SOLD - YUKON by Sea Dean

Yukon
8" x 10" canvas panel
16" x 20" wide white wooden frame
SOLD

This is another painting that sold during the Lake Country Coffee House solo exhibition. It has a long and varied history which I will share with you.

Back in 2011 I was staying with friends on Vancouver Island. One morning they showed me a photo in a newspaper of an indistinct and linear range of mountains in pastel shades of blue. When I had time, I painted this scene from memory, but I was never happy with the result. I don't think pastel shades work well with acrylics and at that time I hadn't discovered molding paste or gel. I put the painting aside.

A year or two later I found the painting and thought I would work on improving it, with my new skills. I added a fair amount of color and added a creek and water, but held back from changing the composition, because that was my initial inspiration. I thought it would spoil the simplicity and I also have a horror of what I call "chocolate box" compositions. I let the painting rest.

A few days later I realized that the painting was missing a foreground and decided to place a tree in the sweet spot. Suddenly it was infinitely more interesting and inviting. I still wasn't super happy, but I posted in my online shop. It didn't sell.

When curating my solo exhibition I found my favorite frame, a very wide, plain white wooden frame and I knew I wanted to use it on a particular wall. I took out all my 8" x 10" paintings and tried them in the frame one by one. As soon as I popped YUKON into the frame I knew I had a winner. All that time there was nothing wrong with the painting, it just needed a powerful frame.

I have started adding pictures to my shop of how an unframed painting would look either matted or framed and now I know why. Most paintings look good on a deep gallery wrap canvas, or with a simple frame, but others need a bit of pizzaz.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR POST IMPRESSIONIST PAINTING LOOK LIKE AN ORIGINAL

SISTERS
by Sea Dean
(after Two Women with Mango Blossom
by Paul Gaugin)
Approx 18" x 13" Canvas Panel (European Canvas Size)
NFS

This painting was a commission for a Paul Gaugin work. It has been sitting in the purchaser's closet waiting for the right frame for over a year. When I asked why, it was because there was no reasonably priced frame available in the local area. The original has a beautiful antique handmade frame and the patron wanted something similar.

Two Women with Mango Blossoms - Paul Gaugin - Original Frame

So I put my thinking cap on. Luckily there was a handy frame shop in the area selling very basic frames, but the owner was willing and had the equipment to cut and assemble, if I could find the right fancy frame it could be fitted. I looked high and low and came up with some gold framed religious icons which were nice but very flimsy.

Then I had an AHA moment. What if I took an inexpensive mirror that had a nice quality gold frame and cut it to fit the painting. The search was on. I eventually found the right look in a low end department store; my friendly framer did a great job cutting and assembling for a reasonable price and this is the result. Much nicer in real life of course. The owner is thrilled.

Do you crave a real Monet or Vermeer? I'm happy to copy any public domain painting and even go the extra mile to find a spectacular frame for it. It's much more reasonable than you imagine.

BLINGORAMA

BLINGORAMA
6" x 8" Strathmore Windpower
Sold unframed
Shown how you could frame the painting

This is a fun abstract piece that I rediscovered when sorting for an exhibition. Although it's not that apparent here, there is some crystal bling to it. I think it looks really stunning on a neutral grey wall with a silver frame.

I sometimes purchase mats and frames from the Mat Shop and so they always send me emails. I was clicking around their website the other day and I found a great tool for seeing your painting with various mats and frames. This is useful when deciding how to present your work, but you can also download files and use them for marketing even if you sell your work unframed.

This impressionist style painting is available in the Framed and Matted section of my online gallery. Ornate frames are not to everyone's taste, and they don't suit every painting, but when I popped this into the golden frame while preparing for a show, I loved it. This kind of ostentation looks wonderful in a stylish powder room or entrance area. However, I'm also happy to sell the painting with a plain black frame, or unframed if you prefer.

TO FRAME OR NOT TO FRAME

A while ago I conducted a survey on my GET YOUR ART OUT THERE Facebook Group. I gave about 20 choices with different styles and colours of frames, mats or unframed presentation. It was of no surprise that the deep gallery wrap canvas with the painting continuing around the edge, was the most popular. What was surprising, is that it was overwhelmingly the choice of both artists and buyers.

Certainly, I find that deep gallery wrap paintings are the best choice for my studio/gallery, exhibitions and local shows. However, at least 50% of my sales occur online. The challenge with online sales is that patrons don't like to pay much for the art or the shipping. Mailing within the same country is challenging enough, but sending a gallery wrap canvas internationally through Canada Post, quadruples the cost, purely because the depth doesn't fit into the "letter" category. Therefore, the package becomes an expensive parcel regardless of weight and takes longer to ship because it receives closer scrutiny at the border.

I think a good option for internet artists, is to work on a light surface, like quality watercolour paper, yupo or unmounted canvas and then mat it, ready to pop into a standard frame. By all means, offer the choice of mounting onto a wood cradle or gallery wrap canvas, but I think most buyers would prefer self-framing to keep shipping costs low. This also works for display at markets and shows with a clear bag or shrink wrap. An 8" x 10" double mat can cost $10 in Canada which is also prohibitive, so, I recently purchased a mat cutter to keep my costs low.

Online purchases need to impress twice; first at the point of sale, but also when the package arrives at its destination. A matted painting gives that all important feeling of pleasure when the buyer holds it in their hands for the first time.

What do you think? Comments are always welcome below.

FRAMING AN ACEO - Red Lily - RITCHCRAFT GALLERY

FRAMING AN ACEO

I recently visited Ritchcraft Gallery to have a chat with Cathy the owner and see how sales were going. This particular gallery loves my original ACEO because being framers, they give an opportunity to sell a frame as well. Above you can see the amazing work they did on one of my miniatures. At the same time I discovered that in the last few months one of my paintings had gone to Australia, another to France and another to Germany. They were all sent as gifts which always gives me a special glow.

RITCHCRAFT ON FACEBOOK

Thanks to the internet, my patrons are all over the world. I like to stay in touch occasionally and alert them to special events at paint a masterpiece, so I love that my online galleries keep a record for me. It is not so easy if the sale has taken place at a bricks and mortar gallery. I always attach a certificate of authenticity and a business card, but I have no way of knowing if those purchasers visit my blog or make another purchase through my online presence. Those paintings feel a bit like lost children.

If you follow my work on Daily Paintworks, you may have noticed a slight shift recently.

For several years now I have been selling my work work unframed through my online outlets. The patron can then select a frame to match their decor. This also makes paintings lighter and easier to ship and it means that my creations take up little storage room in my studio. However, in our fast paced world I'm finding that more and more buyers want to keep things simple and not spend extra time with the framing.

Usually, when I have an exhibition to prepare for, I use precious time framing when I could be creating new and exciting work. Having two systems has been time consuming and inconvenient, so I am now mounting, matting and framing selected works. As a general rule, once I have framed a painting it will sell with the frame, even online.

You may expect that this costs more, however, Thanks to my daily painting habit and my larger and more organized studio, I can work more efficiently and pass on that time savings to my patrons. As a result, my framed works are much more reasonable than you would expect.

I will continue to sell gallery wrap canvases and unframed paintings online, but you will find a large section of ready to hang works at my Daily Paintworks retail gallery here.

The slight darkening around the edge is shadow from the frame because I forgot to take the photo before I framed it. The painting is a larger version of an ACEO from last year. I love to paint in series like this because each painting develops the theme a little more.

POPPIES AND STARS

POPPIES AND STARS - by Sea Dean
POPPIES AND STARS
By Sea Dean
24" x 18" Canvas Wrap
30" x 24" Frame
Mixed Media

This may look familiar because it's a reworking of Himalayan Stars. Blue poppies are not widely known and with Remembrance Day coming up and a submission due which required red, I thought I would make a few tweaks. I so love how this turned out and the image just doesn't do it justice.

I very much admire my flower paintings peers Nancy Medina, Elena Katsyura, and Krista Eaton, so this is a nod to them all. I kept the Star Magnolias and added a few more, changed the blue poppies to red and added more, then I added some impressionistic hydrangea or lilac blossoms and reworked the background. I had never liked the glass vase so I changed that to solid blue and made it larger so that it ran off the bottom.

The composition of Himalayan Stars was much too traditional and balanced and here I focused on keeping the balance but making the whole composition asymmetrical. Another rule I try to remember is to make each corner different; here one corner is lemon, one pthalo blue, one light permanent and one lilac as a main colour.

I hope you like it.

PS sorry about the glint of light above the canvas, I was in a rush to submit this to a jury by 3pm. I will have it on exhibition at the Red Barn in Kelowna Mission area from 10am - 4pm on Saturday.

Exclusive timed Silent Auction - LOT 1 - PEACH WATERLILY - PEOPLE SKETCH - 30 in 30 COLLAGE

SILENT AUCTION - Lot 1

LOT 1 - PEACH WATERLILY

by Christina Leinemann Knittle
Mixed Media with Gold Leaf

4.5" x 6.5" Watercolour Paper
Partial Raw Edge Matted in Ivory
Framed in soft gold
Value $150
Starting Bid $20

The 30 paintings in 30 days challenge is over, so now we can focus on my exclusive SILENT AUCTION. Yay!

One day a few weeks ago, I was pondering what to offer my loyal fans and patrons to thank them for their support throughout the year. At the same time I was curating my new studio/gallery and peer collection. Space is at a premium so as much as I love art created by others, the studio/gallery should exhibit my own work not the work of others. Hmmmm! I pondered.

Then I was inspired by a thought. Why not offer parts of my personal collection and some of my own work through a silent auction with low starting bids? Because I run the auction through a standalone website, I pay no fees and can pass on the savings to the purchaser. Once the idea was born I couldn't wait to set up the website and work out a bidding system.

It's really very simple...

1. Visit the website, or come to one of my upcoming shows to view the lots.
2. Enjoy the work on offer (you can hover to see details or click to see a larger image with more details). Some is from my own hand and some is from my peer collection.
3. Choose which pieces you would like to bid on and click the link in details.
4. The link creates an email so you can send me your bidding details.
5. As bids come in I update the website and my paper record to correspond.
6. On November 15th at midnight PST bidding ends.
7. Winning bidders will receive an invoice from Paypal with the name of the work, your bid and shipping. Tax is included. Multiple items to the same bidder will be shipped together.
8. On payment your item(s) will be shipped within 3 days in plenty of time for holiday giving.

Todays painting on Daily Paintworks is actually a sketch for the people challenge. The spec. was to create a page of quick people sketches to get over the fear of putting people in paintings. I had fun as you can see. The joy of this was that tiny wobbles and extensions of lines can completely change the character you are drawing. I'm starting a new DPW Gallery category called Sketches, where you will often find experiments and preparatory sketches for low low prices. Enjoy.

And in case you're wondering, here is the collage of the 30 paintings I did for the 30 day challenge. The collage shows the whole painting if it is square, but otherwise it is a crop and you need to go to Daily Paintworks to see the whole version.

More from my fellow intrepid and brave artists attempting the 30 paintings in 30 days here

This was a little cheat on the 30 in 30 theme. I did a bit of a tweak on this painting and framed it in a gorgeous antique frame to be presented at Art Walk. I have always loved this painting but there was something which was making me uneasy about it and I finally decided that the composition was too balanced. It needed something to make it pop.

I launched in with and antique ivory loaded brush intending to do a substantial shift in the composition, but a couple of brush strokes and turning it 90 degrees did the trick. The background in this thick impasto painting is luscious, almost edible with the unusual combination of bronze, lime and violet making it truly special. But when I put it into its bold frame that was the finishing touch.

Love love love it!

I've been very busy all day matting, framing, writing certificates of authenticity, etc. and I'm very happy with the result. I can't wait to see them on display at their various exhibitions and shows. This painting is being offered at Daily Paintworks with the frame. Buy now for the best price. I will be offering more framed paintings in the lead up to the holidays so all you need to do is gift wrap and give.

MAGICAL C

MAGICAL C has been a favourite for a while and I'm surprised it hasn't sold. At the time I was experimenting with various compositions and this was based on the "C" composition. Today while trying different frames to decide on framing, I loved it in this ornate gold impressionist style frame. The problem is that the original painting was 6" x 8" and the lovely frame was 6" square. I took the plunge and decided to cut the panel smaller and now I love it so much more.

Cropping paintings is not a new idea and many masterpieces show the evidence of having been larger when they were painted. The paintings were trimmed because they had become damaged or just because the wealthy owner decided to redecorate. They also regularly painted out certain people that had fallen out of favour, but that's for another time.

I read an artist's blog some time ago (I've forgotten her name) who always painted on uncut, un-stretched canvas and decided on the size when the painting was finished. Her theory was that it offered freedom to choose a better composition. Well that is more or less what happened with MAGICAL C.

I love love love the new cropped painting in this opulent frame. :) What do you think? Do you prefer the square format or rectangular?

I'm taking part in Leslie Saeta's 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge and I'm counting this as Day One because I did tweak the composition and make a far stronger painting as a result.

This has always been a head turner and the star of my collection since the day it was first exhibited. I am currently setting up a new studio and need funds, so I am prepared to part with this special piece on a first come first served basis.

I have two options for this original art work currently available. Please contact me to purchase.

1. Professionally framed (the framing cost over $200)
2. Ready to frame but framing advised

The mixed media piece is currently in a professional custom made 2" simple black wood exhibition frame. I do not recommend hanging unframed as the edge is unfinished but I could sell without.

I am happy to lay away with a $250 deposit.
Three more installments of $250 for the unframed version or
Four more installments of $250 for the custom framed version.

If you love it, as I do, lets work something out.

THE BEST OF PRE-2011

Most of the work I produced prior to 2011, is in my private collection and that of members of my family. I worked in a variety of media including oil, watercolour, print, jewellery, pottery, papier mache, metal, installation, pen and ink, graphite etc. but it wasn't until 2011 that I took a serious interest in acrylic painting which is my current choice.

Although my oil paintings are lovely, in my opinion this is the best piece that I created prior to 2011. It took many weeks design and construction and is a riveting piece worthy of any international exhibition. It The work appears fragile, but that is the secret substrate which took a lot of experimentation to master.

Next Friday stay tuned for my 2011 Choice.

ERIN LUCY DYNAMITE FOGGOA - GET YOUR ART OUT THERE MEMBER OF THE DAY - TODAYS AUCTION

Erin Lucy Dynamite Foggoa

Lucy Dynamite is a graphic artist, traditional painter and craftsperson who lives in the woods in
Cherryville, B.C., with a lot of animals and two other humans. She has had her work showcased for a Universal Studios movie gallery, owns a roller derby company called Black Sheep Sk8, and recently started another project called Green Animal Project to bring awareness to the importance of animals in our world.

Many of her craft projects started as gifts for her four year old daughter, Molly. However, as she kept getting asked, she has turned making children’s dreamscapes and murals into a part time job.

Lucy feels EXTREMELY fortunate to wake up every day in the forest and make art surrounded by her family. Hopefully, this is evident in her work.

Find her at Lucy Dynamite Artist or Black Sheep Sk8 Roller Derby Apparel on Facebook.

Thank you Erin for being a part of GET YOUR ART OUT THERE and creating such a lovely portfolio.
