#30in30 - Day 30 - Fresh Bouquet
I’m a bit late posting this because I dropped my iPad and the screen shattered to smitherines, even though it was in a protective case and had a clear cover. $300 later and I’m catching up on the blog.
This is quite a large textured painting about 12” x 16” I think but it’s European sizing so not exact. I think I will still go back and simplify, plus adding some bold strokes of pure whit and lime green. The challenge is done though! Yay! In my next blog I will assemble a collage. Thanks for following me.
About 60 new paintings are posted on the blog each day. Some artists are painting daily and others have few spare hours so post when they can. There is a core group that manage to create a new piece each day and they should be applauded. Visit the challenge blog and see the amazing variety produced.

#30in30 - Day 29 - Making Dollar Store Buys Your Own
I attended a demo by a popular artist in the area who talked about texture. At one point she said that she only puts texture on the centre of interest. In this case I chose three central roses, an off center bud and a few leaves. After texturizing I started to paint the smooth areas with dynamic brush strokes and two tone paint on the brush. Next I filled the white surround with crackle medium.

#30in30 - Fouth Week Done - Lots of Tex
Only a couple more days in the challenge. I’ve found this time around very useful as I’ve been forced to use texture and I’ve stuck with it. I’ve particularly learned a lot about crackle effect and how to integrate different types of decoration and texture. I hope you’ve enjoyed my experiments.

#30in30 - Day 28 - Distressed Barometer
When I remarried the barometer part to the mount, the bezel seemed too shiny, so I coated it with the same beautiful blue. At some point I will change the shield shape of the mount to something more modern, but for now I can enjoy the distressed painted surface I’ve created on the sheild shape. That’s the beauty of acrylic based paint, it can always be worked again.
At the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days Challenge, about 80 new paintings are posted on the blog each day. It is a major commitment of time and effort, but Leslie has made the criteria as flexible as possible. Some artists paint daily and others have limited time, so post when they can. #30in30 - Day 25 - MINI TEX IX
This is MINI TEX IX which has a base of Amsterdam Light Naples, then modeling paste followed by several layers of acrylic in Titanium White, Light Blue Violet, Bindex Dyna, Light Portrait Pink and Cadmium Orange, none of which sang to me.
OK I thought, they say the crackle medium should be thick, let’s take that for a run! I glooped on some Kroma Crackle, that has a strong odour, so I don’t mind using it up. While wet I sprayed the whole thing with Rust-oleum “Chalked” in Country Grey (I couldn’t resist buying spray on chalk paint when I saw it). I dropped the whole wet gloopy thing in my waste bin and put it out on the balcony to dry. A few days later when I went looking for my waste bin, I discovered this. I like the effect, but I’m not convinced of saleability. So, it’s a painting-in-waiting while the crackle dries.

#30in30 - Day 23 - MINI TEX VII
I’ve been experimenting with crackle for the 30 day challenge.
This is MINI TEX VII has a base of Plaid Folk Art Home Decor Chalk (ultra matte acrylic paint) in Sheepskin. On top of that is Kroma Crackle, which is from a specialist artist’ shop And purports to be for fine art applications. I hadn’t achieved the effect I wanted with this product before, so decided to blob on the gloopy stuff very thickly, about 1/8”.
It has been a couple of days and it’s still drying and tacky to the touch, but I’m finally achieving a larger cracked effect. It’s hard to stop myself putting a layer of paint on top, but I want it to dry rock hard and develop fully first. As the crackle dries it gets whiter, so it’s not to difficult to see how it is progressing.

#30in30 - Day 22 - MINI TEX VI
I’ve been experimenting with crackle for the 30 day challenge. MINI TEX VI has a base of Plaid Folk Art Home Decor Chalk (ultra matte acrylic paint) in Grotto, which is a lovely soft emerald Green color. On top of that is Plaid Folk Art Home Decor Crackle. Then Chalk in White Adirondack brushed on in one stroke, one direction quite thickly.
I was going to coat the whole cradle till I saw the lovely broken line on the left and decided to stop there. I will be adding something when completely dry in a few days, but I think this is beautiful in is own right. I see people, do you?

#30in30 - Third Week - Spirit of the Falls
I’ve been pretty busy this week getting ready for winter. I took down my solo exhibition on Saturday, Then immediately two calls for submission came in which I had to deal with. My car is still full of paintings to deliver, then I can organise my studio for the holiday rush.
In the meantime I’ve cleaned my air coolers and air conditioners, got out the winter bedding, made an appointment to change summer to winter tires and changed over my clothes to fall/winter. I like to get a bit ahead this time of year because there’s no telling when the holiday rush will start in ernest. And a heads up on that ... I will not be shipping most of the month of October, so October orders will ship at the beginning of November. Anything ordered now will ship immediately.
Of course I’ve still been chugging away with the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. my blog isn’t always in step with the postings on Leslie’s blog, so check a few days back or follow my blog and all will be revealed in time.

#30in30 - Day 19 - Spirit of the Falls
This painting is taking its time but I’m still following my challenge topic of texture. The last couple of days I have shown a metal leaf section and an applied dried “skin” acrylic section. Today I added metal leaf over the chunky skins and more dark areas.
Part of the challenge with this painting is integrating two distinct areas, one of which has floating First Nation imagery and the other water and mist. I was thrilled to find some puffy colorful orb stickers to add. Perhaps some painted bubbles in the watery part will also help. There is more crackle under the paint which I hope will develop and yet to come, metal mesh and carefully choreographed sections of gloss and matt brushwork.
Although there are hundreds of artists registered in the 30 day challenge, only about 100 paintings are posted on the blog each day. Some artists are painting each day but not completing a daily painting, which is what I’m doing here. There is a core group that manage to create a new piece each day and they should be applauded. #30in30 - Day 17 and Day 18 - Spirit of the Falls
The larger chunks on the bottom are dried gloss gel broken up and applied with more gloss gel. I can’t remember which gloss gel this was, but possibly Liquitex and it has a slightly yellowed look which I’m not keen on. Below is another section I’m working on with more iridescent and interference acrylics; I love them, but sooooo difficult to photograph. This painting is not co-operating and is time consuming, so I will publish different sections each day on the 30in30 blog.

#30in30 - MINI TEX V - Day 16
There is a cling wrap texture method that you’ve probably seen on my Pinterest board “Sea Dean - Free Lessons Tips and Tricks”: It entails using cling wrap over paint, letting the paint dry to tacky stage and then carefully peeling the wrap away to reveal patterns.
The method above is different, as it leaves plastic film attached as part of the art. With this method you have to make triply sure that the plastic film has stuck before you continue adding to the work. With acrylics being a type of plastic, I thought it would be easy to get the two mates to stick together, but I had to use a thick layer of heavy duty clear gel, then continue to push the plastic into it as it dried. I later added more gel and jumbo glitter to create a deep ocean effect. Sorry, with bright light, shiny plastic and glitter involved, a better image is unlikely. In real life it looks like a designer evening dress.

#30in30 - My Valentine - Day 15
My Valentine needed a tweak and one of my most popular paintings on Pinterest is an ACEO I sold back in 2013, so I decided to use similar colors and brushstrokes to give it a fresh look. I also added some crackle which will develop a bit more in time. Gold is back, so I added some pale gold/platinum for sparkle and I think it turned out well.

#30in30 - Week Two - Everything is coming up roses
Another week of the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. My goal is to use all of the textural supplies I have on hand, and maybe sneak in a few new ones :) These paintings are purely experimental, trying out textures and backgrounds. Sometimes experiments are better than resulting finished works, but they often continue to evolve so grab them fast.
MINI TEX ROSE III 3“ x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 8 #11
The rose is very abstract under it’s coating of beige and white sand. The bright citrus makes this artwork special and gives it a modern flavour.
MINI TEX ROSE IV 3”x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 9 #13
This is also modeling paste, but with a grey background and a single diamanté in the centre. It’s striking and I may create a larger piece along these lines.
MINI TEX ROSE I 3” x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 10 #10
I always admired master plaster work in stately homes in Europe and later learned how to make flowers for wedding cakes from thick icing sugar. This seems like a natural progression. I’ve wanted to play with modeling paste for a while now and thoroughly enjoyed it: I love that it stays crisp and doesn’t lose shape as it dries.
MINI TEX ROSE II 6” x 6” Mixed Media $55 - Day 11 #13
I love the format of this one. The birch panel is slightly off straight so it needs framing, but that would only enhance it.
MINI TEX II 3” x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 12 #23
I started this by applying Golden Quinacridone Magenta then a thick layer of crackle using a palette knife and when dry, a coat of Sheepskin Plaid Chalk paint on top. Crackle needs to dry for several days before sealing and keeps changing till completely dry.
MINI TEX III 3” x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 13 #4
I started this by applying Golden Turquoise, a lovely rich pigmented paint. Then I applied crackle, dried, a layer of Sheepskin Chalk paint and then dried again for 3 days. I wasn’t thrilled with the result as I prefer larger cracks. Then I remembered a tip to paint thickly in one direction, so I will give that a try with the next one. In this case I painted a little beach scene with Matt paint.
MINI TEX IV 3” x 4” Mixed Media $35 - Day 14 #8
As I predicted I added to the magenta painting. I coated the crackle with gloss soft gel and then added extra dollops and dropped in paint before it was dry. Next I painted impressionist brushwork in various irridescent and interference paints taking care not to coat the magenta under paint. I love the resulting little floral. Another one I may try to reproduce in large size, certainly the colors and flowers.
Although there are hundreds of artists registered, only about 150 new paintings are posted on the blog each day. Last Days On Exhibition - Different Strokes 2018 - Review
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my solo exhibition this year. For the first time I brought larger paintings and a wood sculpture, I did demos on site and took part in the buzz of the big Art Walk exhibition from a distance. If I have the opportunity, I will certainly do it again. I would also enjoy the next block leading into fall, or the one after. I’m thinking that snow capped mountains, large and small may be a good theme.
Back to my current exhibition and I’m sad to say it’s coming to a close. I will be at the Gallery Saturday morning taking down to make room for the next Artist. If you’re in the area and love one of the paintings, the time to buy is now before they are whisked off to other galleries. If you’re a distant fan, I can ship on Monday, to get ahead of the holiday rush.
I also do lay-aways, so you can place a deposit now and pay over time, which works well for larger pieces. If you’re in the area I will deliver anything over $1,000 personally and help you hang it.
If this exhibition has shown me anything, it’s that I’m on the right track with texture, simplification and abstract sculpture. I loved my piece, Cascade Kintsugi, which sold so fast I didn’t get a professional image.
I want to thank everyone who attended and especially all those who purchased even a $3 art postcard. it all goes to help me grow as an artist, allowing me to purchase more interesting supplies and cover the ever increasing expenses.
There are still a couple of days to rush in and see my work in person. Believe me, It’s nothing like seeing it online. The large pieces gain a sense of grandure and the smaller pieces gain a condensed intensity that is hard to imagine.

This year there were many large works including Oil, Acrylic, Mixed Media, Digital and 3D pieces. For the first time I felt connected to my solo exhibition because I continued to add and tweak leading up to Art Walk weekend. The public appearance also worked well, but next year I will work harder on promotion and signage, to bring people in from the road.

“Signs point to higher elevation snow on Thursday”
WHITE MOUNTAIN - Sold! |
At one point I was discussing the holiday season with an owner and we both agreed the buying season and in fact winter, will come early this year. Then I read the long weather forecast this morning and saw the above headline. As soon as snow appears on the tips of our mountains, seasonal buying starts in ernest, so if you don’t have your best work in galleries in the next week or so, you may miss the boat. Last year almost all buying took place in October/November and there was no crazy rush in December. Get your skates on!
It started slowly with the odd yellow leaf which I thought may be pollution stress from the smoke, but now there are large chunks of yellow in my view. Even on my distant mountain vignette I see a distinct change in color. The weather has been beautiful the last couple of days, but I’m booking my winter tire changeover for the last week of September.

On Exhibition Okanagan - Warm Jasperware and UG2BK
In a very dark corridor beside the washrooms I hung a couple of bright abstracts for fun. “UG2BK” is one of my favorites and “Warm Jasperware” complements it nicely. This year I have many large works including Oil, Acrylic, Mixed Media, Digital and 3D pieces.

On Exhibition Okanagan - Rockwell Cat
I’ve been going at break neck speed to get ready for this exhibition. Almost every piece is new, and this year I have many large works including Oil, Acrylic, Mixed Media, Digital and 3D pieces. My solo exhibition wouldn’t be complete without a pet portrait. I revamped the background and added a dish to my “Rockwell Cat” painting. So sweet.
Owner Sharon graciously allowed me to set up on the outdoor patio for the weekend. I was surprised to discover that it remained shaded from the sun all day. AND with blue skies, no smoke and no wind, it turned out to be a perfect location. I met many interesting people and doggies, and managed to add a few more paintings to the exhibition, sell some art cards and paint a demo. All in all it was the nicest weekend this summer. Silly me, I forgot to take a picture of my set up.

On Exhibition Art Walk - Purple Hills ACEO
Purple Hills is an ACEO collector miniature, framed and matted in soft white. This bright little original painting would make a perfect gift for the upcoming holiday season.

Sea will be on site during Art Walk 8 and 9 September
I’ve ben going at break neck speed to get ready for this exhibition. Almost every piece is new, and this year I have many large works including Oil, Acrylic, Mixed Media, Digital and 3D pieces. I will be available all weekend during Art Walk, so that you can ask about the inspiration for your favorite pieces. And if the weather co-operates I may even be giving some demos. Drop in and meet the artist.
