It’s that time of year

Cool Jasperware by Sea Dean

The big day is racing towards us and it’s the time of year where we all sit back and review. We’re not the only ones, as the bulk of my incoming emails seem to be desperate attempts aimed at shoppers, or early reviews. I love reviews because someone has done the complex analyticl work for me and I can simply browse their findings. I will be compiling my personal review for 2018, but in the meantime here are some links to cool reviews and predictions I enjoyed recently

Artfinder - Top 30 Artists of 2018
I don’t know what is the top art platform in terms of sales, but Artfinder are up there with the best. Their system is superb, there is no monthly fee and their analysis is extremely useful if you want to sell more art. This is a must read!

7047 Abstract III by Sea Dean

Real Simple - Design Trends 2019
Artists will find these trends exciting.

For me it’s good to see that “Natural Finishes” are continuing to trend. I plan more wood sculptures in 2019 and I’ve just spent a year renovating and totally consumed with natural home decor. I am taking a conservative, traditional condo kicking and screaming into the contemporary world with an emphasis on trees and nature. Aaccording to Real Simple (big sigh of relief) the big natural trend is going to continue for some time.

Sherwyn Williams - Most popular paint colors in 2019
It’s always a good idea for the artist to keep one eye on home decor trends. Patrons buy for many reasons, but ultimately Art must fit their decor. For decorative pattern and abstract artists I prdict 2019 will be a big year

30 PAINTINGS IN 30 DAYS - THIRTEEN - PEACEFUL LAKE

PEACEFUL LAKE
10" x 10" Deep Wrap Canvas
By Sea Dean

This acrylic painting serves as my thirteenth entry into the 30 in 30 challenge. Follow my blog so you don't miss any.

This painting is all about the clouds. I wanted to create an assymetrical composition with very simple land forms. We've had a lot of these puffy clouds above our lakes this year, although at the moment the hillsides are covered in our famous powdery snow. I'm preparing for my spring shows at the moment and no one wants to buy snowy paintings during our glorious spring weather.

This painting may be purchased separately or grab all three and you have the triptych below. Here you is the left hand panel. The painting is highly textured, especially the snowy mountain peaks. It is painted on premium heavy duty deep gallery wrap canvas which is designed to last a lifetime.

If you purchase the triptych you don't have to place them close together as shown. Because the painting follows around the side it creates a 3D effect and you can separate them by several feet without losing the continuity.

GLIMMER ON THE LAKE

GLIMMER ON THE LAKE
10" x 10" Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas
SOLD

For those of you that heard about the fires in Kelowna, B.C. a few years back, this is the view from the homes that burned down. I've been up that way a few times recently taking images to paint and I can see why people would want to rebuild. Down below in the valley you can see the WAC Bennet Bridge, Knox Mountain, downtown Kelowna, Lower Mission and across the lake part of the First Nation Reservation.

This painting sold at SKYWAY and I will be painting many more views like this for the airport.

BLACK MOUNTAIN VISTA by Sea Dean - Frayed and Feathered Studio Tour

BLACK MOUNTAIN VISTA
10" x 10" Deep Gallery Wrap
Reserved for Skyway Kelowna Airport

This painting has been submitted to Skyway and I'm sure they'll love it and it will sell very quickly. However, I do have other paintings in the series available. I can also paint one especially for you in a size that suits your space.

If you're in the Okanagan, come out to Ancient Hill Winery for the Frayed and Feathered Studio Tour. There you can see more of my work as well as prints and art cards. The tour is this weekend and you can taste wine and have a picnic lunch at the same time. It's a beautiful location overlooking the valley.

NEW PAINTINGS and A BIG SUBMISSION

BLACK MOUNTAIN VISTA 10" x 10" - On Hold
I thought you would like to see my latest landscapes. These are part of my 10 painting submission for Skyway at Kelowna Airport which went in today. The jury process takes about 6 weeks. If you make it through the jury process, the paintings are exclusive to the shop until sold or returned, which is anything up to six months later. Therefore, once submitted I effectively cannot sell these paintings except via Skyway.

OGOPOGOS ISLAND 8" x 10" On Hold
This island is really called Rattlesnake Island and is about half way down the 80 mile long Okanagan Lake. This central location is probably the reason that legend has it Ogopogo lives in a cave under the island. I've often seen strange currents in this area which seem to come out of nowhere, so perhaps it's Ogopogo going for a swim.

OKANAGAN SAIL 8" x 8" On Hold
I went for a drive with a friend to pick up some paintings from an exhibition. On the way I took over 400 images and some were of this sail boat. I used to love sailing, but now I don't know anyone with a boat. I must admit I would love to be out on the water in this one.

OKANAGAN SUNSET 8" x 10" On Hold
Similar to another painting from a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to work on the effect of a sunset sky and reflection on water. I love the way the hills look in this painting.

TERRACE MOUNTAIN 10" x 8" On Hold
The snowy peak right at the top of this painting is Terrace Mountain. It's a lot bigger and taller than it looks, but the lower hills surround and almost cover it most of the time. The mountain has a flat top which makes it quite distinctive. This was from an image I took in early spring, most of the snow has gone now.

WHITE MOUNTAIN III

WHITE MOUNTAIN III
Acrylic on Deep Wrap Canvas
10" x 10"

Continuing with my winter theme, this is a painting which can be purchased as a standalone, or with White Mountain I and II to hang along a hallway or above a bed or couch. Each painting in the series works just as well alone, but they look spectacular together.

This painting may be purchased separately or as a triptych which I will be showing in all it's glory on January 3rd. Here you see the central panel. The painting has a substantial amount of texture, especially in the snowy mountain peaks. It is painted on premium heavy duty deep gallery wrap canvas which is designed to last a lifetime.

Mountains are something I love and they are a recurring theme in my work. Before I was a daily painter, I was a daily skier so I have first hand experience of their beauty and awesome presence. I've traveled extensively in the Coastal and Rocky Mountains as well as the Alps and the endless vistas take my breath away.

At this time of year the snow is fresh and crisp like a wedding cake, the air is icy and the powdery snow can often be seen blowing off the peaks in sparkling clouds as depicted here. It is an exhilarating experience to be up in the mountains far away from the bustle of city life and you can bring that feeling into your home with the WHITE MOUNTAINS TRIPTYCH.

THE FACEBOOK POKE - Glimmer on the Lake

GLIMMER ON THE LAKE by Sea Dean
I've been working on this painting for some time. The challenge was the angle and the sense of distance. I've had some requests for local scenes and so I'm working on painting a few to exhibit in some upcoming shows. This depicts our new bridge which has made such a difference to the area west of the lake. I will take a better photo in the light tomorrow. It's late and the colour balance is a bit off in places, but you get the jist. Available on Daily Paintworks.

THE FACEBOOK POKE

I was poked today. I've had pokes before and never really knew why and so I ignored them. They seem to come out of the blue and not connected to anything I've said or done. Today I thought I had better investigate. This is what a Google gave me.

Following are the correct meanings of poking at facebook.
1. A “poke” is basically someone trying to get your attention.
2. If you poke someone not in your network and they poke back, you can view their profile even if your not their friend!

As I suspected, meaningless and vaguely dangerous.

Have you ever used a poke and why? Did you know about #2? Leave a comment.

LIBERATE YOUR ART POSTCARD SWAP - Artist Carlyn Clark

Sorry if you've already seen this. It published on the wrong day, so you get the joy of seeing Carlyn's work twice.

This lovely design is the postcard I received from Carlyn Clark. It is a super unusual warped tartan effect which is quite mesmerizing. See more of Carlyn's work here.
Postcard by Carlyn Clark

On the back Carlyn has written a quote from John Baldessari ...

"Believe that art is what is left when words are exhausted."

I've pictured the postcard nestled in a pot of my flowers which I'm quite proud of. I moved in July last year and my balcony flowers didn't make it. My new balcony is south facing and the air con belches hot air onto it, so flowers have to be babied.

I was determined this year to start early and give them a good foundation before the heat arrives. Therefore I have filled my planters early and I'm bringing them inside every night. We are still having frost at night here, even though it can go up to 20 centigrade during the day. This potful seems to be enjoying this treatment the most. It has a coral coloured succulent Kalanchoe, a luscious mid pink Geranium and a bright white wave Petunia.

I wanted to find something in my work that echoed Carlyn's style and the painting above seemed to fit because it is so avant garde. It is partially made with a sort of ink blot process using acrylic ink, then embellished.

MANDALA - SAYING THANK YOU

MANDALA I
By Sea Dean

One of my best friends died a few years ago and before he did, he wanted to complete one last project. As he was an animator, he chose a moving mandala which opens out as you move into the center. A friend wrote music for it and he produced a DVD.

Not long after completion the cancer took him, but I have fond memories of being crammed into his garden shed surrounded by computer screens and Dugg excitedly sharing how he had progressed. I was told the video was posted on the internet, but I couldn't find it. Contact Tammie to learn more.

So thank you Dugg for the lovely memory.

The most difficult part and the most engrossing was getting those circles exactly right. The slightest wiggle of the brush made a difference, and I can understand why those Tibetan monks spend weeks making mandalas with coloured sand. The painting changes colour with the light because of that bright blue texture and bronze circle. A great piece for a quiet corner.

A WEEKLY THANK YOU MESSAGE

From Oprah to scientific researchers, it seems like everyone’s getting on the gratitude train.

Sure, amping up your casual “thank yous” is a fine start. But to really reap the rewards, go a little bigger: Put your gratitude in writing. Maybe a text message or an email is all you can commit to — and that’s OK. But the occasional handwritten thank-you note (even if it’s short) carries so much more weight, if only because it means you managed to locate a stamp and someone’s actual address.
Whatever the medium, take a moment once per week to tell someone — whether it’s your spouse or baby-sitter — that you appreciate them. Don’t overthink it: No one’s judging your literary prowess. And don’t be afraid to occasionally direct the note to yourself. Being kind to ourselves is often the first step in showing it to others.

More from my fellow intrepid and brave artists attempting the 30 paintings in 30 days here

This painting was inspired by recent documentaries on the Amazon rainforest. Although I paint a lot of pets, I'm always afraid to paint people. When I get over my fear I love the process. Portraits take on a life of their own. A deep connection is created between the subject and the artist. A point is reached when suddenly the painting comes to life. Breathing life into inanimate paint on your canvas is a very exciting experience.

While creating this Shaman I had the feeling that he was encouraging my work. The portrait went through many stages and sat unfinished in my studio at the stage below for some months. I was pleased that I was able to finish it today and add it to the list of my 30 paintings in 30 days.

As I look at the painting in front of me I feel the expression and eyes look different in the image. The expression also changes depending on how large the image is which is quite strange. It is also not apparent in this image that the Shaman is looking straight out of the painting at the viewer. It's possible that this is caused by the Mona Lisa sfumato effect I built in to the sides of the mouth and eyes. It is certainly a very magical painting. There is a fair bit of texture in the feathers created with Liquitex Heavy Gel Gloss. I've also varied the thickness of the paint, being thin and bright in some areas and thick and rich in others. I'm quite proud of the result.
