This gallery size painting was inspired by a photo supplied by Liz and Dave Vowels. The Vowels recently returned from viewing tigers in the wild. They were hoping they would catch a glimpse of the illusive beast and they were rewarded by this rare sight of a tiger sauntering out of the jungle within feet of where they were.
Not surprisingly, the original photo is a bit indistinct from distance and excitement, but what caught my attention was the beautiful camouflage of the Tiger's fur which blends so perfectly with the background grasses and trees. It was challenging to create enough definition to make the tiger the focal point, but still convey the diffusion of his markings. I'm very happy with the result.
PROGRESS IMAGES
1. Finished painting with sunbeams, softer undergrowth and specks of interference light gold on the tiger. This image is more colourful because it was taken in morning north light. The others were taken in poor light at night.
