THE LAKE BRIDGE - DAY 6

THE LAKE BRIDGE
by Sea Dean
8" x 10" Birch Cradle
Acrylic
On Exhibit at Skyway Kelowna Airport

Painting our famous W. R. Bennett Bridge is my nemesis. That smooth elegant curve is ridiculously difficult to paint. I spent a few hours creating the painting and several days perfecting the bridge. Grrrr! But you can't paint this view without it.

It's also a challenge to paint a distant view of a town like this, how much detail do you put in and how much do you leave out? It is particularly important because most people that purchase my paintings at the airport are very familiar with the area and perhaps they even try to find their house in the scene. Good luck with that! This is an artist's impression painted with much artistic license.

ALL TIME MOST POPULAR BLOGS - CITY LIGHT

I had fun with this painting. I enjoyed using the fine point Golden liquid acrylic yesterday and resolved to use it again today, however, yesterday I did the point work first and then painted around and over it. This time I did the point work, painted around and over it and then added final point work. I think I like the second technique more.

I chose an unusual palette vaguely suggested by the Challenge photo on Daily Paintworks. I really went over the top adding Brilliant Blue and Cadmium Orange as well as a hint of purple and Pyrole Red. I wanted to make the trees lime green but the value wasn't dark enough, hence the change to Cadmium and Permanent/Brilliant Blue.

Working with Canson Arches Board is very different to canvas. It has a velvety surface which is absorbent but not in a detrimental way like canvas panel. The colours also seem to stay brighter than working with canvas. Because of the beautiful texture and the raised, glossy lines, I'm very tempted to leave these pieces unvarnished.

There are over 40 paintings in the Silent Auction. See them all here. Bid privately by clicking on the email button at the top of the page. Or leave a comment here. The auction runs till midnight PST 30th November 2015. Bidding is available online and at all my seasonal shows. I will try to keep you informed, but you may email me any time to ask for your current standing or increase your bid.

You will be contacted if you win. Auction prices are for pick up in Kelowna, BC. Canada. If you would like your painting shipped I'm happy to do so at cost. Cash or Paypal.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - EDWARD HOPPER - City Lights

NIGHTHAWKS by Edward Hopper
EDWARD HOPPER

Edward Hopper was born July 22, 1882. He was a prominent American Realist. While he was most popular for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient in watercolor and printmaking.

He specialized in sparse but fascinating glimpses of urban and rural American life. It's hard not to like his work. There is something haunting and mesmerizing about the simple lines and warm colours. Ordinary people going about their ordinary lives without romance or horror. People just like you and I.

Hopper had a long and productive life, passing away May 15, 1967

CITY LIGHTS

As much as I would love to paint like him, I don't think there is anything similar to Hoppers in my work. This Cityscape at least shows contemporary American Life in warm afternoon light. I like this painting a lot. It is painted in watery acrylics and ink on Canson Arches board. Available at Daily Paintworks.

URBA Art in Empty Spaces Exhibition on view in Rutland, Kelowna, BC, Canada
10 April - 20 November 2015
Closing Event and Auction 26 November

This painting is compiled from a series of historical photographs of the area. The Airfield was situated in Rutland at Belgo and was the main airfield before Ellison was built.

The pageant was an adventure for the pilot and the people that came to view the planes or even pay for a ride. It was also a clever marketing scheme to advertise the burgeoning air industry in Canada and show the world how advanced and modern the country was.

The plane is a Gypsy Moth owned by John Blakeney and registered to Radium Hot Springs Flying Service with Pilot LL Dunsmore. It was an older plane at the time, being built in 1915 and operated during WWI. There were many brand new planes at the pageant including ones on their maiden flights.

The S.S. Sicamous came into service in 1914 and the route was abolished in 1951. The stern wheeler was used on Okanagan Lake to deliver passengers, cargo, machinery, fruit, and mail. The SS Sicamous would depart from Penticton every morning and arrive at Okanagan Landing by noon before returning to Penticton. There were 14 scheduled stops but more stops were made on request. The ship is now on display at the lake edge in Penticton, B.C. Canada.

And this is the Studio Gallery I spoke of yesterday. Many artists imagine a place like this to work, exhibit and hold classes. This lucky person in Florence Italy achieved their dream. I can't resist going inside. How about you?
