Taken from STARRY NIGHT. We are all familiar with Van Gogh's famous paintings, but how often do we look at the detail? I was amazed at the complex colour and brush strokes in just this one area of his painting.

When you observe a masterpiece it's always a good idea to pay attention to the detail. I've noticed that you can cut a famous painting into many squares and each one will contain something astonishing: It could be a colour, a brush stroke, a vignette or even weighty white space. For some reason the area around the signature is often the most interesting. Check it out the next time you visit a museum gallery.
