FAMOUS ARTISTS BIRTHDAY - MARY CASSATT - AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST

MARY CASSATT

Mary Cassatt was born May 22, 1844 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She had French ancestry, so after studying at the Pennsylvania Academy, she moved to France and studied with the Parisian masters. In 1868 her work was accepted at the Salon in Paris under her pseudonym Mary Stevenson.

Mary Cassatt was a rare female artist and gave a feminine view on the subject of motherhood and family. Most young women were schooled in drawing and water colours, but gave it up when they married to manage the household. Marys parents objected to her becoming both an artist and "bohemian" but she ignored their wishes.

On the outbreak of the Franco/Prussian war, she was forced to return to her parents home, but her father refused to pay for anything related to her art. She tried to sell her paintings in New York and Chicago where most of her work was destroyed in a fire. She earned the money to return to France with a commission from the Archbishop of Pennsylvania. She was accepted in the Paris Salon of 1872, 1873 and 1874.

Mary Cassat admired Degas and eventually they became friends. He introduced her to the Impressionists and she exhibited with them In 1879, 1880, 1881, 1886. The break in 1881 was caused by having to return home and set aside her art to care for her mother and sister. She later developed a style that was influenced by the popular Japanese prints of the day.

In 1912 her eyesight began to fail and she turned her attention to encouraging young female artists. She died at Chateau Beaufresne, Beauvais, France 19 June 1926.

For more art by Mary Cassatt click here.
For the wiki biography click here.

I suspect that the work in my catalogue most like Mary Cassat is the one below.  It is a small painting with great charm. The original is now sold and available in print.

DOTTY DRESS - DAILY PAINTWORKS CHALLENGE - SILENT AUCTION

I've been chosen to host a Daily Painting Challenge this week.

"This challenge is all about frills and frippery. This is the time of year when every little girl gets a special dress to wear for family gatherings. I envision red velvet, white stockings and black patent shoes. Even the big girls are planning what they will wear for Thanksgiving and the holiday season. Have you been shopping for yours yet?

This week paint a special party dress real or imaginary. This could be something you've seen in a shop window, in your closet or on your favorite niece. Make it as pretty as you can. Add colour, collage, sparkles or whatever takes your fancy. For inspiration go to http://www.morguefile.com/ and search for dress, party, fashion etc.

For artists of the male sex you can either paint something girly or a very smart suit, waistcoat, tie etc. Paint that outfit you know your wife or girlfriend would love to see you in. Let's do it proud."

Anyone can enter a Daily Paintworks challenge. There is no fee.
If you want to join the fun and get some free advertising, click here to submit your painting.

Postcard by Eric Bruth

This lovely postcard design is from Eric Bruth in Paris, France. How lucky I am to get a postcard from Paris during Kat Sloma's project. I love it. I would like to view the original piece because it seems to have some unusual textures that a print doesn't show well. You can see more of Eric's art here.

I wanted to find something in my work that blended with Eric's style and BLUE DOLL seemed to fit well. It is a painting of a 30" fashion doll in the Metropolitan Museum in New York, designed by Parisian fashion designer, Elsa Schiaparelli. At exhibitions visitors seem to respond to this painting. There is something about the elegance of the "Belle Epoque" era and the Parisian flavour that appeals the them. This costume is from 1906.

I think this lady would love Eric's flowers don't you?

I was on the hanging committee, so I was lucky to have a preview. The quality of the members exhibition is very high this year and there are many pieces I would love to own.

Wouldn't you know it! After I had been working, on and off for weeks, on a submission due today, I woke up this morning to snow. Yuk! This is part of the painting, as yet untitled (La vie en Rose?), which I'll share in it's full glory when I find out if I make it through the jury. I love it of course but juries do tend to have a mind of their own. Notification is at the beginning of next week and the exhibition opens on Wednesday.

This was exciting to paint because I've always admired the dexterity of the old masters when they paint the folds and details in the lavish court dress of previous centuries. this was a study in red satin which I really enjoyed painting. Perhaps soon I'll be brave enough to try gold and pearl jewellery and tapestry.

The snow melted by the way, but it was windy and cold this afternoon, which is quite different to 15 Celcius a few days ago. I suppose that my prediction that spring had come early was wrong.

VALUE and COLOUR - FRIEND or FOE?

It will be no surprise that I love colour. Vibrant reds, soft lilacs, zingy oranges and velvety blues, I love them all. The challenge of a colourist is that you sometimes forget that it is value which builds a composition and value and colour are often confused.

"Value does all the work but Color gets the glory"

Not everyone sees colour the same way: Generally females are able to distinguish more subtlety and males are more likely to be colour blind. This discussion came up in class the other day and it got me thinking that perhaps women tend to choose colour based on it's own merit and men can more easily distinguish values. Therefore, female artists must be more vigilant in their use of colour and value.

If you are struggling to make sales, it is very likely your use of value and composition is getting in the way. It's always a good ideas to review your art sales periodically and the next time you do, check your sales against your use of compostional value. You will be amazed. Henri Matisse was a master of this.

Some tricks to seeing value are

1. Take a photo of your painting and use an app to change colour to black and white. Or take two photos, one in colour and one in black and white.
2. Put your painting on an easel or hang it on the wall, step back and squint.
3. Hold your painting up to a mirror.

A great exercise is to create a table mixing white through to black in ten even steps along the top of a sheet of paper. Then place each colour or mix you use regularly on a palette and by squinting try to select the grey in your chart closest to the value of the colour. Paint a swatch of that colour under the most appropriate column. Yellow will be close to white in value and Ultramarine or Dioxazine Purple will be near black.

For acrylic painters the colour will darken as it dries and you may need to switch to another column or guess how much you think the paint will darken as it dries. Darks darken two or three values, whereas lights shift less or sometimes get lighter in the case of mixes with a lot of titanium white. Watercolour quite often lightens in value as it dries and oil stays more or less the same.

If you do this exercise I would be interested in your findings and if you come to any startling realizations. Please leave a comment here.

This is a large piece for Women's empowerment exhibition. It will be on show in Kelowna, BC, Canada till the March.

From the beginning I had a clear vision for the submission, however, when I started to plan, my red full length clothed female turned in to a violet and blue half length nude. As an added surprise I discovered that it can hang either way. I love the result and I think it would look wonderful in my entrance hall if it doesn't sell during the exhibition.

The exhibition is in three places until March 5th

Matisse was a painter that excelled at the female form. With his graphic style and darkly outlined forms, he was far ahead of his time. Click on the links to see more of his work and read about his life.

Matisse lived a long and highly productive life. When he was no longer able to paint he developed a type of collage that astounded the public. He was French, and like most artists of his time he spent time in Paris. He died in Nice, France,  3 November 1954

Bid on my exclusive limited time SILENT AUCTIONS here

I took the plunge and entered "Beautiful Eyes" into the Daily Paintworks monthly contest. There is a cost for most online contests, but sometimes it's worth the publicity even if you don't win. I could win $500 which would be extremely handy right now, or I could be one of the 15 artists selected for special recognition on the site for a whole month which would be great too. Another possibility is that someone sees the painting, which has already sold, and commissions something similar.

If you have time, please hop on over to this link and leave a comment on the painting. I always think this helps gain more visibility on the site. http://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/sea-dean/cat--13108-beautiful-eyes-oswoa-postcard-series/139398

I would also be interested in what you think is a good size for this work. The original was a 4" x 6" trial for a larger painting, but I've never been able to decide on a good size to make it. I reckon it would be spectacular in a very modern environment absolutely huge like a billboard. The "eyes of T. J. Eckleburg" from Scott Fitzgerald's THE GREAT GATSBY come to mind. However, that would severely limit the market, because how many people have a 20 foot high space in which to put it? In a regular sized home I would think anything over 20" x 30" would be overpowering. Or should it be about 8" x 12" which would work great in a powder room or boudoir? Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

TIP:- Enter a few online contests and learn the process. It could pay off big-time.

This painting has already had an eventful life before the paint was dry. Let me explain. I was working on another painting for submission to the Art Walk Theme Exhibition in Lake Country Art Gallery, but I just wasn't happy with the way it was coming together. Just before midnight, the day before final submission I ditched the first painting and started on another and WALKING IN PARIS was born.

The painting was due at the Gallery at 4pm and I was just finishing up the edges at 3pm when the fire alarm went off. I quickly grabbed the wet painting and my door keys and headed down the stairs. This was the first fire alarm in my new place and I haven't got my emergency routine sorted yet. I forgot my laptop, which is the most precious thing I own. About half way down the stairs I realized that I should have taken my car keys and driven straight to the Gallery, regardless of my condo being up in flames!

Luckily the alarm stopped soon after getting to the garden and the painting and I headed back upstairs to grab my car keys. Now it was 3:30pm, the painting wasn't catalogued, signed, photographed or even dry and I swear we hit every red light between my studio to the gallery. Friday afternoon plus holiday traffic was thick and I suffered some anxious moments before skidding into the gallery, wet painting in hand at 3:57pm.

In spite of all the drama, I think this painting has a lovely aura about it. Somewhat reminiscent of Edward Hopper don't you think? I have such a passion for figurative work and every time I finish one of these paintings I wonder why I don't do more. This is going to be a hard one to part with.

A well turned out mademoiselle and her little dog sharing a walk in the afternoon sun is a common sight in Paris. Wish I was there now strolling the Luxembourg Gardens. Now that would be A STEP FORWARD.

PRETTY HIGH - Shoe Heaven - DAY TWO

PRETTY HIGH - Mixed Media 6" x 6" Wrap Canvas

PRETTY HIGH
Miniature Masterpiece - Shoe Heaven
Original Painting by Sea Dean
6” x 6” Gallery Wrap Canvas
Professional Acrylic with UV Protection

Purchase via Daily Paintworks

This was a difficult challenge because there were many angles that had to be just right, the front of the foot, the placement of the heel, the height of the anklet etc. I easily chose turquoise/teal for the leather and rose pink for the flowers, but when it came to creating a background it took a while to decide on something simple, interesting enough to grab attention, yet not too busy to distract from the main focus. I settled for a multi layered organdy drape which is much prettier in real life.

My style continues to develop, and I find myself often drawn to mixing smooth with impasto. I also love mixed media and will continue to work with galleries in understanding that this is valid form of fine art, not just a simple craft. For this painting I chose a 3 dimensional style of flower created with soft gel with the shoe smooth and unobtrusive. The final touch is the applied silk flower which really adds pop. I like the effect. I would describe the colour of the flower as true rose pink. It is a warm medium shade. Some monitors might make it appear brighter as with any reddish tones.

This has always been a head turner and the star of my collection since the day it was first exhibited. I am currently setting up a new studio and need funds, so I am prepared to part with this special piece on a first come first served basis.

I have two options for this original art work currently available. Please contact me to purchase.

1. Professionally framed (the framing cost over $200)
2. Ready to frame but framing advised

The mixed media piece is currently in a professional custom made 2" simple black wood exhibition frame. I do not recommend hanging unframed as the edge is unfinished but I could sell without.

I am happy to lay away with a $250 deposit.
Three more installments of $250 for the unframed version or
Four more installments of $250 for the custom framed version.

If you love it, as I do, lets work something out.

THE BEST OF PRE-2011

Most of the work I produced prior to 2011, is in my private collection and that of members of my family. I worked in a variety of media including oil, watercolour, print, jewellery, pottery, papier mache, metal, installation, pen and ink, graphite etc. but it wasn't until 2011 that I took a serious interest in acrylic painting which is my current choice.

Although my oil paintings are lovely, in my opinion this is the best piece that I created prior to 2011. It took many weeks design and construction and is a riveting piece worthy of any international exhibition. It The work appears fragile, but that is the secret substrate which took a lot of experimentation to master.

Next Friday stay tuned for my 2011 Choice.

BLUE DOLL - EXHIBITION WORK

BLUE DOLL
Original Painting by Sea Dean

I love RED DOLL from yesterday, but I think I love BLUE DOLL more. She is a bit more subdued, but nevertheless does sport some cadmium orange.  There is also a hint of violet interference, now you see it now you don't paint around the feathers and petticoat which is quite beautiful.

I'm not sure how this image looks on your screen but it seems a bit dull on mine. The original painting has cadmium orange and cobalt, so it's certainly not dull in real life.

I hope you enjoy this painting as much as I enjoyed creating it.

I'm busy creating quite a few larger paintings in advance of some exhibitions coming up in the fall. I like this so much that I'm not sure it will make it off my wall.

This design has been running through my mind for several years, then today I saw a doll in the Metropolitan Museum collection and was inspired to put brush to canvas. Apparently in 1947 there was a fund raising effort in the USA to help the French recover after the second world war and they were so grateful that they donated a collection of fashion dolls in return. The one that inspired me was from my favourite fashion era in 1906 and it was designed by Elsa Schiaparelli.

I'm not sure how this image looks on your screen but it seems a bit dull on mine. The original painting has cadmium yellow and red, so it's certainly not dull in real life.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed creating it.

DOTTY DRESS - Fashion of the 50s

DOTTY DRESS
Original Painting by Sea Dean
7" x 5" Canvas Panel

Painting a dotty dress has been on my mind for some time, so today I finally got around to it. This is a sort of 50's style dress pulled from my imagination. I would love to do a series on the era, because it was such a feminine period. Back then fashion seemed to have a lighthearted nature that appears missing in modern fashion.

Sex in the City fashion was mainly inspired by the post war period. It was the era of tight waists and frothy dresses, large patterns, crinoline petticoats and perfect hair. In the 50's the man of the house made the decisions, the wife's place was in the home and only radical women  like Katharine Hepburn wore pants and dreamed of working in a typing pool.

ANGEL FACE - MINI MASTER SERIES - FAMOUS ARTISTS BIRTHDAY - LEONARDO DA VINCI - BLOOD MOON ECLIPSE - DPW PICK OF THE DAY

Homage to Famous Artists on their birthday

Leonardo is famous for his subtle gradations, especially around the corners of the mouth and eyes, making his subject appear alive. When I saw this drawing of a young woman (probably a study for the madonna), I just knew I had to try and capture her sweet smile. It's quite intimidating to copy the great master, but I learned a lot. Perhaps one day I will attempt the Mona Lisa.

Not only is it the most famous Master's birthday, but there is a BLOOD MOON lunar eclipse tonight. See about the lunar eclipse here.
( a few details to adjust on the angel, but I didn't want to miss publishing time)

LEONARDO DA VINCI

Born 15 April 1452, Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian Renaissance polymath: painter, sculptor, architect, musician, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist, and writer. (And I think my talents are rather scattered). Born out of wedlock to a notary, Piero da Vinci and a peasant woman, Caterina, in Vinci region of Florence, Leonardo was educated in the studio of the renowned Florentine painter, Verrocchio. Much of his earlier working life was spent in service to Ludovico il Moro in Milan. He later worked in Rome, Bologna and Venice and he spent his last years in France at the home given him by King Francis I who was in awe of the old master.

His genius, perhaps more than that of any other figure, epitomized the Renaissance ideal. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype of the Renaissance Man, a man of "unquenchable curiosity" and "feverishly inventive imagination". He is widely considered to be one of the greatest painters of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived.

Leonardo is revered for his technological ingenuity. He conceptualized flying machines, a tank, concentrated solar power, an adding machine, and the double hull, also outlining a rudimentary theory of plate tectonics. Relatively few of his designs were constructed or were even feasible during his lifetime, but some of his smaller inventions, such as an automated bobbin winder and a machine for testing the tensile strength of wire, entered the world of manufacturing unheralded. He made important discoveries in anatomy, civil engineering, optics, and hydrodynamics, but he did not publish his findings and they had no direct influence on later science.

Among his works, the Mona Lisa is the most famous and most parodied portrait and The Last Supper the most reproduced religious painting of all time, with their fame approached only by Michelangelo's The Creation of Adam. Leonardo's drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon, being reproduced on items as varied as the euro coin, textbooks, and T-shirts. Only fifteen of his paintings survive because of his constant and frequently disastrous, experimentation with new techniques and his chronic procrastination. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams and his thoughts on the nature of painting, compose a contribution to later generations of artists rivaled only by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo.

According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and "his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote". Marco Rosci states that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical and the empirical methods he employed were not mysterious, merely unusual for his time.

He died 2 May 1519.

My submission for the sadly cancelled show "Shall I wear a Red Yes". The subject is vaguely reminiscent of a Star Trek Orion Slave Girl with her blue/green skin and sparkly underwear. She is exotic, seductive and adds quite a presence to a modern home.

The varied reds in the background don't photograph well; they have much more variation from orange to magenta with some purple. The triangle thong is coated in copper iridescent paint, with applied crochet work and crystals.

The show asked that the submission conformed to an excerpt from MOLLY BLOOM's soliloquy in James Joyce Ulysses  "Shall I wear a red yes".

Yes I will YES (showing variation in background)
"...I was a Flower of the mountain yes when I put the rose in my hair like the Andalusian girls used or shall I wear a red yes and how he kissed me under the Moorish Wall and I thought well as well him as another and then I asked him with my eyes to ask again yes and then he asked me would I yes to say yes my mountain flower and first I put my arms around him yes and drew him down to me so he could feel my breasts all perfume yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes. BERTHE MORISOT
PORTRAIT OF BERTHE MORISOT BY MANET

Born 14 January 1841 at Bourges, France.

Berthe and her sister, Edma Morisot, both chose the life of an artist. This was fairly rare for a female at the time because it was unusual for women to work outside the traditional female rolse.  The sisters studied at the Barbizon School under influential landscape and figure painter Camille Corot. Corot was well connected and introduced them to many top artists and teachers. He was one of the first artists to move out of the studio, into the countryside and became a forefather of plein air painting.

Berthe worked alongside Édouard Manet and married his younger brother Eugène. Being part of Manet's family meant that she became part of the early Impressionist group.

In 1864 Berthe exhibited at the Paris Salon which was the official, annual exhibition of the Académie des beaux-arts. Her work was selected for six subsequent Salons.

In 1874, she showed nine works in the first Impressionist exhibition, with Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Alfred Sisley. She went on to take part in all but the 1879 exhibition. Berthe was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt.

She died in Paris in 1895
