This sweet painting is part of a series with figures that I would like to spend more time creating. Commissions always welcome. I would love to do some portraits in landscape like this.
I was told that the customer was ecstatic about her purchase and interested in several more of my paintings, so I hope she does return to the gallery. I think this painting really benefited from having a standard mat because the unusual shape would leave people wondering how to frame it. With the standard 8" x 10" mat it makes the choices so much easier.
This is one of my small experimental pieces. He's a cheeky little chappie don't you think? He is on exhibition but if you love him, contact me and I'll check to ensure he's still available. I think he'll fly the nest soon, so don't dilly dally.
I attended the opening of "Bring out your best" KAG Members Exhibition yesterday. I must say that I was very impressed by the attention to detail. The nibblies were delicious, the music unique and the hosts attentive and gracious. It certainly makes me proud to be a member.
This is the first year that Kelowna Art Gallery has created a catalog of their members exhibition and I think they've done an amazing job. Click on the link below to see over 70 high quality recent works.
The compilers made the extra effort of re-imaging each painting for the catalog, rather than using the one submitted by the artist. Before I delivered BEYOND THE STARS to the gallery I couldn't resist making a few adjustments and there was no time to document the changes, so I am pleased to have an excellent professional image of the adjusted painting.
Can you spot the changes?
To my knowledge this is the first time my work has been included in a digital catalog so it feels like I have achieved something special. Although my painting is on the back wall of the exhibition, it is in a great position facing the door. You can see it in the first image of the digital catalog, right next to the Directors Forward.
Isn't she sweet? A little girl with a dandelion clock. When I was a child I remember many happy hours watching the seeds float away on the wind.
STORAGE SOLUTION
Artists always seem to have a challenge with storing their inventory. The usual solution is to slide it under the bed, but that space only holds a certain amount. Paintings and frames can get damaged easily if they aren't stored properly and it is often hard to find a particular piece. I've tried many solutions for tracking and storage, but this time I think I've hit on the best solution.
For the last month I've been busy mounting each of my small paintings in mats or on archival board. Each mat has a backing board and to this I have attached a short bio with my image. These are then placed in a close fitting clear archival bag and it is taped shut. Now the painting is protected and easy to view or mount. I love my new 8" x 10" mat packs because they are so practical.
I store my packaged paintings in banker boxes; the ones with the separate lids are strongest and easy to stack and store. When I need to restock a gallery, display my work for a client, organize a show or submission, it is all very simple. I store each size in a different box so they are easy to locate. The paintings can be flipped through quickly and I don't have to hunt through piles of work or worry about keeping them in numerical order because they are easy to see through the bag.
So the painting above is ready to ship. All I have to do is place some corrugated cardboard front and back and slip it into an envelope. Eh voila! Again it is easy to pop into exhibition frames, then remove and repackage after the show.

Daumier was born in Marseille to Jean-Baptiste Louis Daumier and Cécile Catherine Philippe. His father was a glazier whose literary aspirations led him to Paris in 1814, seeking to be published as a poet.
In 1816 the young Daumier and his mother followed Jean-Baptiste to
Paris. Daumier showed an inclination to
the artistic profession, which his father tried to check by
placing him as an errand boy to a huissier and then a bookseller.
In 1822 he became protégé to artist and archaeologist Alexandre Lenoir, a friend of Daumier's father. The following year Daumier entered the Académie Suisse.
Daumier made his first attempts at lithography while working for a lithographer and publisher named Belliard. Having mastered the technique, Daumier produced plates for music publishers, and advertisements. This was followed by anonymous work for publishers emulating the style of Charlet
His most well known work today is probably an illustration of Don Quixote.
My painting today is a sweet child exploring nature. This is painted on Strathmore Windpower and is a raw edge painting allowing it to be mounted on top of mat board.

I was going to skip blogging today, but I just thought of a wonderful blog theme for the month of February and I can't wait to get started. As many of you know, I run a Facebook group called GET YOUR ART OUT THERE. This is a group where artists serious about marketing their art can help each other by sharing ideas. It can be calls for submission, exhibitions, classes, ideas, asking for feedback on a particular challenge you're having, in fact anything that helps the community as a whole. I post quite a lot of useful links and tips on this group, but with the changes on Facebook, that it is no longer getting to the right demographic. I also post a blog almost daily which sometimes also shares the tips I post on or get from GYAOT and sometimes just shows my latest work. I'm spending way too much time duplicating my efforts in this way. So for the month of February I'm going to share tips and tricks, useful websites and ideas right here on my blog rather than GYAOT. by Sea Dean Mixed Media 24" x 24 x 1.5" Deep Gallery Wrap Canvas I have a friend Fiona Neal, that does the most stunning abstract paintings that just glow with life. Today I took FI's intuitive painting class with 8 other lucky participants. She talked for an hour on her theories, methods and motivations and then we painted for an hour, listening to our inner voice.
Our painting was supposed to be cathartic and non representational, but my inner voice was singing and my splashes and blobs started to take on form. I asked if this was OK and was advised just to have fun, so I did. This is the result. I don't often paint large because of the expense and storage while they wait to find their patron, but I love it when I do. This was a blast. I see lots of things here - fluffy clouds on a summers day, sun, flowers, happy insects buzzing, the perfume of fresh air. What do you see? If you're having trouble try turning it around a different way and squinting.

I studied Art History in England, so I'm my knowledge of artists outside Europe is limited. Of course I had heard the name and seen some of the seascapes, but until you make the effort to study an artist in paint, you don't seem to put the two together.
I love the light in this little excerpt from one of Winslow's water colours. It is created with light naples yellow and warm blue, with quite deep shadows in the foreground, thrown by the backlight of the sun. This little boy was so whimsical and I'm curious what his companions are doing. To me it looks like they may be painting plein air, which would be very challenging in a boat.
This may be a little over the top, but this wan't painted in my studio, I had no lamp and it was getting dark. I had my paintbrush in one hand and a Sylvania Dot iT in the other and painted till I was done. Then I wanted to blog a photo of my crazy idea. Trouble is that I needed another hand because I also had to hold the camera. You get the idea. :)
Winslow Homer was born February 24, 1836 Boston, Massachusetts. He came from a long line of New Englanders. It is not surprising therefore that he is best known for his nautical subjects. He started out as an illustrator and moved to landscape and seascape painting mainly in water-colour. He was also a printmaker. In 1859 he opened a gallery in New York City but it wasn't a wild success.
Winslow produced a lot of work for Harper's Weekly and was hired for some major work illustrating the civil war. After the war his work became far more nostalgic, focusing on women and children. He was not very successful during his lifetime, and many of his paintings took years to sell. During the rough times he was supported by his mother and brother Charles.

The painting was difficult to photograph because of the irridescent paint on the grass, sun's rays and hearts. The shiny parts and the orangy brown pieces are all copper gold, which shines according to the amount of light.
I love this happy little miniature and I hope you do too.

I really feel a sense of achievement with this painting. The challenge this month on PAINT MY PHOTO is to choose two photos posted by members and combine them. One has to be a panoramic landscape and the second, a person.
The landscape below has been finished and waiting for the figure for over a week. If you regularly read my blog you know I have a horror of formula painting and the "chocolate box" look. I dislike incidental figures plonked into the sweet spot just to satisfy compositional elements. I love my initial painting below just the way it is, so you can imagine, I had a terrible time getting over "spoiling it".
EMPTY LANDSCAPE BEFORE PLACING THE FIGURE
For over a week I've searched through hundred of photos trying to find just the right figure. I liked many by the ocean which of course didn't look right. There was a man playing golf, but he was putting and I felt this landscape needed a strong drive. Then there was the cliche man walking his dog Ug! I found hikers, cute children and all kinds of other figures but nothing seemed right. This morning I was determined to complete the challenge and settled for a leaping dancer. I sat down to paint and while I was getting ready, another photo I had selected caught my eye, it was one chosen for my portrait series and was taken close up.
It occurred to me that my problem was that none of the selections were interesting enough and I'm a dynamic kinda gal. So this sweet little child with her dandelion clock became my figure and I'm so pleased I persevered. This is probably the first time that I have placed something in the foreground and thought the finished result an improvement on the background! Yay, what a great learning experience. I totally fell in love with this photo of a little girl called Jahara on Paint my Photo. I love portrait painting and I don't often get a chance to practice, so here she is. I hope she never plucks those wonderful eyebrows.

City Mouse has gone to the city and is now a successful businessman. He sports lovely white gloves, spats, a top hat, umbrella and a gold pocket watch. He has just taken his watch out of his pocket to check the time because he´s running late. A street lamp lights his way as he scurries home. I saw the photo Maria posted on her blog and just knew I had to paint this lovely little girl dreaming of being a beautiful ballerina.
Ballet is hard! I went to a few lessons when I was very small and I hated it! I grew up to love dancing though, and for a while it became a big part of my life. This would be a lovely gift for a little girl who dreams big.
