've had a bit of a painting holiday since mid October. In the past month I have posted only 3 new works and I've placed some of my large paintings on auction at Daily Paintworks. One of those 3 paintings was a commission, much larger than my recent work and I'm pleased to say that the new owners were as pleased as punch.

Detail from Golden Tiger commission
It's been good to drop the daily painting pressure and turn to other tasks. I've cleared my studio and found some rarely used paints and others that I've never used, so you will see some new colours emerging in the next few weeks.

I've also been sorting, framing and creating for two exhibitions. The "activist Art" exhibition opened last Friday in Penticton, BC and runs till January 2nd. The annual under 100 show (U100) at Lake Country Art Gallery, BC, now has 22 of my works chosen from over 500 recent paintings selected, framed and delivered.

The U100 requirement is 10 - 20 pieces under 100 sq inches including the frame. That was a challenge because I like wide frames on small paintings, but this show works best with a larger painting in a narrower frame or on Gallery Wrap Canvas is. The competition is fierce with 700 works on display, so standing out in the crowd is challenging to say the least.

My most recent work, is all on Windpower or Aquarelle and requires a mat and glassed frame. I found that most of the frames I had on hand were larger than 100 sq inches so, I had to cannibalize other framed work and find some small finished Gallery Wrap Canvases, (something I have few of). Anyway that is now over and all I have to do is show up looking pretty at the opening on Saturday. If you're in the area come on down and enjoy the best show of the year.
