Today's task for Leslie Saeta's Art marketing class is to create a new painting and take progress photos at intervals. This month I've been painting PEOPLE'S CHOICE for my online DPW Gallery but today I felt like cutting loose and doing a natural abstract. I find it quite fascinating to watch a painting change, especially an abstract.Here are 7 progress photos showing the birth of "Sunset" 

I've painted from this particular photo session before because I love the colour combinations. It was a from flight over Georgia Strait a couple of years ago. There  is something very magical about aerial photos; because we are partly above the atmosphere the colours are even more spectacular than at sea level.

This time I chose to paint "Alla Prima" which, means a wet on wet or "Bob Ross" type painting done in one sitting with no drying period in between. Because Acrylics dry so quickly they allow you to layer very soon after you have painted a section which gives a crisper, brighter look, different to Oil painting.

I could have stopped at any stage, because I like them all, but after rotating the painting and adding iridescent highlights, I knew this was it. I will try and capture the shimmering highlights in a photo tomorrow. I LOVE the result!


Image # 1 - Blocking in layer. I think this is wonderful and if I was Henri Matisse I may have put it on the side as a record and started again. I pressed on.

Image # 2 - Continuing to block in. Here I am testing which colours make the painting pop, with one eye on the original inspiration photo. I am always aware that upper layers including washes, will change the intensity and colour.
 


Image # 3 - Starting to mix colour and blend. In Oil painting it's a challenge not to create mud at this point, but with Acrylics you just have to wait a few minutes while working on a different area.


Image # 4 - Creating texture. One of the challenges with Acrylics is that they like to suck onto the substrate and flatten. If you are skilled you can create a 3D effect by layering flat surfaces. The only other ways to create depth is to use modelling paste under the paint or to mix thick gel into the paint.

Image # 5 - Thicker texture. This is where the gel comes in.

  
Image # 6 - Intensifying light with iridecent white. I find this type of paint adds a touch of mystery to a painting but it took some time to understand that in photos and from some angles it appears like a dark splodge rather than a pretty flash.


Image # 7 - Finishing with bronze/gold highlights. These are the ones you have to be particularly careful with the shapes they create.


 



I didn't set out to paint like Ruth Andre and we use different media, but the end result is somewhat reminiscent of her style. The original photo had Magenta on the bottom, but this painting works either way, or rotated 90 degrees. The portrait aspect converts "Sunset" into a completely abstract painting and makes the iridescent paint look amazing.

I was reading a blog interviewing one of the top Daily Painters, Carol Marine and her choice of colours, or palette, caught my attention. Carol appears to sell every painting she makes for upwards of $100 and probably creates in the region of 200 paintings a year, so when she says something I sit up and listen.

Like many other top Daily Painters, Carol uses oil paint and a limited palette of ULTRAMARINE, CADMIUM YELLOW LIGHT, CADMIUM RED MEDIUM, (near primaries), ALIZARIN CRIMSON, BURNT UMBER, and TITANIUM WHITE. She says she occasionally uses PHTHALO BLUE, PERMANENT ROSE and CADMIUM LEMON (a different grouping of near primaries). Today I decided to take Carol's palette for a test drive. In  my work I use about 20 colours because I prefer to use paint direct from the tube with only slight modification because the colour shift is difficult to predict when mixing. Reducing the number of tubes to 4 plus white was going to be a challenge indeed.

The first thing I discovered is that I rarely use any of these colours. This could be due to acrylics behaving differently to oil, in that they shift colour and dry darker. I have previously found the cadmium light yellow too cool in tone and I tend to reach for the richer CADMIUM MEDIUM. I love Ultramarine, in acrylic it loses it's brilliance as it dries and tends dulls when used as a mixer. As for Cadmium Red Medium, I'm not keen on the blood-like hue and prefer the richer, cooler PYROLE or the more brilliant NAPHTHOL. In fact, the only colour I have in common with Carol is ALIZARIN CRIMSON which is a wonderful modifier for green and makes lovely mixes with CADMIUM ORANGE, or LIGHT PERMANENT, AUSTRALIAN SKY and COBALT TEAL blues. I fare better with the second line up, using PHTHALO fairly often and ROSE a little less. As for the Umber, I NEVER use any brown, but used it often when I was an oil painter.

After I had managed to find a few lonely tubes of Carol's colours, I started on a the painting above.

Forcing myself to try different colours and adding a bit of umber did seem to work OK. With slow and careful application of the three main colours, using them mainly as glazes, I was able to achieve most mixes and I think the finished painting still retains a clear, bright look. The freshness probably comes from the cadmium light yellow. The main challenge was trying to mix a nice sky blue, for which I had to resort to PHTHALO. The red made a fairly good orange with the cadmium light yellow, but I preferred using the PERMANENT ROSE as a glaze to get a brilliant orange. As I suspected, the Ultramarine dried too dark, losing the blue and turning almost black when dry, but for this particular painting that was OK.

I've blogged before about moving from oil painting to acrylics and I have to admit that I miss it. With Oils it's easier to create depth because the paint keeps it's thickness as it dries. It also stays the same colour where acrylics darken. I spend a lot of time wrestling with these two things. I long to return to oils when I can get a separate studio.

FAMOUS ARTISTS BIRTHDAY - PAUL SIGNAC - POST and NEO IMPRESSIONIST - JUNO's DREAM by SEA DEAN

11 November 1863 Paul Victor Jules Signac was born in Paris, France. Interestingly, he had the same birthdate as Edouard Vuillard who I will honour in June on the anniversary of his death.

1882 Signac was painting on the quais in Paris. Imagine, you could have walked along the Seine in 1882 and bought a Signac straight from the artist and the paint would still be wet!. He then moved to Asnieres wher he painted till 1884.
In 1884 he met Claude Monet and Georges Seurat. He was struck by the methodical working methods and colour theory of Seurat and became a faithful friend, supporter and heir. Under Seurat's influence he abandoned the short brushstrokes of Impressionism to experiment with small dots of pure color, intended to combine and blend not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye, a defining feature of pointillism. This has always captivated me and I use some of the theories in my own work. One day I intend doing a neo-pointillist series but at the moment I don't feel I would do it justice.

In 1886 he showed in the 8th Impressionist exhibition. During this period he often painted with Van Gogh and his influence can be seen when you compare the painting above with works by Van Gogh like his Wheat Field series.

On 7 November 1892 he married Berthe Roblès and his witnesses were fellow painters and archists, Alexandre Lemonier, Maximilien Luce, Camille Pissarro and Georges Lecomte. The marriage didn't last, but they remained friends for the rest of their lives.

1899 Signac published D'Eugene Delacroix au Neo-Impressionnisme which included his description of Neo-Impressionism and Divisionism He wrote several books and other articles which make an interesting read.

Signac loved to sail and after his marriage he began sailing his boat to almost all the ports of France, Holland, and around the Mediterranean as far as Constantinople. He brought back vibrant, colorful watercolors, sketched rapidly from nature, from which he created large studio canvases, carefully worked in small, mosaic-like squares of color, quite different from the tiny, variegated dots previously used by Seurat.

The top painting was completed at the same time Monet created his water lilies at Giverny; a prolific period where Monet produced many large canvases showing large, fast, almost wild brushstrokes and unusual colour combinations. At the same time Paul Signac was still carefully laying down separate dashes of colour, each one mixed with care and perfectly placed. He must have worn his shoes out going back and forth across the studio with loaded brush to lacate just the right spot.

Like many Neo Impressionists, he experimented with many styles and different media so he can be found in searches classified as a Post Impressionist, Neo Impressionist and a Pointillist.

15 August 1935 Paul Signac died in Marseilles, France.

This is a favourite painting of mine in a decorative style which I was keeping for myself. The photo in no way does justice to this piece. The center of the flower jumps right out of the painting with touches of bronze. The petals are a wild combination of cool and warm reds and the leaves are a luscious collection of green an blue.

Stunning any way you want to frame it and a fabulous gift. I've seen similar paintings retailing for over $200.

I haven't blogged about my ESSENCE paintings for a while, so for the benefit of my new followers here is a quick explanation. ESSENCE painting is akin to Feng Shui in that the painting attracts good things into the room that it graces. These paintings are created in "the zone" and leave no doubt that they are there to benefit and enhance.

COOTAMUNDRA WATTLE was painted in Australian summer and is therefore infused with cleansing sunshine. Yellow symbolizes the joy which the painting attracts and emits. The beautiful shades of hansa, indian and cadmium yellow, add a flash of colour against the violet and turquoise blue shades of the sky beyond.

This would make a particularly perfect gift for someone affected by cancer.

Unfortunately, every year, many patrons leave it to the last minute and contact me with urgent requests for a commission. I hate to say no, but there are only so many hours in a day and commissions take much longer to paint than a daily painting. Therefore, the earlier I can schedule them in, the better.

If you are thinking of asking me to paint something especially for you, I am happy to recreate any of my ACEO or postcard size paintings in a larger format. I never duplicate an original, so there will be slight variations, but the beauty of commissioning is that you can request particular additions or your favourite colours. One of the first paintings in my own personal collection was a commission of my cat added to a flower garden.
