CAT VIII

Artfinder has just informed me that my one finger drawing CAT VIII has been included in their PICASSO collection https://www.artfinder.com/staff-picks/pablo-picasso/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=transactional&utm_campaign=selfservice_featured_in_marketing

I have many more one finger drawings in my Artfinder shop that I would perhaps consider more Piccasso like, but this cat is supet cute, he’s still on the lookout for mice even when sleeping
More can be seen and purchased via my Artfinder Gallery www.artfindet.com/sea-dean

If you don't see the size you’re looking for, I can print a limited edition in various sizes or even take a commission to turn the drawing into a large painting.

I Wish I could Fly

I WISH I COULD FLY 16” x 20” paper collage and feather  $295

I WISH I COULD FLY is a collage containing a Sea Dean one finger ipad drawing print and collage including real feathers in the thought bubble.

I have discovered a new and superior method of printing my iPad work and now I have more control over the cropped size and finish. I’m excited to have more flexibility. Here I discovered what I have long suspected, that the drawings, created on my 6” x 8” iPad have the capacity to print much larger. I’m not sure yet, how large I can go without losing definition, but at least 16” x 20” and possibly double that. Stay tuned for more experimentation.....

Colors include shades of white, black, yellow, orange, a dash of pink nose and gold

To purchase this collage please contact me through this blog as it is currently on exhibition at Lake Country Art Gallery, Lake Country, BC

COOL CAT

COOL CAT
4"  x 6" Strathmore 140lb 300 g/m2
Original watercolor

I can't stay away from painting animals too long. I was inspired to paint this photo when I couldn't sleep a few nights ago. Those eyes grabbed me and pulled me in and said "Paint me, paint me!". I usually paint cats that have slitty pupils, but these wide open blue pools were so beautiful that I reached for my handy little watercolour set and got started.

At first I thought I would do a quick sketch, but it was about 4am when I finally put my brush down. It's amazing how long a small painting can take sometimes. They always say don't attempt to paint every piece of hair or fur, but in this case I think it works beautifully. Unfortunately every hair was carefully considered and that took time.

I've received word that I have at least one sale at our new airport location and perhaps more. I'm contemplating what to submit for the next call, closing in April. It is requested that we focus on locally inspired art. Visitors are attracted to our area for so many reasons, the lakes, the fishing, the skiing, the wineries, the fruit, hiking, water sports etc. that there are so many options to choose from. Last time I submitted mainly local scenes on canvas, but I haven't painted many lately.

We can only submit 10 works and they are exhibited for half a year, so it's a bit nerve racking. Small, inexpensive and stunning sells well, but 10 x $50 is only $500 less commission and fees so not a good payback for all the work. 10 x $100 sounds better, but they would have to be totally awe inspiring to sell at that price in a departure lounge.

I'm considering wildlife for a change and I don't mean what spills out of the local clubs at closing time.

MEMORIAL PET PORTRAIT PROGRESS SHOTS - SESHA

SESHA
by Sea Dean
8" x 6" Strathmore Windpower
SOLD

This is a commission memorial pet portrait. Sesha passed recently and her owner misses her furry presence. She used to love to sit near the heater in the bathroom on her peachy coloured blanket, so I incorporated the colour in the background. When her owner walked into the bathroom to find her she always had a guilty look as if she had been stealing a nap on duty.

Once the owner has approved the portrait I will add some of Seshas ashes to the fur to make a special memorial to a much loved puss.

If you've lost a much loved companion I would be happy to do the same thing for you. My Memorial Portraits start at $105 for an 8" x 6" U Frame it painting. I can also mat and frame if you prefer.

GINGER JELLY and SYLVESTER

Today I communicated with my female ancestors.

No, this is not some kind seance blog! I spent a happy few hours preparing a range of delicacies for winter enjoyment. Ginger Jelly, Crystalized Ginger and Ginger Sugar. Yum!

It was my paternal grandmother that taught me how to make jam. Before she married she worked in a grand house, like Downton Abbey. She was the equivalent of poor overworked and underpaid Daisy, a combination of scullery maid and under cook and for all the years I knew her she was a hard worker. She raised a family of 4 boys and 2 girls on a shoestring and she really was a pro at making something from nothing.

Whenever I'm in the kitchen making preserves, I feel as if my grandmother, is standing behind me, testing and tasting and giving gentle words of advice. Crystallized ginger really brings her close, because she kept a pot of the delicious and expensive treat in her private cupboard. This sounds strange, but when I was a child, a jar of ginger cost the equivalent of a days wages, so to her it was like a pot of gold.

Today I managed to make five jars of Ginger Jelly, 900g of crystalized Ginger and two jars of Ginger Sugar; when I calculate the cost, I saved about $30 and had a pleasant afternoon with Nana.

This to me is a perfect day.

SYLVESTER

Image of street sign
SYLVESTER smile

SYLVESTER by Sea Dean 3.5" x 2.5" ACEO Framed as shown
Sylvester is an ACEO I created after a visit to Le Marais, Paris. In a museum there was a collection of old metal street signs which were rescued when the whole area was demolished due to disease. As it was a Jewish quarter, they used signs to advertise their business. This sign may have been for an animal doctor or a ratcatcher. I loved that smirk on his face and those round eyes so I'm thinking more likely it was a ratcatcher sign.

I chose to frame him to match his amber eyes and rusty fur and he is available in my Daily Paintworks gallery.

More from my fellow intrepid and brave artists attempting the 30 paintings in 30 days here

I worked on a large abstract painting today, but it needs to dry before I finish it, so I did a little sketch.

The sketch was created using FW Artists Ink which appears like shiny bubbles in images until it dries completely. When the line drawing had set for a couple of minutes I added ordinary drugstore alcohol to dilute and move the wetter ink around. The effect is like willow pattern or delft porcelain.

A fun little piece.

The original colourful kitty collectable is sold, but I'm always happy to recreate a painting in a different size. No two paintings are alike, but you will be thrilled with your commissioned work, that's a promise. I think this kitty would be great painted on a 20" x 16" gallery wrap canvas. And now is a great time to order a large size commission because all my paintings 100 sq inch or over are only $1 per square inch for a limited time.
Visit my new website for slideshows of my work, Art Cards, Art Postcards, ACEO, etc.

My friend Jo recently had to wear a cast and to her chagrin, spent more time than usual with her feet up on the sofa. Poppy (the family cat) thought this was great fun and spent most of Jo's foot elevating time on her nice warm lap.

I loved the angle of this photo, taken from the lappee's point of view, but as I told Jo, I didn't know if I would be able to pull off that large white furry bum without it looking like a big white blob. Luckily I think I did it and I don't think Poppy cares that she looks like she has a gigantic rear end.

Thanks for the challenge Jo.

I am currently taking bookings for pal portraits starting at $49

ORIGINAL PAINTING BY SEA DEAN

Super Cat was a hero among kitties. He was always on the lookout for a puss in distress and would instantly fly to the rescue. He was so easily recognised by his magnificent whiskers and finely sharpened claws, that he had to wear mittens, socks and a kerchief, as well as a mask. Of course in his universe all kitties had lime green calico fur, striped with yellow and black, so at his day job he blended in quite nicely.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY, NORMAN ROCKWELL - ROCKWELL CAT, MINI MASTER SERIES

Rockwell-Norman-LOC.jpg
ROCKWELL CAT
PAINTING BY SEA DEAN
4" x 4" Mini Master on Canvas Panel
Homage to Famous Artists on their birthday

To view my Gallery or purchase this painting please visit Daily Paintworks. Larger originals or prints may be available by contacting me.

My Mini Master series are Such a wonderful way to kick-start an art collection. They are on durable canvas panel with painted edges, so they can be displayed on a small easel, mounted on the wall with 3M poster tabs, or framed. They are every bit as beautiful as a larger version, but take up less space.

You could add to the collection over time, on special occasions like Valentines, Easter, Graduation, Anniversaries, Birthdays, Thank you, Hostess gifts etc. My growing collection can be viewed on Pinterest.

There is also a sister series in the same size which you can mix and match. These are original Sea Dean paintings as opposed to paintings inspired by the Masters. In my Daily Paintworks Gallery you can search for 4x4, Mini Master, or Mini Masterpieces to find them all easily.

This was a tough homage for me because my painting style, paint and surface are completely different to Norman Rockwell, who was an illustrator rather than a fine artist. The most difficult part was finding something simple enough for a small canvas. I happened upon this detail from "Tom Sawyer - The Medicine" and just fell in love with this orange cat. Although his style is usually drawing on paper and colouring in afterwards, this painting is more akin to my painterly style. He cleverly added the cat for charm, but chose similar colours for the background so it didn't detract from the subject which is Tom Sawyer being given some medicine.

NORMAN ROCKWELL

Norman Perceval Rockwell was born in New York, NY, USA February 3, 1894. He was an American painter and illustrator, with a broad popular appeal in the USA for their view of American culture. Norman was an early starter. He transferred from high school to the Chase Art School at the age of 14. He went on to the National Academy of Design and finally to the Art Students League, where, he was taught by Thomas Fogarty, George Bridgman, and Frank Vincent DuMond
Norman's breakthrough came in 1912 with a book illustration for Carl H. Claudy's Tell Me Why: Stories about Mother Nature. Then, at the age of nineteen, he became the art editor for Boys' Life, the magazine of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), producing illustrations, calendars and covers for the publication. He is also famous for more than four decades of cover illustrations  for The Saturday Evening Post

His best-known works are the Willie Gillis series, Rosie the Riveter, The Problem We All Live With, Saying Grace and the Four Freedoms series.
From Wikepedia

Norman Rockwell lived a long and highly productive life, which came to an end in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, on November 8, 1978, aged 84.

FREE PRINT - PALS PET PORTRAITS - ESSENCE PAINTINGS

NAPTIME - PAL PORTRAIT
If you're organized, you are already have your Holiday giving list underway and are well ahead of the bulk of us. Kudos to you.

Unfortunately, every year, many patrons leave it to the last minute and contact me with urgent requests for a commission. I hate to say no, but there are only so many hours in a day and commissions take much longer to paint than a daily painting. Therefore, the earlier I can schedule them in, the better.

If you are thinking of asking me to paint something especially for you, I am happy to recreate any of my ACEO or postcard size paintings in a larger format. I never duplicate an original, so there will be slight variations, but the beauty of commissioning is that you can request particular additions or your favourite colours. One of the first paintings in my own personal collection was a commission of my cat added to a flower garden.

GAIA ENERGY- ESSENCE PAINTING
Most of my commissions are PALS pet portraits guided by the owners photos. I also commission ESSENCE paintings which are designed to enhance your environment similar to Feng Shui but with less structure. Above and below are some examples of PALS and ESSENCE.

I couldn't resist this fluffy puss. I love cats. They have such individual personalities, likes and dislikes and they are great teachers.

If things aren't quite right in their furry world or if their human companions are having a bad day, they really let you know what's important. Pretty soon they will find a way to get your full attention.

Some techniques are:-
1. Looking cute
2. Sitting on your work
3. Loud yowling
4. Knocking something onto the floor

...... I could go on all day. Needless to say they eventually get whatever is wrong fixed because otherwise it will dominate your day.

This puss looks like something needs attention don't you think?

SOLD - however this painting may be available as a print or another original in the same series may be available.

This painting is SOLD but I'm happy to take a commission for a similar work. Contact me to inquire about prints and Art cards.

I totally love this painting but it had little recognition when I first posted it (why?). The colour combination is stunning and the bronze highlights are eye catching. I think the lack of clicks may be because the dynamic style is more suited to a very large room sized painting, which I would be happy to create for someone looking to make a powerful statement. So here it is again.

I appreciate comments and feedback on any Art you see on my blog or in my DPW Gallery.
