This marks the closing of my solo exhibition at Lake Country Coffee House. It was a wonderful experience. The staff couldn't be more helpful and it went off with hardly a glitch. Three of my paintings found new homes, one person is thinking about a commissioned pet portrait, several people inquired about classes and I made some new friends. I asked to go at the end of the list again so I'll be having another one there in a couple of years time.

This was one of the paintings that was on exhibition. I love this painting. It's a stunning piece for any dull corner but perfect for a powder room. I'm getting back into flowers again, perhaps because of the beautiful growing weather we've been having. My latest flowers are part of my 100 drawing project. More on my blog soon.

A preliminary painting for a larger work. I said I was going to wait for the next Leslie Saeta challenge to get back into oil painting, but I have been asked to paint over a large oil painting with an ocean scene and that means painting in oil. I'm never afraid to take up a challenge, but I do like to be prepared hence a few scenes to use as examples before I tackle the larger piece.

I've used traditional oils which dry faster than water soluble ones. I was concerned about drying time, so Cyber friend and oil painter, Marion Hedger, instructed me to use Winsor and Newton Liquin or Impasto Liquin, mixed into the paint. Marion advised me to thinly coat Liquin over the seasoned painting first, to give more slip and better adherence.

I was unable to obtain either Liquin product, so I'm trialing a similar product by Grumbacher called Japan Dryer. As this is a small painting, I lightly coated the primed panel with Japan as a base and it seemed to work well. Japan has a fairly strong odor and their are warnings on the label, so I'm keeping the painting separate from the rest of the home until it abates.

I've been told that a hair dryer on low speeds the process but Japan is heat sensitive and can yellow, so I'm steering clear of that. There is another product I would like to try called, Krylon Quick Dry, which you can spray between layers and as a final coat. I will trial this later.

For a theme I've chosen abstract expressionist/impressionist explorations. I've painted many abstracts, but I need to develop a consistent style. When I visit a gallery it is always the abstracts that catch my attention, particularly if they have an interesting palette, so now I'm working on my own series.

"Pastel Lines I", is a soft and delicate abstract modeled on a watery sunset. The paint is impasto, deep texture and finished to a high shine with Gamvar, museum quality varnish. The painting works well any way up, but I like the top one best.

In the same series as "WARM JASPERWARE I" from a couple of days ago. Same method with cool palette. As I venture into this series I have more and yet more ideas. I wonder if this is the beginning of a solo exhibition???

I had three solos last year which were a huge amount of work, but it was so good to see a large group of my paintings in one place. In September last year I had over 200 paintings scattered around my area in various galleries, shows and solos. Phew!

I need to paint a few designs with hearts for my Valentines cards, so I thought I'd get ahead of things. If you want to get ahead too for your sweetheart, mother or daughter this original painting is for sale at Daily Paintworks. It also looks great in portrait format as shown.

HEART AND ROSES is absolutely dripping with colour and detail. Continuing with my theme of testing textures and styles I've gone overboard in this painting. There is fluorescent pink, iridescent bronze, textured molding paste, soft gel, ink and acrylic paint.

All that texture make it challenging to photograph, because it has such a chameleon nature. I chose an image with light shining on it to show the shimmer. The colours are magenta, gold and fluro pink with hints of titanium white.

I've always had a soft spot for this painting because it brings back happy memoires of skiing when I lived on a ski hill. The thick impasto doesn't photograph well, but is just like a rutty run at the end of the day.

BUSY BUSY

I haven't shown you many new paintings lately because I'm busy with other areas of my art business.

I have two paintings in the Rouge exhibition starting on November 4th. It's at the French Cultural Center on Bernard Avenue, Kelowna. The opening is November 12th.

I'm also busy preparing 20 small works and 3 larger ones for the Under 100 Exhibtion at Lake Country Art Gallery. The U 100 is a yearly event and spectacularly busy. It opens in mid November. Opening night painting fly out the door and it brings in a nice shot of income for local artists.

On Saturday I am teaching my first class in Kelowna, which I'm very excited about. We are painting one of my favourite works by Claude Monet "Regatta at Argenteuil".

Once I get that finished, I'm chomping at the bit to finish three paintings started in the wonderful class I took with Fiona Neal. They are larger than my normal size 24" x 24" on deep gallery wrap canvas, and rather experimental in nature.

I've also been busy reorganizing again, which seems to be an ongoing task as I continue to downsize and re-purpose space. My new studio is proving much more convenient than the last: I can hang many part finished works in the gallery area, have one on a standing easel and several on my painting table without constantly moving them around. I can move from one painting to another as fancy takes me and when I'm waiting for sections to dry. Great fun.

SAGE REAL ESTATE EXHIBITION in Downtown Kelowna

Yesterday I hung my solo at Sage Realty. I have seven paintings in the lobby and main street window. Pictured are SUMMER BREEZE, ABOVE THE LAKE and LUMINOUS BREAKER. 

Then on to the ROTARY CENTER OF THE ARTS for the kick of to Culture Week and the beginning of the Culture Crawl. For 3 hours we crawled downtown Kelowna and after all that walking on pavement I really was crawling by the end of the night. We went to the Alternator Gallery at RCA, Kelowna Gallery, Hambleton Gallery, The Military Museum, The HeART School, Lululemon, Hemp World (Glass blowing), The Bean Scene. Of course I also lead the group past my solo at Sage and all were duly impressed. It was a lovely evening of eye opening art, ear opening music and historical treats.


 A NIGHT OF A THOUSAND LIGHTS REVIEW
 
I finished the night with an appearance at "A Night of One Thousand Lights" at the new Artizan House. I was happy to see that all five of my submissions were hanging next to some wonderful paintings from artists I admire that complimented mine beautifully. 

The event is a fund raiser for Artizan House and there were all kinds of tasty treats and even a custom made house tea and lots of wine. Various excellent musicians played all evening and there were plenty of places to sit or wander and enjoy the ambiance. 

The event is also open Sunday evening so don't miss it if you are nearby. The whole event is available for a suggested donation of $5 or more and thoroughly worth it.

Another in the collage series. The texture is a bit more distinct but matches CRAZY SHOES from a couple of days ago. This is the most accurate colour I could achieve with my equipment, but the actual painting has more life and depth. Hope you like it.

THIS IS IT - FINALLY THE BIG DAY IS HERE

Art Walk is the largest exhibition of art for over 200 miles in either direction. Art lovers come from across Canada to view the work of our local artists who descend on Lake Country from a 50 mile radius. It's exciting. There is a buzz in the air. The entire central area of the town is taken over by Artists and Art lovers chattering about what they've seen.

It's not just a matter of slapping down your $100 for a booth, each 10' x 10' space is won by making your way through a challenging jury system. Every year more and more artists vie for those precious spaces, the bar rises and the quality of the Art on display rivals any in North America.

The work doesn't stop at being chosen. There is grid wall to assemble, an eye catching display to create to stand out from the crowd, and the ever present hanging committee are there to remove any work which doesn't come up to snuff.

As you know I'm a daily painter, so most of my catalogue is under 8" x 10". I love to paint large, but that isn't my market, or hasn't been up till now. Today I am exhibiting at least seven larger paintings and CRIMSON CIRCLE is one of the largest and my favourite piece. Actually I love it.

So if you're anywhere near the Okanagan, come over to Art Walk to enjoy all the activities and beautiful art and stop by my booth to say hi.Commemorative postcards available at my Art Bazaar tent. The moment I saw this beautiful photo by my internet friend Bob Jones, I knew I had to paint it. Trouble is when? My busy life means I was painting this at 3am this morning. 

I'm in luck, yesterday, I finally found my halogen painting light which had disappeared during the move and how happy I am. This means I can paint at night with ease because the light I was using before, a strong daylight, was making the colours too intense and throwing off my values. Ahhhh!

This is quite an unusual colour scheme for me, but in the spirit of the 30 day challenge I'm KISSing my paintings. Nothing sloppy here, it means KEEP IS SIMPLE SEA so I chose a limited palette using "pushed" versions of the colour in the photograph. The edge of the boat is a more intense bright red but I couldn't get it to photograph well. The main colours are Cerulean, Sap Green, Dioxazine Purple, Raw Sienna, Naphthol and Cadmium Red.

As you see, I made the angle of the boat slightly more upright and cropped it for compositional purposes.

This was a difficult challenge because there were many angles that had to be just right, the front of the foot, the placement of the heel, the height of the anklet etc. I easily chose turquoise/teal for the leather and rose pink for the flowers, but when it came to creating a background it took a while to decide on something simple, interesting enough to grab attention, yet not too busy to distract from the main focus. I settled for a multi layered organdy drape which is much prettier in real life.

My style continues to develop, and I find myself often drawn to mixing smooth with impasto. I also love mixed media and will continue to work with galleries in understanding that this is valid form of fine art, not just a simple craft. For this painting I chose a 3 dimensional style of flower created with soft gel with the shoe smooth and unobtrusive. The final touch is the applied silk flower which really adds pop. I like the effect. I would describe the colour of the flower as true rose pink. It is a warm medium shade. Some monitors might make it appear brighter as with any reddish tones.

To create this painting I studied numerous artists methods for creating life-like impressionist peonies, including the Master Edouard Manet, my mentor, Julie Ford Oliver, and other Daily Painting peers. 

I prefer painting burgundy peonies like the one at the back in this painting and I don't have any difficulty painting them, but pale pink ones are always a challenge. As you see from my progress photos, this painting went through many changes with many pauses. I like all of them for different reasons.

The final painting shows the style I've been developing over several years, revealing the aura or energy patterns swirling around the flowers. You will also notice the composition and the vessel the flowers sit in. 

In the first version it was a centered composition which lacked energy. The flowers seemed over large for the vessel and I hadn't got the bulbous nature of the peony and the center right. I liked this version but I could see more possibility.

In the second version I enlarged the vessel, added more colour and decentralized the composition. I like this, but didn't like the handle of the jug which seemed to cut through the painting and the bright table was drawing the eye away from the focal point. The peony has a good 3D effect, but in real life the Cadmium Yellow was too dominant.

In the final version I moved more towards Manet's bold contrasts which he in turn discovered in the paintings of Titian. I added more energy with the aura lines and bolder strokes. I added more texture in the flower to make it stand apart from the rest of the painting, and a changed the vessel size and colour. I paid particular attention to the way the flower was sitting in the vase, the shadows the leaves created on the neck and the height of the bloom above the neck. I'm very proud of the aspect. 

All these changes moved the painting to the next step, away from traditional and towards a more contemporary look. The colour scheme is also more modern with it's emphasis on Payne's Grey and Titanium White.

Sea Dean “I have wanted to paint with my mother for many years. She was the first person to inspire me to draw, sitting together at the dining room table. She has always encouraged my work and likes to make suggestions, so it was natural to ask her to collaborate on the intergenerational show.

We started with a blank canvas, I asked Charlotte to suggest subject and colour scheme. As I painted, I asked for feedback. Some things Charlotte suggested were very challenging, because I would normally make different choices.

This was our first collaborative effort and it took a while to learn to work together productively. I decided to take a back seat and Charlotte became the project manager with my hands putting her thoughts into action. This painting went through many versions until we both agreed it was finished.

This is quite a special painting because it was the first time I painted with colours straight from the tube, which is now part of my signature style. I wanted to create a dynamic impasto work which reflected the beautiful scenes found a few hundred miles inland from the west coast. 

The first time I saw mountains, foothills, pine trees and deep blue water all in one place I was struck dumb, and even today I find it almost too much to believe places like this exist.

Vincent Van Gogh stood out amongst his contemporaries because of his expressive brushwork and it is this technique which intimidated me so, that I almost didn't celebrate his birthday. This is not because it is difficult to copy his work in oil and in the original size, but converting it to miniature and painting in acrylic, now that IS difficult. Acrylics resist impasto style work and tend to flatten when drying, even with skillful use of gels, while oils do the opposite, resisting mingling and flattening.

Always one to take on a challenge, here is my MINI MASTER version of detail from "Wheatfield with Cypresses" from July 1889


VINCENT WILLEM VAN GOGH

30 March 1853 Born at Groot-Sundert, north Brabant
He was the son of a clergyman. Three of his brothers were Art dealers and both he and his brother Theo followed suit.
1869 Vincent was an Art dealer for Goupil & Co at The Hague
1873 Transferred to London branch
1875 Transferred to Paris branch
1876 Was dismissed and tried several things including preaching.
1880 He turned to painting and his more successful brother Theo gave him an allowance
1886 He changed his colour palette when he visited Paris and saw Impressionist, Neo-Impressionist and Japanese prints
1888 Painted in Arles
1889 Argued with Gaugin and entered asylum at St Remy and Auvers
1890, in July, he died by his own hand at Auvers
