SUN AFTER RAIN

SUN AFTER RAIN II
PROFESSIONAL ACRYLIC PAINTING BY SEA DEAN
8" x 8" x 5/8" Gallery Wrap Canvas

To view my Gallery or purchase this painting please visit Daily Paintworks. Larger originals or prints may be available by contacting me.

This lovely bright painting started life as part of a triptych, but when I was reviewing my stock, I realized it was so much nicer on it's own. Because this painting is on 5/8" canvas with painted sides, it can either be mounted in a floating frame, an ordinary frame, or be displayed as is.

TREE LINE by Sea Dean in Philips Long Life soft light
I had fun here working with warm colours in the foreground. It's a challenge making trees look natural, but one of the secrets is in spacing. In this painting they are in a line, so it was even more crucial to make them uneven in height and growth pattern. This also makes the painting more interesting to view.

Some paintings look quite different in daylight. This painting was finished at night and as I'm not in my studio I photographed it in the regular room light, a long life Philips soft light. What a difference when I photographed it in daylight.

I also find that when I show my work in a gallery, it looks quite different to when I hang it at home. It's good to be aware of this and if you are buying a painting, think about what kind of light you will generally view it under. A low light dining room bulb will make the painting appear quite different to bright daylight streaming into an office.

I enjoy this painting both ways, and it adds a different dimension to a painting in your home.

FAMOUS ARTISTS BIRTHDAY - ALFRED SISLEY - IMPRESSIONIST

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2e/Meadow%2C_Alfred_Sisley%2C_1875.jpg
MEADOW - ALFRED SISLEY - 1875

Today I begin a new series of blogs based on famous Artists. Each blog will co-incide with an important date in the Artist's life, usually their birthday.

As many of you know, I teach a class called PAINT A MASTERPIECE, where I teach students how to create a masterpiece in just one day. The classes are for those who have never painted before or Artists that have never seen success with Acrylics. During the class we copy and complete a master work chosen by the class. I have seen amazing work and many happy students surprised at what is possible in such a short time.

Copying masterpieces seems to have fallen out of favour in recent years, but for centuries it was standard practice for those who studied art. I suggest that if you are an Artist or dream of painting, use this series to examine each master work and paint all or part of it. I guarantee that you will learn a lot.

I haven't painted MEADOW, but I spent some time studying the brush strokes and composition. The fascinating thing is that so many rules were broken but they are offset by the skillful placement of colour, object or brushstroke. Although the painting appears to be a simple scene, it when you study it, you can see it is actually highly complex. Even though it has a loose, Plein Air, impressionist style, it must have taken quite some time to paint.

For instance take the lady in the hat ... she is placed almost in the center of the fence facing out of the painting, but the dark mass of the tree placed in front of her stops your eye continuing out of the painting and the uneven fence adds interest. The fence dwarfs the figure but doesn't dominate because the blue of her cape is more intense than the muted colour of the fence. I could go on, but I would prefer you have a chance to explore on your own.

I often paint wild flowers but I really love the kind that have big centers like cone flowers and teasels. This photo caught my attention because of the lovely halo of orangy yellow on the cone.

MOONLIT MEADOW ACEO and "Do what is simple for you"

"Recently a friend of mine gave me a book about artists and their studios. One artist's advice was to do what was simple for you. I thought that was brilliant. I think at times we complicate things." - Artist Alice S Helwig

SCAN OF PAINTING WITH NO VIOLET SHINE
This was inspired by a photo posted by Amy Mya on PAINT MY PHOTO. Of course my painting is merely an adaptation, but this is sometimes how I inspire myself to pick up the brush. I browse my reference photo, selecting ones which call to me. I search for different subjects on the internet, and most recently I browse through, PAINT MY PHOTO, which is a website where photographers post their work and Artists may use them as a guide for their painting. What a wonderful idea for collaboration.

I am quite an emotional being (what artist isn't?) and what comes easily to me is to work with my emotions. Commissions are very challenging for me because I am usually presented with a photo of a pet or a scene that has a strong emotional connection for the client, but not necessarily me. I have to find something in that photo which works with my emotions, whether it is the colour, something about the composition, or even a story that the client tells me about it. Then I can pick up the brushes and paint.

Here is the original photo and my version. I particularly like the violet interference paint I used in this, you can barely see it here in the scan. It changes colour depending on the light and angle it is being viewed from and is very powerful. It seemed to me that it was perfect for a moonlit scene.

FEMALE BEAUTY BUTTERFLY and GRATITUDE ACEO

My newest painting, a butterfly ACEO with dynamic surround. A subtle but stunning colour combination of umber, light yellow and turquoise with pale violet dots. This painting has fascinating interference gold highlights that catch the light unexpectedly but is difficult to photograph accurately. The pale yellow outer edge of the wings has subtle flashes which make it look as if it is moving. I have tried a scan and several photos, but just can´t seem to get it. Interference paint is much more subtle than the bronze seen below on GRATITUDE, but both are beautiful.

Feedback is so important that I´m posting an unsold painting on this blog and in the Daily Paintworks `CRITIQUE ME` Challenge each day this month. Anyone can leave feedback by going to the challenge and clicking on the painting you would like to comment on. Don´t be shy, whether you´re a fellow Artist or an Art Lover, we would love to hear what you have to say.

GRATITUDE is the latest candidate for feedback. This is a very pretty painting with bronze highlights and lovely colours. It would make a wonderful gift, or at least that´s my opinion.

Sometimes a painting doesn´t sell because of lack of exposure or bad timing, but I´m open to hearing if there is anything else which needs attention. I´m tough, so please help me grow as an Artist by leaving a comment either below or at the DPW Challenge here.
