More from my fellow intrepid and brave artists attempting the 30 paintings in 30 days here

This painting was inspired by recent documentaries on the Amazon rainforest. Although I paint a lot of pets, I'm always afraid to paint people. When I get over my fear I love the process. Portraits take on a life of their own. A deep connection is created between the subject and the artist. A point is reached when suddenly the painting comes to life. Breathing life into inanimate paint on your canvas is a very exciting experience.

While creating this Shaman I had the feeling that he was encouraging my work. The portrait went through many stages and sat unfinished in my studio at the stage below for some months. I was pleased that I was able to finish it today and add it to the list of my 30 paintings in 30 days.

As I look at the painting in front of me I feel the expression and eyes look different in the image. The expression also changes depending on how large the image is which is quite strange. It is also not apparent in this image that the Shaman is looking straight out of the painting at the viewer. It's possible that this is caused by the Mona Lisa sfumato effect I built in to the sides of the mouth and eyes. It is certainly a very magical painting. There is a fair bit of texture in the feathers created with Liquitex Heavy Gel Gloss. I've also varied the thickness of the paint, being thin and bright in some areas and thick and rich in others. I'm quite proud of the result.
