DRAW THE LINE - DAY 24 - 30 in 30

This time a twilight shot. I’m always torn between keeping images natural, by gently erasing such things as cell towers, power lines and jet trails, or allowing them to intrude on the scene. After all they are part of our modern world and they could become a trendy part of the composition if allowed to be part of the scene rather than an intrusion.

What do you think?

BLUE HORIZON

BLUE HORIZON by Sea Dean
BLUE HORIZON
8" x 10" Canvas Panel

I completed this painting some time ago and it became a Daily Paintworks Pick of the Day. I created and sold many art cards of it, but the sky always bothered me. When I cleared out my studio at the end of last year it went onto my "rework" pile.

Today I added some blush to the sky and the water as a reflection. Then the beach needed tweaking and I gave it a pink Bermuda sand look. As usual, I pretty much redid the whole painting. :) I think it has more action and vibrancy now. I hope you like it.

I'm taking part in the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. DAY 12

For a theme I've chosen abstract expressionist/impressionist explorations. I've painted many abstracts, but I need to develop a consistent style. When I visit a gallery it is always the abstracts that catch my attention, particularly if they have an interesting palette, so now I'm working on my own series.

"Pastel Lines I", is a soft and delicate abstract modeled on a watery sunset. The paint is impasto, deep texture and finished to a high shine with Gamvar, museum quality varnish. The painting works well any way up, but I like the top one best.

I will ship this abstract series anywhere in the UK and North America, inclusive. Your purchase will arrive ready to mount, mat or frame as you choose. Should you prefer, I can ship ready to hang, please contact me for a quote.

SUNSET OVER THE LAKE - Using Atelier Interactive Acrylic in a hot climate

SUNSET OVER THE LAKE by Sea Dean
As promised here is the second installment of testing Atelier Interactive Acrylics in a hot climate.

My studio is so hot that unless I paint in the morning, ordinary acrylic paint dries as soon as it comes out of the tube. I needed an alternative, hence the testing of Atelier Interactive. Interactive also dries fast, but it has the added benefit that you can reactivate it up to several days afterwards with a light mist and rework it.

SUNSET LAKE by Sea Dean
With the second painting, SUNSET LAKE, I went back and adjusted a few things after 24 hours. I found that you could lift out areas with a damp brush like working with water colour. You could also go over passages that had dried with too hard a line, and soften it. I easily changed the line of the mountains against the sky because it hadn't created a hard ridge like normal acrylics. It accepted the change readily and covered in only a couple of coats rather than scraping with a blade and applying multiple coats to the area. On analysis I may go back and lighten the distant mountains, because it looks much nicer on the canvas painting.

As you can see, the Canson Arches I used for the second painting, seems to intensify the colour. It is also very absorbent and when you go in with a damp brush to touch up, it creates a strange spongey wicking effect where it temporarily changes the colour of the paint all around the spot. This does go away quickly but it is quite scary.

I also reactivated my dried out palette from the previous session by spraying lightly with water and allowing it to sit for a minute. I found too much weakens the paint, so it's best to mist several times to get into the thicker areas. Being frugal, I was impressed at this aspect of the paint because with ordinary acrylics they just get thrown away or for frugal me, used for texture in abstracts.

Just like ordinary acrylics, Atelier Interactive does dry a different colour, lights lighten, darks darken, intense brights intensify and dull colours go muddy. That didn't bother me, because as an acrylic painter I'm used to it.

Comparing the two paintings, I found it easier to paint on canvas than Arches, perhaps because the ambient temperature was over 90 degrees. I do find that Atelier Interactive seem to have a softer look than ordinary acrylics which can take some getting used to. It's more challenging to achieve very dark and very light areas. I think this is just a matter of changing technique slightly. All in all I like the result of the SUNSET OVER THE LAKE more than that of SUNSET LAKE, but I do like the extra texture in the latter.

FREE LESSON - CATALOGING

Yikes! The work can sure build up when you have other tasks at hand like taking a short holiday, cleaning house, moving, setting up a new studio and signing up for the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge. As a result I was waaaaaay behind with cataloging. Today I finally spread out the work due and to my horror I counted 22 paintings!

Cataloging is a crucial part of any professional Artists life. Firstly, it involves checking that all relevant information appears on the back of each painting. Each Artist does this a bit differently, but I put 7 things - name of painting (and series if there is one), name of artist (me), medium,  signature, year of creation, my contact details and the all important catalog number. I write this all by hand because I believe it is part of the personal creation.

Cataloging also involves checking all websites, online galleries, Facebook etc. to ensure that wherever the painting appears the same information is given, plus the all important size in inches and cm. Sometimes when posting work on the internet things go awry with cut and paste; in my 22 paintings I found 2 that in my rush to post I had misnamed in my online gallery. I've found that another common mistake I see in online shops is the wrong size being entered, largely I'm sure due to duplicating parts of the information and not checking closely enough.

A third part of cataloging is creating a Certificate of Authenticity, which is something I do during the mailing process. I will cover this in another blog.

Progression of painting

The final painting of the series that explores the effect of under-painting Cadmium Red Light on the final work. I am particularly interested in the atmosphere created and the difficulty of photographing for the internet. Here the base is Liquitex Cadmium Red Light.

STEP 2 - Under Painting
STEP 3 - Base Sky Paint
STEP 4 - Other Layer Sk
STEP 4 - Other Sky Paint - 4 Versions
STEP 5 - Base Layer Ocean
ALL 4 - 1 Sienna, 2 Cad Red Lt, 3 Magenta, 4 Violet

View my three previous blogs and consider these questions -

1. What atmosphere is invoked by each colour of under-paint?
2. Which is my favourite?
3. Which is my least favourite?
4. What is my order of preference?

I would love to see your choices and thoughts in comments.

Another one of Artist Evhe´s still life challenges. I love to paint abstract Roses, but today I wanted to do something more realistic. There are a few touches of bronze iridescence to highlight the petals. I really enjoyed doing this and look forward to more of Evhe´s challenges every two weeks.
