SILENT AUCTION STANDINGS

Hi All,

With all the Black Friday and Cyber Monday stuff you're probably as tired as I am of the hype. I'm a little late getting this out but you still have a few hours. For those that follow my blog and Daily Paintworks Gallery you know that I've been holding a SILENT AUCTION during November. Bids are accepted up until tonight, November 30th at midnight PST.

So what is on offer??? Yes some paintings have lively bidding, but many others are still at $15. That's right, $15 for high quality paintings, many of which took me several days to paint with the best quality paint, mediums, varnish and canvas.

If you are out of town, you can go ahead and bid and I will ship at cost. If you are in Canada or the USA the parcel should arrive in time for the holidays even with regular mail.

Below are some print screens of my Daily Paintworks SILENT AUCTION gallery, but you can click here http://www.dailypaintworks.com/Artists/sea-dean-2797 and see them on the actual website. Bids are first come, first served from the time stamp on the emails. I will endeavor to contact you if you have been outbid, but your best option is to bid high to ensure you knock out the competition. I update the notes on each painting as I receive new bids, so make sure you see the latest bids.

It's easy to bid. Just sent an email to me at blueskyredearth@live.ca, reply to this email, or send an email through the button on the Daily Paintworks gallery page.

Have fun and I hope you win.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - WINSTON CHURCHILL THE ARTIST

The Tower of Katoubia Mosque by Winston Churchill - a gift to President Rooseveldt
30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965

Winston Churchill was much more than a famous statesman, he loved travel, especially with his extended family, and he loved to paint. His chosen medium was oil and some of his work is quite spectacular. His favourite locations were Morocco and the South of France as can be seen from the two paintings I have chosen.

It's very interesting to see the difference in the treatment of light between these two paintings. The south of France and Morocco are across the Mediterranean from each other, but the atmospheric conditions are so different that they shatter similar sunlight in different ways. The desert conditions create crisper and more colourful shadows, while the dramatic tree shadows in the second painting, although darker, are more grey. The clouds also give an idea of the weather with the French clouds being softer and the Moroccan ones sparse and outlined against the bluer sky.

Click here for a wonderful article on Winston Churchills love of painting.

A Distant View of a Town in the South of France by Winston Churchill

ANCIENT HILL - Sea Dean

My painting of a vineyard near where I live, shows similar colour to those chosen by Winston Churchill for the south of France. Our climate however, is probably closer to that of Morocco and unless the land is irrigated our hills are covered in dry grassland and conifer trees as seen on the distant hill. Luckily we have plenty of water in our large local lakes, so irrigation is relatively simple.

This painting is on exhibit at the Lake Country Art Gallery Under 100 Exhibition. However, if you love it, contact me; I will check availability with the gallery and send it to you for $100 plus shipping. The public gallery needs all the support they can get, so I honour their commission if sold before the end of the show.

BLOWING IN THE WIND - A simple storage solution

BLOWING IN THE WIND in polar white 8" x 10" mat
Isn't she sweet? A little girl with a dandelion clock. When I was a child I remember many happy hours watching the seeds float away on the wind.

STORAGE SOLUTION

Artists always seem to have a challenge with storing their inventory. The usual solution is to slide it under the bed, but that space only holds a certain amount. Paintings and frames can get damaged easily if they aren't stored properly and it is often hard to find a particular piece. I've tried many solutions for tracking and storage, but this time I think I've hit on the best solution.

For the last month I've been busy mounting each of my small paintings in mats or on archival board. Each mat has a backing board and to this I have attached a short bio with my image. These are then placed in a close fitting clear archival bag and it is taped shut. Now the painting is protected and easy to view or mount. I love my new 8" x 10" mat packs because they are so practical.

I store my packaged paintings in banker boxes; the ones with the separate lids are strongest and easy to stack and store. When I need to restock a gallery, display my work for a client, organize a show or submission, it is all very simple. I store each size in a different box so they are easy to locate. The paintings can be flipped through quickly and I don't have to hunt through piles of work or worry about keeping them in numerical order because they are easy to see through the bag.

So the painting above is ready to ship. All I have to do is place some corrugated cardboard front and back and slip it into an envelope. Eh voila! Again it is easy to pop into exhibition frames, then remove and repackage after the show.

I'm in the process of designing a system for my larger paintings and I will blog about that at a later date. In the meantime you may purchase BLOWING IN THE WIND with the link below. The button will take you to my gallery page with more detail and submit payment section.

CURIOSITY ACEO

WHY OWN A SEA DEAN ORIGINAL?
14 REASONS TO COLLECT SEA DEAN FINE ART

1. Each work of art is original and one of a kind

Each painting is a moment in time – a feeling, a thought, a hope, a dream; a treasure of an experience had once and never have again. No two people have the same experience with a work of art. When you receive the painting, it becomes yours and you begin creating your own moments with it – your hopes and dreams and thoughts and feelings. I initiate the piece, but you complete it.

2. I use the best materials

All my original works are created using the best canvas, paint and materials available.

3. Buy directly from the artist

When you buy a piece of art you usually only interact with the sales staff, or owner of the shop. You never get the chance to meet the artist, to inquire about your favorite pieces or ask about their process. But when you buy art directly from me, I make myself available to you! Not only do you get to learn about the piece you’re purchasing, but you can ask questions and get to know me. You’re not just a collector, you've met the artist personally!
HERALD OF CHANGE II - Raw Edge Offset Mounted 8" x 10"

All my "Raw Edge" paintings are now offset mounted and ready to frame. Such a pretty and unusual gift.
HERALD OF CHANGE

4. Save money by going direct

My prices are based on the size of the piece, its complexity, the materials that I use, and how much time it takes me to research and paint. The price hasn’t been inflated by middle men. So you save money in the long run and receive personalized service directly from the artist!

5. You are not only investing in the art, but the artist

Think about it: we don’t hesitate to spend money on food, clothing and social activities, so why not invest in someone who has touched your heart and sparked your imagination? Professional artists like myself work hard every day to create amazing things and we can continue to do so with the support of our patrons. You are an integral part of the art world.

PASTEL SKY I with mat
Many of my 6" x 4" original paintings are now also available in polar white mat with backing board, artists biography and archival bag. An example above. I would be thrilled with such a lovely gift. Click here to see all my framed and matted works.

PASTEL SKY I

6. My work is constantly evolving

There is something for everyone in my collection – figure, animal, portrait, landscape, nature, abstract, etc., but I am constantly learning and evolving. My work moves through different phases as I find new materials and tools and delving into new arenas. If you like a particular series of my work, now is the time to buy because I might never create something like that again!

7. Recession? What recession? My business is growing … be a part of it!

My business has grown so much in the last several years and is more widely appreciated than ever before. I've lost count of the countries where I have shipped my work and my collectors continue to snap up my latest creations and commission unique pieces. Come share in my success!

8. The value of my work continues to go up

As my reputation continues to grow, the value of my art rises and will continue to appreciate over time. This means that any piece you purchase is an heirloom for you to pass on to your children and grandchildren.

9. If you aren’t satisfied I will refund your purchase price

You have 7 days to change your mind. If you are not satisfied, I refund the whole price. Just return the painting in the condition it was purchased. How many artists and agents can you say that about?

10. Art has been scientifically proven to help you to live a longer and healthier life

In a scientific study, people were hooked up to a brain scanner and shown 30 different world-renowned art works. They found that when viewing a piece of art that they enjoyed, blood flow increased to the brain by 10 percent, (the same as seeing a loved one!). The study proved that owning a piece of art that you love does more than just make you feel good, it can cause increased blood flow to the brain which helps you to think more clearly and improve your overall health.

11. You experience beauty and magic

Surrounding yourself with beautiful things helps express your creative self, which is why so many artists are also art collectors. Owning a Sea Dean original allows you to step into a world of magic and inspiration.

12. Not just any reproduction

My prints and giclées are produced with the same care and quality as my originals. Whether canvas wrap, stretched canvas, or 100% cotton rag archival watercolor paper, everything is archival quality and intended to last a lifetime.

RED TREES Raw Edge Offset Mounted 8" x 10

 RED TREES

13. Documentation

Each original or giclée is hand signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity. Attach this to the back of your painting or frame so that it is easy to confirm the authenticity and value of the piece.

14. Ongoing service

Should your artwork be damaged in any way, perhaps by careless movers or fire, I am happy to provide a renewal service, so you can continue to enjoy the piece for a lifetime.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - TOULOUSE-LAUTREC

HENRI MARIE RAYMONDE DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC
Born 24 November 1864 at Albi, France

I've covered Toulouse Lautrec previously in my Famous Artist Birthday series; see the blog here. However, today I wanted to share my favourite pictures of the painter. He must have been a dynamic and interesting subject because there are many portraits of him. Some of my favourites are the ones in fancy dress costumes, which he could afford to lavish some money on.

Toulouse-Lautrec was from an aristocratic family and this afforded him many opportunities that contemporary artists just didn't have. However, his genetics are now thought to have contributed to his many health problems, most noticeably his short legs.

In spite of his disability, talent oozed from his fingertips. He had the knack of observation and simplification of line which show in the caricature above. Painting was too slow a process for him, but the speed and practicality of pastels were perfect when he wanted to add colour.

Here are more interesting portraits of Toulouse-Lautrec as others saw him. Any one of these would be great choices for a portrait.

I find it fascinating to look through my work and find the influence of the famous artist that I'm profiling. Here it is not necessarily a similarity in style, but this doll was dressed according to the era of "Belle Epoque" Paris. I think she makes a wonderful addition to a powder room or boudoir. She is painted in a larger than usual size and deep gallery wrap canvas, so I will quote on shipping to your post or zip code to help with your budget. Order now and you will receive the painting in time for the holidays.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE

AFTERNOON BIRCHES - Emile Gruppe

EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE

Emile was an American painter born 23 November 1896 in Rochester, New York. His whole family was involved in artistic pursuits. As a child, he lived in the Netherlands where his father Charles Paul Gruppe, was a dealer for Dutch painters in the US and was part of the Hague school. The family returned to the US permanently in 1913 to avoid The Great War.

Gruppe spent a year in the United States Navy in 1917 and on his return, he set up a permanent studio in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he became a member of the Cape Ann school of artists. Gruppe also studied at the National Academy in New York City and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris.

Although Gruppe is best known for his impressionistic landscapes, he also painted portraits. His style was largely inherited from Claude Monet. Gruppe's paintings are often seen in major auction galleries, such as Sotheby's, Christies, and Skinners and prices are some of the best reached by the Rockport School. He taught many well known artists including Otis Cook, Bill Wray and Nathalie Nordstrand.

The painting I chose above certainly echoes the sensitive treatment of trees by such Impressionists as Pissarro and Monet. His colours, though bold, are carefully softened by mixing in complimentary colours and the variation in his brushwork is superb.

I was introduced to Emile by Marion Hedger, a fabulous oil painter living in Provence. Thank you Marion.

LADY IN RED - Emile Gruppe
In searching for a painting with similar trees I rediscovered this lovely little vignette MINI MASTER from last year. This was painted in honour of Arthur Lismer. I have framed many of this series in wide frames and they look spectacular.

WHITE IS WHITE ... NOT - The Ocean Beckons

THE OCEAN BECKONS
8" x 10" in a beautiful white frame
On display in Lake Country Coffee Shop as part of the U100 Exhibition
(Contact me to purchase)

White is white, right? Wrong!

Anyone that has painted an interior white, knows all too well that there are hundreds of colours considered white by the paint and home decor industry. The annoying thing is that artists and interior decorators don't speak the same language, or at least it seems that way. If you would like to work with interior designers it's a good idea to learn their lingo.

Artist colours

Titanium White - A very cool, overpowering and opaque white. Pastels created with this white tend to be thick and heavy looking.

China White - Presumably made from white china clay which has a slightly stoney dull look but not as harsh as Titanium White.

Zinc White (Mixing White) - A soft, lightly coloured and translucent paint that creates more delicate pastels

Antique White - A warm opaque white tending towards beige.

Lead White - A thick metallic tinged opaque white used by early artists which is now banned.

Ivory White - A luscious creamy opaque white. A softer accent than Titanium White, but take care when mixing because it already contains yellow.

Designer Names for White

Almost all commercial interior paint contains Titanium White because of it's coverage and reflectivity. #FFFFFF is the closest html colour to Titanium White

I've been experimenting with various white mixtures for a while and I'm always surprised at how much colour they contain. Take a look at WHITE I below. All those stripes are different tube mixtures that are versions of white or unbleached base colours.

DELICIOUS COLOUR CODES

DELICIOUS by Sea Dean

Recently I found an interesting website which shows the colours found in an image without uploading the image. This is helpful if you are concerned about copyright or cyber theft. You can check it out here

You can happily click around your image to isolate a larger swatch of the colour you are trying to match. At the same time you can find the code for the colour which is helpful if you are a digital artist or printmaker, but if you know how to read the code it will also, to some extent, help you mix the colour. See below.

The same website has a section for colour names, helpful when speaking with a designer, a list of web-safe colours which are displayed the same on any screen and an html editor for the novice.

EVERY ACTION HAS AN EQUAL AND OPPOSITE REACTION

NEWTONS THIRD LAW OF MOTION
"For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction."

A force is a push or a pull that acts upon an object as a result of its interaction with another object.

According to Newton, whenever objects A and B interact with each other, they exert forces upon each other. When you sit in your chair, your body exerts a downward force on the chair and the chair exerts an upward force on your body. These are called action and reaction forces. The size of the force on the first object, equals the size of the force on the second object. The direction of the force on the first object, is opposite to the direction of the force on the second object.

Forces always come in pairs - equal and opposite action-reaction force pairs.

No, I haven't completely lost my mind. I heard this phrase in the course of my day and as so often happens I started thinking about it while I was painting. I use complimentary colours a lot in my work and it fascinates me that the balance of opposite colours is so crucial to the saleability of a painting.

Like Newtons law, colours come in pairs. My favourite combination is brilliant red/orange and turquoise. Another great pair is violet and lemon yellow. And another is deep blue and peach. Unlike Newtons law, the pairing doesn't require equal amounts of intensity or pigment, but the suggestion of the opposite colour must be there or the painting will seem bland or "off" in some way.

Let's say you have chosen warm skin tones in a portrait and you are now contemplating the background. I would go to my colour circle and find the predominant colour of the central focus, which in this case would be a warm peach or flesh colour. Looking across the colour circle I would discover a cool blue. I would then test swatches of blue until I reached the right intensity and tone. A light violet blue would give a fresh young look and a deep ultramarine would give more passion and intensity to the portrait. Either would be a complimentary choice depending on the mood you wish to convey.

Likewise with an landscape which is predominantly warm green, a few pops of crimson roofs or apples will add pizzazz but a suggestion of cool pink in the clouds will also suffice to create interest.

The painting above, YES I WILL YES, demonstrates the red/green complement. Although in this painting the amounts are roughly equal, that doesn't have to be the case. It is also important to take into account the intensity and impact of each colour. In this painting the cadmium red has photographed with more intensity than is present in the actual painting; bright red holds far more weight than pale green for instance. Some paintings may call for a more subdued look, however, in this case I chose the bright red to emphasize the thoughts and emotions of the girl as she prepared for her date.

Where else can you apply Newtons law to your art or to your every day life?

Does this give some insight into that contrary friend that always seems to contradict what you say?

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - EUGENE VON GUERARD

JOHANN JOSEPH EUGENE VON GUERARD
(17 November 1811 – 17 April 1901)

Von Guerard was born in Austria in 1811. He was nearly 40 in 1849 when he attended the Düsseldorf Academy. During his years with the Academy he was influenced by the German Romantic tradition and in particular, Caspar David Friedrich. Similar to the Nazarene movement, German Romanticism  attempted to link God with man using nature.

Von Guerards personal artistic style owes much to the Romantic style of Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin and Salvator Rosa. He traveled widely and painted landscapes wherever he went. From 1852 to 1882 he lived in Australia and became one of the first artists to record the Australian landscape. In Australia, he is usually referred to as Eugene von Guerard without the accent on his last name.

Personally I love the Australian landscape which is like no other place on earth. The colours are stunning, the light inspiring and the landscapes, challenging. When I lived in Australia I had little time to paint the beauty of this extraordinary county, therefore, I'm glad that artists like Guerard did such a wonderful job and art collectors have purchased and preserved their work for posterity.

The little sketch below was my last home in Australia. The old stone house was built by Irish immigrants in 1851 and was one of the first in the area. Once the verandah had a beautiful view of the ocean, but had long since been subdivided for housing which now blocks the view. In this sketch I painted it as it would have looked when first built.

I've lived in brick, concrete and wood homes, but this was my first experience of a stone house and I was amazed at how pleasant it was to live in. Cool in summer, warm in winter and this home in particular exuded a sense of history and continuity. There was areal sense that the homestead was connected to both the land and the people that lived there.

I enjoy this technique of ink and colour wash and I plan to create such a series of drawings of the historic buildings around where I live before they disappear. Hopefully I will find the time next summer. If you live in a home that has a sense of history I would love to paint it for you. They make a great heirloom for the family.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - GEORGIA O'KEEFE

GEORGIA O' KEEFE

Georgia Totto O'Keeffe (November 15, 1887 – March 6, 1986) was an American artist. She is best known for her paintings of enlarged flowers, New York skyscrapers, and New Mexico landscapes. O'Keeffe has been recognized as the "Mother of American modernism

When I first started painting full time I wanted to be a landscape painter. I had no desire to paint flowers and didn't even think I could. But then I was asked to show my work at a garden tour and the requirement was that I had to show some floral paintings. So I taught myself how to observe and paint flowers.

The first flower I painted was GAIA ENERGY, above, which is still one of my favourite paintings and surprisingly has not yet sold.

I then created a series of floral miniature masterpieces on 6" x 6" Gallery Wrap Canvases. A year later I was painting teeny tiny ACEO florals. And the next year I painted some large Calla Lilies. All this I did without studying Georgia O'Keefe's florals.

As O'Keefe was an American artist I had never studied her in Art History class, and although I knew her name, I had seen very few of her paintings in my lifetime. In fact I was more influenced by a good friend of mine, Cyndee Banister, who paints magnificent giant flowers picked from her garden.

As an outsider, I would say that the most iconic of Georgias works would be one of her skull paintings, purely because they speak of her sense of place, but I believe that most people think of flowers when they think of Georgia O'Keefe.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - MONET PAINTING and MONET PAINTINGS by Sea Dean

"And what, sir, is the subject matter of that painting?" (Critic)
"The subject matter, my dear good fellow, is the light." (Claude Monet)

When I first found the blog I'm going to introduce you to I was awestruck. I'm so pleased the link is still available on the great man's birthday. Click and enjoy.

I often do demos following Claude Monet's work for my "Paint a Masterpiece" classes, so I have several paintings currently available.
