CARWASH 1

A series of digital images taken with an iPad inside a car being auto washed.

I love the soft colours and texture of this image. It almost feels like you are having a nice soapy shower. An endless source of conversation. Limited Editions available by contacting me.

Inspired By ...

Reclining Nude VII by Sea Dean - Limited Edition One Finger iPad Drawing

After my work was selected to be in an editorial collection on Artfinder, I did some exploring. They have a new curatorial team who are working like fiends to market their artists better; part of the team is building collections to make it easier for buyers. My painting THE SIMPLE LIFE was selected for INSPIRED BY THE GREATS - Rothko, so I was curious which other masters they considered ‘Great’. Here is a list of their current ‘Inspired By’ sections.

Hockney - Monet - Picasso - Turner - Degas - O’Keefe - Rothko - Warhol - Cezanne - Pollock - Van Gogh - Matisse - Gaugin - Lichtenstein - To the Point(illism) - Renaissance - Dali - Miro - Minimalism - Richter - Lucian Freud - Klimpt - Mondrian - Banksy - Basquiat - Francis Bacon - Hirst - Kusama - Folk Art

I’m sure this will change over time, but interesting to see who is foremost in the team psyche, or perhaps foremost in inspiration of the artists. When I look at the list 12 out of the 27 can conservatively be considered influences on my work, although I was inspired by David Hockney to explore iPad work, and I didnt count him.

Above is one of my Limited Edition one finger iPad drawings inspired by Picasso. Available in my Artfinder shop here.

A little off piste today with this self portrait.

One of my favorite Gallery Managers gave me a heads up that there was a portrait exhibition on the horizon, so I thought I'd get some practise in.

This is a brave step for me, because I've wanted to start a series of self portraits every 5 years or so and I've always chickened out. Artist that have done this say its very revealing. I took this from a black and white image on government ID circa 1979.  Scary!

The joy of working with the simple draw app in Notes on my iPad is that I'm constantly learning how to expand the capabilities. This is the first drawing where I've started to use the colored pencil tool. I've always admired per portraits in colored pencil, so perhaps in time I will be able to create some myself within iPad Notes.

I had a request to add dogs to my new iPad line drawing series, so I went for a test run. I found it difficult to condense the character of a dog down to a few lines and this was my first attempt. I think he's cute don't you?

The fourth of the 30 iPad drawings I plan this month. Similar to yesterday but more detailed and intense. I think this really captures the untouched bush around our 80 mile natural lake. The sage brush has an unforgettable smell in late summer. I used to forage for sage to make smudge bundles and this time of year was the best season.

Watch the Eclipse Today - Be Safe

August 21, 2017 — Total Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse is when the Moon completely covers the Sun. The handy link below has a search area at the top where you can type in your nearest city and all kinds of fascinating information will pop up specific to you. TIP:- Put the city and country without a comma.

If you want to view general information, click on links dated August 21st. You will see three animations and I found the center one most useful. For analytical readers, you can click around and find eclipses for years ahead, images, animations and graphs.

https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/solar/2017-august-21

NASA Television is offering a special live program, “Eclipse Across America: Through the Eyes of NASA” with real-time coverage of the event from coast to coast. The nearly four-hour program will include unprecedented images of the Aug. 21 eclipse from numerous spacecraft -- including the International Space Station – high-altitude aircraft, balloons and ground observations. Each will offer a unique vantage point for the eclipse.
Additionally, the broadcast will include live coverage of activities in parks, libraries, stadiums, festivals and museums across the nation and on social media. To watch the August 21st NASA TV eclipse broadcast online and access interactive web content and views of the eclipse from these assets, visit:https://www.nasa.gov/eclipselive
Be safe. Read the information about the correct way to view the eclipse, because every eclipse many people disregard the information and end up with vision problems.
The above iPad drawing, THE BOYS OF 36 is available in a limited edition 8" x 10" canvas print for $65 plus shipping by contacting me here

Simple Ipad Drawing - Female Form II

Recently I decided to work with my iPad on a series of simplified drawings and it's been and all absorbing and mind blowing process. I've always loved the human form and I believe that the purest form of figure drawing is the nude. Although I started the series with nudes, I've diversified to cats and landscapes. I will probably also include flowers, birds and fish, but I will always return to simplified nudes.

Images below are copyrighted and are available in art card form by contacting me.

Simply iPad Drawing - Cats

I've admired simplified drawing for as long as I can remember. In attempting the technique myself, I've never been satisfied with the drag of the medium on the substrate. It seems to me that it's important to use a flowing medium and a super smooth substrate to create awe inspiring simple line. The challenge there is that flowing medium generally has a mind of its own on a smooth surface.

At school and art school I was taught that an artist should never use an eraser when drawing; it's one of those rules that just beg to be broken, like never using white watercolor paint. Sadly when drawing with graphite (pencil), unless you have a great technique with a specialist eraser, it is obvious that you have erased a section. Being able to erase without leaving a mark frees up creativity.

Since I began iPad drawing I've used the eraser and translucent white-out tool as an integral part of the design. Critics have praised me for allowing the marks to show and in fact making them important to the piece. Below you can see one of my most popular pieces BIRCHES iPad Drawing, which clearly show this technique. Birches is available in a limited edition 8" x 10" print by contacting me here

Recently I decided to work with my iPad on a series of super simplified drawings and it's been and all absorbing and mind blowing process. The iPad is a lovely smooth surface and the medium is digital printing so no problem there with runs. I also liberally erase or use the back button to correct, so no restrictions there. I love iPad drawing so much that its difficult to pull myself away again to paint with acrylics.

I've always loved the human form and I believe that the purest form of figure drawing is undraped. Although I started this series with nudes, I've diversified to cats and landscapes: I will probably add
flowers, birds and fish, as I continue to explore, but my first love will always be simplified nudes.

For those with delicate sensibilities I am starting here with my cats. Currently each cat drawing is available in art card form by contacting me here. $5 each plus shipping. The cards are 5" x 6.5" and come with an envelope in an archival crystal clear bag. As I update my website I will be adding them to the shop and also my Artfinder gallery. Daily Paintworks is in the process of allowing print purchases so I will add them there when I can.

I'm also in the early stages of designing larger prints on bamboo paper or canvas, which are gorgeous, so I'll keep you informed when they become available.

Stay tuned for a sneak peek at some of the simplified nudes.

A Little Behind

A Little Behind

Actually my behind is much bigger than I would like, but what I'm referring to here is how slack I've been at posting. It's certainly not because I haven't been working, it's because I've been so busy Painting, cataloging, restocking my galleries, accounting, scheduling and living, that time just got away from me. I was quite shocked to see I havent posted for two weeks.

Locally we've had some trials, first with extensive run off flooding around the creeks and properties bordering the lakes, then fire season arrived with a bang and for weeks we've been trapped inside peering out through veils of smoke and wondering if we would ever be able to enjoy summer. When the wind shifts we dash down to the pool to swim some lengths, but all my plans for daily walks in the park have been put on hold.

The abstract above is one of my recent iPad drawings entitled Zorro for obvious reasons. I'm quite taken with it. As always my IPad work is available in limited edition canvas prints. Just contact me here.

6" x 8" - $55 + shipping

I will do my best to catch up over the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more new work, interesting idea, tips and tricks etc. Follow my blog, Pinterest, etc by clicking the various buttons around this blog.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - FRIDA KAHLO

FRIDA
Acrylic on Deep Wrap Canvas
18" x 24"
(Unfinished)

This painting is nearly finished but not quite. It started life as a practise piece for Art Battle and I enjoyed painting it so much that I kept going past the 20 mins and 10 mins touch up. I'm not sure portraits are good candidates for my fast paintings because its so important to get the features right.
Nevertheless she will be available and if you love the painting contact me to have first refusal when it is complete.

FRIDA KAHLO
Frida Kahlo de Rivera
born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderón
(July 6, 1907 – July 13, 1954)

Today we honor Frieda Kahlo, a Mexican artist and a lady of great strength and character. Since her death in 1954 at the age of 47, Frieda has become something of a cult heroine. She was married to one of Mexicos greatest stars, Diego Rivera and she was also an artist in her own right, specializing in extraordinary self-portraits. She overcame many difficulties and is a great example for any female artist struggling to succeed.

Chicken and Champagne

CHICKEN AND CHAMPAGNE
5" x 7" Slim wrap canvas
Professional Acrylic and Champagne Sparkles
Bid or Buy at Daily Paintworks

The Okanagan has been growing grapes for over 40 years, but in the past five, wineries have been popping up around every corner. Its not just the tourists that love our wine, us locals frequent the many bistros and patios during summer. Many offer free entertainment and even picnic ares for the family. The largest winery restaurants even stay open year round.

Ms. Chicken lured Azule away from his Ogopogo hunting expedition for a pleasant day vinyard hopping. Azul had heard about our champagne method wines and wanted to take some bottles home for his friends. We sat on a terrace with our wine to enjoy the view. TC found the sparkly bubbles quite fascinating and before I could stop her, she had hopped into my champagne bowl. She said it was quite exhilarating, a cross between a jacuzzi and a polar bear swim.

I tried and tried to get a good image of this painting:There it was sparkling in the sun with the deep impasto creating dimensional shadows, but every photo came out dull. This is definately not a dull painting, during the day it sparkles and at night it glows. You will have to use your imagination.

Sad to say the traveling companions will be leaving the Okanagan for their next adventure. They will take with them some wonderful memories and many souvenir postcards of their visit.

A fond farewell TC and Azule.
