This painting is on show in the annual Intergenerational Exhibition - Art Through the Ages. The Exhibition opens on Wednesday at Lake Country Art Gallery, Lake Country, B.C. Canada, my local stomping ground. This is the third time I've taken part in the Intergenerational and each year I stretch myself out of my comfort zone and collaborate with someone from another generation. This year is no exception.

The basis for Grapes with Benefits was a painting of grapes spontaneously gifted to me by Daniel Dearborn, a local artist who I much admire. I tried to find somewhere to hang the painting in my home, but as this is a location where clients often come shopping for a new art work, I couldn't find anywhere to put it. It was of course not for sale and not by me. I spoke to Daniel about this predicament and asked if I could make some additions and enter it into "Art Through the Ages". Cheeky, I know, but he agreed as long as I took his signature off the piece, which I have done. I thought it only fair that I should leave my signature off as well.

It should be pretty clear where Daniel left off and I began. His work is all the nice impressionist, flowy grapes and leaves; my bit is the wine glass. I hardly touched Daniels work and managed to slip the glass into a space between some impasto grapes. It was a huge challenge to match the colours Daniel had used and integrate the glass into the scene. It's easy to think that glass is transparent and if you add a few bits of white as reflections you're done. The glass actually took me two days to get right. My biggest mistake was making it lighter to depict shine, when actually I needed to darken most areas. Then I needed to add colour to the white wine, which is more golden than water.

I don't think I will embarrass Daniel too much and I will be quite proud to see it hanging in the exhibition.

This painting is for the LCAG annual Intergenerational Exhibition - Art Through the Ages. The Exhibition opens on Wednesday at Lake Country Art Gallery, Lake Country, B.C. Canada, my local stomping ground. This is the third time I've taken part in the Intergenerational and each year I stretch myself out of my comfort zone and collaborate with someone from another generation. This year is no exception.

This painting follows a small sketch painted at Opus OPC last Sunday. I've toned down the colors, using mainly Prussian Blue, Yellow Green and various shades of off white. I used metallic white impasto to outline the sails where the sun hits the edges.

After OPC I wanted to do a series of paintings based on the well known sculpture by R. Dow Reid. Apparently it is one of the most painted pieces of public art in Kelowna, but I thought one should ask the artist's permission. Dow Reid is 83 years old, but still very much alive, so I attempted contact. So far with no luck, but I will keep trying.

This painting addresses the loosest interpretation of the theme. Part of the criteria states 

"two or more people having different roles in the making of a single piece of artwork - for example: one person models, the other draws/paints model; one person tells a story and/or provides some kind of inspiration, the other illustrates it/turns it into art"

 

I painted the background first, and when I started on the sculpture I felt as if Dow Reids hands were guiding me with the smooth sweeping lines and whispering corrections in my ear. I'm curious if I painted some of his other works if I would experience the same thing.


Addressing the copyright issue for Public Art
This painting falls into a grey area. If it was a photograph intended for sale and those sales would infringe of the original artists income, it would probably be in breech. With original art it somewhat depends on whether the painter has altered or enhanced the original piece, or added enough personal style. I think I have changed the original piece enough by adding the landscape, composition and colour.

This is part of my new sailing series. Our lake is perfect for sailing and this lucky person has a rather large cabin cruiser to play with. I'm green with envy.

I've started prepping for my next Paint a Masterpiece Class which takes place on Sunday. As usual it's shaping up to be a very interesting group. We are going to touch on texture which is so important to the  advanced acrylic artist. I think I can slide in one or two more students if you are interested. FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - WINSTON CHURCHILL THE ARTIST

The Tower of Katoubia Mosque by Winston Churchill - a gift to President Rooseveldt

30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965

Winston Churchill was much more than a famous statesman, he loved travel, especially with his extended family, and he loved to paint. His chosen medium was oil and some of his work is quite spectacular. His favourite locations were Morocco and the South of France as can be seen from the two paintings I have chosen.

It's very interesting to see the difference in the treatment of light between these two paintings. The south of France and Morocco are across the Mediterranean from each other, but the atmospheric conditions are so different that they shatter similar sunlight in different ways. The desert conditions create crisper and more colourful shadows, while the dramatic tree shadows in the second painting, although darker, are more grey. The clouds also give an idea of the weather with the French clouds being softer and the Moroccan ones sparse and outlined against the bluer sky.

ANCIENT HILL - Sea Dean

My painting of a vineyard near where I live, shows similar colour to those chosen by Winston Churchill for the south of France. Our climate however, is probably closer to that of Morocco and unless the land is irrigated our hills are covered in dry grassland and conifer trees as seen on the distant hill. Luckily we have plenty of water in our large local lakes, so irrigation is relatively simple.

This painting is on exhibit at the Lake Country Art Gallery Under 100 Exhibition. This is another creative Lake Country project in the vibrant art community of Lake Country, B.C., Canada. The 10th anniversary of the inception of Lake Country is 2 May 2015 and to celebrate we are creating a collaborative mural. The mural will be installed on the side of the Memorial Hall which is next to the Municipal Building. Unveiling is May 2nd of this year.

A painting was submitted to the municipality as a guide for the mural and depicts one of the many lakes in the area. The painting was divided into squares and each artist receives one 12" x 12" metal square with an assigned section of the above painting. The artist can paint anything they wish on the square as long as the colour matches the swatch.

I received a square which is part of the lilac hill in the background and above is my painting. The paint was dried out, thick, matte and gloopy so the detail I had planned wasn't going to work. I ended up deciding to score in a pattern. It may be difficult to see, but there is a sun or flower shape and in some of the petals I have scored faces which represent my family and other Lake Country residents. In each corner is an aspect of Lake Country, a skier, a water-skier, a tree and a mountain scene.

The painting is not for sale because it will be installed as part of the mural, but I'm always happy to take commissions for similar work. I'm also contemplating creating postcards for the gallery store. If you would like one let me know.

The square for the painting above is part of the lilac hill in the background of the mural below and you had to look hard to find anything other than dull lilac. The paint we were issued was matte, thick, dried out and difficult to paint with so there was not a lot of opportunity for painting detail. The panels will be coated before hanging, so it will have a gloss look when installed on the building.

This painting is not for sale because it will be installed as part of the mural project, but I'm contemplating making prints or a postcard for the gallery store, so If you would like one let me know. You could also commission a similar work in any size.

ANCIENT HILL is a lovely winery set above the rolling hills of the Okanagan. It is owned and run by the Kamphuys family who have steadily built the business over the last 24 years. They are a vital part of the community, supporting many charities, artists etc. and neighbours are constantly dropping by for a chat and to pick up some delicious wine for dinner. It's a very pleasant place to spend the afternoon.

Yesterday I was invited to paint at Ancient Hill Winery during the CARRS LANDING STUDIO TOUR. The winery is on the very edge of the tour and few arty types dropped by, but nevertheless the winery was bubbling with tasters and visitors enjoying the lovely covered picnic patio overlooking the valley.

The CARRS LANDING STUDIO TOUR spans two weekends, so I will be painting there again next weekend and hopefully I can round up a few more artist friends to accompany me, so drop on by with your picnic basket and enjoy this gorgeous location. The tour is both Saturday and Sunday and on Saturday afternoon a couple of musicians will be entertaining visitors.

This is the (almost) plein air painting that I completed at Ancient Hills Winery today, I didn't have good conditions to create an image of it, but you get the idea. Why I say almost plein air is because I painted it sitting at a picture window with the door open. I even have the mosquito bites to prove it.

I had several goals with this painting:-
1. To mimic the natural colour of the landscape
2. To soften my edges
3. To create a recognizable local view.
4. To limit my palette and work only with Atelier Interactive and Golden Open acrylics

The focal point is the tallest hill and the trees below it. In the painting they are better defined than in the image. It was a compositional choice to make the lower right corner uncluttered although it has heavy texture created with soft gel. The top line of the poplars point down towards the hill and there are subtle diagonal reflections throughout. Tomorrow I will probably add a touch more light coloured texture to the bottom right and touch up the skyline.

As for recognizable, the lady that owned the property behind the poplar trees was thrilled to see her land in a painting and the winery owner loved the colour palette.

The most important colour choice was the blue of the distant hills, which set the mood for the whole painting. Complementary cadmium orange was the perfect choice for under-painting and foreground, with more delicate mixes of flesh and various yellows as highlights. The sky is softly painted and slightly moody: Many visitors pointed out the sky as one of their favourite areas of the painting.

I did find the Golden Open and Atelier Interactive much easier to work with for plein air than Golden and Liquitex Heavy Body. The Atelier has less tendency to create hard lines and lift when painted over before dry. The Open feels a lot more like oil, with a soft buttery touch.The disadvantage to these two paints is that you have to wait longer before applying varnish, which would add vibrancy to the finished work.

I will place this for sale at Daily Paintworks and I hope to post a better image in the next couple of days.

OGOPOGOS LUNCH - Postcard and Fridge Magnet

OGOPOGO is our local lake monster. He is supposed to be related to the famous Loch Ness monster. Legends of the monster go back hundreds of years. He is supposed to live in a cave under Rattlesnake Island near the Mission in Kelowna.

Many years ago my young nephew visited me and during his trip he drew a lovely sketch of Ogopogo. I later copied it in paint and the painting was on exhibit in our local gallery. I love the eyes on the creatures dotted around the painting. All this came from the mind of an 8 year old, I just transposed it in paint. Amazing!

Painted for the Lake Country Art Gallery Inter-generational Exhibition. The submission calls for a collaboration between at least two people from different generations, so for this painting, I used a drawing made by my nephew Spencer, when he was about 8 years old.

In the Okanagan we have a lake monster similar to the Loch Ness monster, called OGOPOGO. The story must have captured Spencer's imagination on a visit, because he made a lovely drawing with so many fun aspects. I particularly like the eyes of the creatures, the hook and line of the fisherman in the boat above, the speed lines behind Ogopogo and the little fish he is chasing.

The drawing is old, faded and yellowed, as my nephew is now a grown man, so I authentically copied it onto my collage of a weedy lake. I missed most of the childhood of my nephew because he grew up in a different country, so this was a nice way to connect with him as a young boy.

My nephew Spencer, sent me a video of a nest in the eves of his house. I immediately thought it would be a great idea to paint and submit it for the inter-generational exhibition. It looks so perfectly cosy for those lucky birdies.

There is a great deal of texture and unexpected colour in this work. I was very pleased when it was finished and I'm sure Spencer will love it too.

The painting is now hanging in the Lake Country Art Gallery ART THROUGH THE AGES inter-generational exhibition which opens Wednesday 8th April for approximately 5 weeks. The gallery is on Bottom Wood Lake Road in Lake Country, B.C. Canada.

ART COLLABORATION - A wonderful learning experience not to be missed

ART COLLABORATION

There are many types of collaboration in Art. In fact there are as many forms of collaboration as there are artists. I have a friend that collaborates with her partner who is a musician, he plays music and she creates a painting inspired by it in front of an audience. I also follow a stunning blog by Alissa Burke who recently posted about collaborating with her husband on an art work: See the blog here. These are just two examples.

Last year my local gallery had an exhibition of collaborative art with the only criteria being that the piece had was 12" x 12" and collaborated on by at least two different generations. You didn't have to be part of the same family or even in the same country. You could even do things like a child or grandparent being the subject of the painting that another generation painted. One artists took one of his two year olds scribbles and built on it. I collaborated with my octogenarian mother, wo is not an artist, but is very creative. Below are some of the works we exhibited last year.

While I was volunteer docent at the local gallery I got a chance to collaborate at ART THROUGH THE AGES Inter-generational Exhibition. The table was loaded with media choices to play with and anyone could create, put their name and age on the back and leave their art for another person of a different generation to add to it. 

I chose a piece already partly decorated with ink and marker by a young lady who only put her initials D.K. I added warm turquoise handmade paper, which I wove into a mat as well as some printed paper cutouts in orange and olive which I clipped from printing scraps. I love it and so did our summer intern Jody who made this image.

Miss D.K. didn't leave any contact information, so I was lucky enough to take the collage home at the end of the exhibition.

ART WALK SUBMISSION - ACCEPTED! - Preparing for submission

I recently submitted to and was accepted for the largest and most well attended exhibition in my geographic area. Yay! Submission is an important part of an artistic career, and can be very challenging. Here is how I did it, so perhaps you can pick up some tips.

PREPARING FOR SUBMISSION

A few years ago I joined the daily painting movement, at the time I was struggling to complete a painting a month, but I knew that in order to improve I had pick up momentum and aim for a minimum of 100 paintings a year. In the beginning it was tough, but I did what many daily painters do, which is learn to paint small. Therefore, when the time came to assemble this submission, I was in the enviable position of having over 500 recent paintings to choose from. There is a down side to that though, the tyranny of choice. Here's what I did.

1. First I assembled a list of my favourite paintings and included all the paintings which I had sold (over 100 last year alone and I went back four years).
2. Then I sifted through them and whittled it down to about 100 paintings, then reduced it to 50 by comparing in groups and choosing first and second flight paintings. This can be done in your lounge or as I did on the computer.
3. Select the final 10 paintings.

#3 was the most difficult part of the submission because unfortunately, creating a painting each day forces an artist to constantly stretch and experiment to stand out in the crowd. This doesn't necessarily lead to a recognizable style and certainly not consistency in subject matter. The way I dealt with this was by looking for purchasing trends, counting the number of my sales in each genre. I also studied the praise I had received from patrons and fellow artists on social media (I keep these in a file when I receive them). 

Although it wasn't a major difference, it emerged that my most popular paintings involved water and animals. I then returned to my list of 50 paintings and selected all the water and animal paintings. I also selected one favourite abstract and one favourite collage because the criteria was that you could only include different types of work if they had been juried. I wanted the option to include different media in the final exhibition.

The collage of paintings at the top of this blog was my first selection. Eight out of nine of these paintings are sold, however, some are available in limited edition prints on my website here. I then let the images sit for a while and worked on my Artist statement, pricing and completing the forms. I keep bios and statements from previous submissions on file, so this was just a matter of cut and paste for me, but you can google it for help.

After a few weeks of contemplation I removed TUNNEL VISION, BEAUTIFUL EYES  and TOWN MOUSE from my selection and added BERT QUAIL (available), JACK and LUMINOUS BREAKER to show more consistency of style and subject. LADY IN SILVER AND RED (available) was added to show my collages, WHITE I (available) to show my abstracts and a nod to the "Step Forward"Art Walk theme, was the addition of WESTWOOD HO (available). Although some of my later additions have not yet sold because they are quite new, I felt they were important to keep the option for collage, abstract and fashion open.

I let this sit for another couple of weeks and also created a reserve list to choose from if I had a change of heart. This will also act as a list to work from when I hang the exhibition. Call me crazy, but I have a solo exhibition, Art Walk and an Art Bazaar running at the same time in September, so these lists will come in handy for those as well.

I had to photograph the work in the gallery because it was still drying and the lighting is a bit uneven, so I've also included a progress photo before the block was painted red.

Continuing with the Silver and Red Series, we started with a blank canvas panel, prepared the surface and assembled the same paint and collage pieces as the previous work. Red has been Charlotte's favourite colour for as long as I can remember, so we used some of her red knitting wool to start the process. Charlotte then arranged the multi-coloured foil pieces and faux diamonds. I then added similar pieces to the first in the series and a fired glass piece. I placed the silver tissue, silver leaf and block. Eventually the result was a work we were both satisfied with.

Having been around the gallery a lot during this exhibition, I'm always happy to see that people are fascinated by these four collages. One thing I see people do a lot when they think no-one is looking, is press the glass button in this painting. Perhaps they think something will pop out of the back???

I have always respected the wisdom of older friends and relatives; after all, they probably experienced the same situation and found a solution in the past, so why not ask their opinion? By living through wars and times of hardship, the older generation have learned to adapt, reuse and recycle, something we need to re-learn in the current economy.

Charlotte had the idea to add a print of my painting “Beautiful Eyes” to one of our pieces. We started with a blank canvas and the same collage items as the previous two in the series spread in front of us. Charlotte liked the idea of silver threads to catch the light and I had the idea of creating a sort of hat which would be fun to decorate. As I worked, I asked for feedback on colour and positioning. I placed the scrunched silver tissue and embellishments. Eventually the result was a work we were both satisfied with.
