This was inspired by the Daily Paintworks "Look Up" challenge of the week. It is also # 30 of the Leslie Saeta 30 paintings in 30 days challenge.
Yes, I've been struggling to post work to my blog lately and I gave up on trying to post to Leslie Saetas blog, but I actually created 32 paintings for the challenge, some digital, some watercolor and some acrylic. Tomorrow I will publish all 32 in collage form and I will catch up with the missing paintings in October.
Thanks for putting up with the teething problems during the changeover to new technology. By the way, I think you can see this but it seems murky to me, the original is much more impressive.

What attracted me to this photo from "Paint my Photo" was the coloured circles in the background. I know this is caused by a particular lens but I've often walked in the forest after rain and almost felt the rain drops all around like this. My tropical leaf has a tiny drop of gold at the end of one point.
I've always loved drop shaped things, with most of my favourite earrings being in this shape. For some reason I believe that drops are full of potential. You never know how long one will hold on and when they will let go and fall into the unknown. Letting go unlocks the door to so much potential that will never be reached by holding on and living in the past.
Perhaps this is something that exists only in my mind. Do you like raindrops?

He certainly did didn't he?
I've recently rediscovered a book on Van Gogh and have enjoyed revisiting his life and his work. His paintings certainly reflected his unstoppable passion with almost frenzied brush strokes, intense colour and deep impasto as if he was trying to press the paint right into the soul of the viewer.
Like Vincent, I am passionate about my
work as a Professional Artist. I love colour, deep impasto and noticeable brushwork, but frenzy is
not for me. When I paint, a deep sense of calm settles inside me and I enter a
different world. I could paint for days without a need to eat or
sleep and I often think that this is must be what heaven must be like. However, being an Artist is a tough profession emotionally, physically and mentally. You need to have a strong spirit to survive and it's no wonder that Van Gogh was overcome by the enormity of the task.

I
also have a passion for teaching and passing on my knowledge. This
Saturday I met with a wonderful group who are registered for my next
"Paint a Masterpiece" class; many of them excellent Artists from
different media who are unhappy with their Acrylic work.
As with any
media there are many unique tricks to working with Acrylics and these
must be learned in order to improve. I learned the hard way struggling with trial and error, but in my one day "Paint a Masterpiece" class I pass on many useful techniques, and I watch my students
improve in front of my eyes. It is so rewarding. If you would like to

So back to Van Gogh ..
Thanks to my extraordinary Artistic life, I think I probably will die of passion. What a way to go!

The Hibiscus is a large, luscious tropical flower which comes in a variety of bright colours. It is the state flower of beautiful Hawaii.
I love Hibiscus' for their sweeping lines and sensual essence. In the tropics women wear them as a symbol of their status, behind the right ear (available) or left (taken). They are also used used to decorate food platters and divers wipe their goggles with them to prevent them fogging.
Partly because of their impressive size, the Hibiscus is considered quite auspicious. In Korea, the hibiscus is a symbol of immortality; in Malaysia it stands for courage, honor, and life and in China the flower symbolizes virginity, gentleness, wealth, and fame. The orange/yellow Hibiscus in particular represents friendship, hence the name of this painting.
(Bright Yellow, Orange, Red and Bright Blue are difficult to capture with a camera lens. This painting is much more luminous in real life. There is a cardinal rule not to varnish before you have photographed and scanned but I've sometimes found that varnishing helps. In this supplementary photo I wanted to demonstrate the thickness of the paint rather than the colour because the primary photo looks thin which is not accurate. There is no white on this painting, that is the light shining on the thick impasto.)
Tip: When painting flowers pay attention to hard and soft edges and paint with a light touch. It helps to use transparent washes.

The photo that inspired this painting was taken by my good friend Bob Jones. Bob recently retired and took a solo bicycle trip around the coast of Great Britain for charity. He has many beautiful photos from his trip and others. He has an "eye" for beautiful scenes and I'm grateful he allows me to paint from his work so we can all travel with him.
Tip: If you are using ordinary Acrylics, plan your colour scheme and place a SMALL amount of each on a sta-wet palette before you start. There is little time to fuss with mixing colours so you must plan in advance. Retarder or slow drying Acrylics like GOLDEN OPEN help to extend drying time, but it is still advisable to keep detail to a minimum and work quickly.

I've had this little guy in my "must paint" file for some time but he just didn't fit the criteria for any of my exhibitions. Luckily as my mandate for 30 in 30 is to have fun, I reckon he fits the bill. I don't know the name of this critter but he was voted the most colourful animal in the world last year and I reckon he deserves it. The original painting has far more delicate detail than the camera could capture. If you order "Beaux Jangles" you'll be pleasantly surprised.

I could see he was pretty fancy but didn't get the whole impact of his lovely designer skin till I laid out tube after tube of paint . The challenge with such a colourful subject is how do you paint the background? You could choose white or a light neutral - boring! Black or almost black - dramatic! Any single colour in the subject works and each gives it's own slant on the completed work. I chose cool colours from the palette and painted them swirling around to echo the focal point of the round eye socket and give the impression that it was how he was seeing the world.
TIP: Fussy brushstrokes overpower a complex subject. Bold colour demands bold strokes.
