I attended the opening of "Bring out your best" KAG Members Exhibition yesterday. I must say that I was very impressed by the attention to detail. The nibblies were delicious, the music unique and the hosts attentive and gracious. It certainly makes me proud to be a member.

This is the first year that Kelowna Art Gallery has created a catalog of their members exhibition and I think they've done an amazing job. Click on the link below to see over 70 high quality recent works.

DIGITAL CATALOG

The compilers made the extra effort of re-imaging each painting for the catalog, rather than using the one submitted by the artist. Before I delivered BEYOND THE STARS to the gallery I couldn't resist making a few adjustments and there was no time to document the changes, so I am pleased to have an excellent professional image of the adjusted painting.

Can you spot the changes?

To my knowledge this is the first time my work has been included in a digital catalog so it feels like I have achieved something special. Although my painting is on the back wall of the exhibition, it is in a great position facing the door. You can see it in the first image of the digital catalog, right next to the Directors Forward.

I was inspired to create this series based on the theme for "Art Walk", a local exhibition which takes place every September in Lake Country. Once I started researching for the project I just couldn't stop myself. I have so many ideas that I'm beginning to think I missed my calling as a shoe designer. I'm not just saying this, my father used to make my shoes when I was young and I used to watch fascinated when he used his cobbling tools. I still have some of them. Then as time went by, I met and fell in love with a clicker in the Clarks shoe factory. A Clicker is the skilled worker that cuts all the leather pieces for shoes. I feel quite at home with conversations involving vamps and Cuban heels.

Yes, I've always loved shoes but I have a long history of heartache around them. I'm OK in Europe and Australia, but for some reason shoes in North America shoes don't even come close to fitting me. As a result, I've spent my entire adult life suffering from serious shoe envy. I think this may have turned my head, because I love crazy shoes. I consider them a work of art. The more way out, the better. Stay tuned for more weird and wonderful creations as I explore my personal shoe heaven.

The painting above was inspired by a shoe designed by fashion maven Vivienne Westwood, and titled with a nod to an 1855 Charles Kingsley novel and a town in Devon, UK.

PS "Shoe Heaven" will probably get into full swing in August, so if you have any ideas or requests for crazy show paintings, fire away.

The original concept was to paint two flowers growing out of a heart. I did this and then allowed the painting to take over and tell me how it wanted to proceed This is the result and I may be biased, but I love it. 

As usual with these decorative paintings there is a substantial amount of GOLDEN copper fine, my favourite iridescent, which actually looks more like bronze or gold than copper. here I've tried to photograph it to show the shine when the light is on it.

When it came time, I found it difficult to name this miniature. "Hearts and Flowers" just didn't seem to encompass all it's variations. I saw all kinds of things in the design. Do you see the face? Actually after I had seen one, I started to see more ... a clown, an owl, big bird, a shy smile. I'm sure there are more. What do you see? 

I also find this is a design which could be viewed either way.

With the 30 paintings in 30 days challenge over, my thoughts turn to romance. It is the season of love and this ACEO is my vision of a family growing with love. Perfect for Valentines.

The painting was difficult to photograph because of the irridescent paint on the grass, sun's rays and hearts. The shiny parts and the orangy brown pieces are all copper gold, which shines according to the amount of light.

I love this happy little miniature and I hope you do too.

Today I was exploring PINTEREST opportunities to promote the ART PARTY. First I created a board for anyone to post their submissions. It is relatively simple. You just need set up a free PINTEREST account, link to this blog and choose your photo.

Challenge:- For Earth Hour, create a painting of any wildlife and I will share it on my blog. Earth Hour is an initiative by the World Wildlife Fund whose symbol is a Panda but you could paint a leopard, tiger, baboon, giraffe, koala, owl, or something endangered in your neck of the woods. Send to blue sky red earth at live dot ca.

I have a more decorative piece today. The small photo shows some of the bronze highlights which occur throughout the painting. As you see, I've added a touch more orange since then.

I was going to dedicate a special blog to this milestone, but today my blog experienced a surge which sent me over 1,000 page views. Thank you everyone who is supporting me by viewing and sharing. I am humbled. And appropriately here is my painting for today.

I was in a whimsical mood today. Actually I started this painting yesterday, but it wasn't going well so I set it aside and I'm glad I did because this is version far more lighthearted.
The impressionist, pastel-like background moves us from snowy winter to warm summer days bathed in sunlight.

I like the look of pastels but don't like the delicate nature of the finished work, so I developed this multi-layer Acrylic technique. Unfortunately the camera just can't capture the delicate hues of warm light blue, violet, lime, and pink or the lovely bronze highlights in the grass, heart and sun. You will have to take my word for it and enjoy the effect when you make the purchase.
