Frida Khalo Series - #6

I see no reason to stop painting Frida Khalo just yet. Each portrait is a constant source of facination and learning. You will notice that the portraits are becoming less graphic and more like a real person. I observe closer and deeper, I am getting more in touch with Frida the person and further from Frida the icon.

I am also changing up different aspects of the creation: Changing the type of canvas, the color palette,  the means of preparation and texture. It’s impossible to be bored by the process or the series. I suppose I could accurately copy one of the earlier versions in the series, but where’s the fun in that?

My ultimate quest is not to make an accurate rendition, but to somehow capture the essence of her being. To add a certain something that cannot be described, but helps the viewer know her better, even without knowing who she is.

Mixed Media- Raw Edge Painting
2" x 6" on Strathmore Windpower

I have created this image to show the raw edge of the painting which in this case (not always) I've gilded in bronze like a Victorian calling card. It's a subtle but pretty effect. Naturally the black is the backing board used to show the effect and is not attached to or part of the original painting.

High flow paint allows the most wonderful happy accidents. I find it much easier to create an abstract painting with them because you allow the paint to find it's voice and then enhance it's natural beauty. My raw edge paintings are designed to be mounted to 6" x 8" or 8" x 10" backing board.

BLOOD MOON

I've given 24 hours warning for you to find a good location for viewing the blood moon.

The first Blood Moon eclipse in a series of four was on the night of April 14-15, 2014. The second is on the night of October 7-8, 2014. There will be two more in the series. This time the Blood Moon, is also a lunar eclipse. Before this century, a Tetrad hadn't occurred for 300 years. Follow the links below to learn more about Blood Moons.

How common is a tetrad of total lunar eclipses?
Why is the term Blood Moon being used to mean a full moon of a lunar tetrad?
Other times in astronomy you hear “moon” and “blood” in same sentence.

This is the total eclipse of October 27, 2004 via Fred Espenak of NASA. Visit Fred’s page here. Astronomy writers often describe a totally eclipsed moon as appearing ‘blood red.’ Here’s why the moon turns red during a total eclipse.

What is a lunar tetrad? Both astronomers and followers of certain Christian pastors are talking about the lunar tetrad of 2014-2015. What is a tetrad? It’s four successive total lunar eclipses, with no partial lunar eclipses in between, each of which is separated from the other by six lunar months (six full moons)

Blood Moons in Biblical prophecy. From what we’ve been able to gather, two Christian pastors, Mark Blitz and John Hagee, use the term Blood Moon to apply to the full moons of the tetrad in 2014 and 2015. John Hagee appears to have popularized the term in his 2013 book Four Blood Moons: Something is About to Change.

Mark Blitz and John Hagee speak of a lunar tetrad as representing a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy. After all, the moon is supposed to turn blood red before the end times, isn’t it? As described in Joel 2:31 (Common English Bible):

The sun will be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood before the great and dreadful day of the LORD comes.
That description, by the way, describes both a total solar eclipse and total lunar eclipse. Sun turned to darkness = moon directly between the Earth and sun in a total solar eclipse. Moon turned to blood = Earth directly between the sun and moon, Earth’s shadow falling on the moon in a total lunar eclipse.

I'm a bit late honouring A Y Jackson whose birthday was today, but I started painting just before midnight, inspired by reading about the great master. His early plein air work was far more delicate and impressionistic than the later work we are familiar with. I wanted to capture his soft but intense colours and a very loose interpretation of one of his early works was the result.

A Y Jackson Radium Mine

A Y JACKSON

Alexander Young Jackson, CC CMG (October 3, 1882 – April 5, 1974) was a Canadian painter and a founding member of the Group of Seven. Jackson made a significant contribution to the development of art in Canada, and was successful in bringing together the artists of Montreal and Toronto. He exhibited with the Group of Seven from 1920.

In addition to his work with the Group of Seven, his long career included serving as a war artist during World War I (1917–19) and teaching at the Banff School of Fine Arts, from 1943 to 1949. In his later years he was artist-in-residence at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinberg, Ontario

THE GROUP OF SEVEN, sometimes known as the Algonquin school, was a group of Canadian landscape painters from 1920 to 1933, originally consisting of

Franklin Carmichael (1890–1945),
Lawren Harris (1885–1970),
A. Y. Jackson (1882–1972),
Frank Johnston (1888–1949),
Arthur Lismer (1885–1969),
J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932), and
Frederick Varley (1881–1969). Later,
A. J. Casson (1898–1992) was invited to join in 1926;
Edwin Holgate (1892–1977) became a member in 1930; and
LeMoine Fitzgerald (1890–1956) joined in 1932.
Two artists commonly associated with the group are

Tom Thomson (1877–1917) and (1871–1945). Although he died before its official formation, Thomson had a significant influence on the group. In his essay "The Story of the Group of Seven", Lawren Harris wrote that Thomson was "a part of the movement before we pinned a label on it"; Thomson's paintings "The West Wind" and "The Jack Pine" are two of the group's most iconic pieces.

Emily Carr was also closely associated with the Group of Seven, though was never an official member.

Believing that a distinct Canadian art could be developed through direct contact with nature, The Group of Seven is most famous for its paintings inspired by the Canadian landscape, and initiated the first major Canadian national art movement. The Group was succeeded by the Canadian Group of Painters in the 1930s, which radically included female members.

More from my fellow intrepid and brave artists attempting the 30 paintings in 30 days here

Here I was working with Daily Paintworks Challenge to paint rocks. I also wanted to paint the halo effect caused by backlighting a leafy tree. In this narrow format you have to get clever with composition, cropping so the mind fills in the blanks. Here the leafy tree is only a suggestion created by branches dropping from the top of the painting.

This series is intended to be mounted on top of mat board. The image comes right to the edge where the dry paint creates a slightly uneven look. I suggest trimming the mount to a standard frame size 7" x 5" or 10" x 8". The painting comes unmounted, but for an extra charge I'm happy to do the work for you.

Like so many of my paintings I was inspired by an image and had a desire to create the same feeling of awe the colours gave me. The original image was of Denali National Park in Northern Canada with white mountains and light magenta Fireweed: This looks completely different, but I think the colour combination inspires the same response. There are also a few tasteful highlights in interference gold and violet on the flowers, which are not obvious, but which catch the light at unexpected times.

The paintings in this series are finished right up to the edge and have not been trimmed. This creates a slightly uneven edge where I've allowed the paint to harden without wiping it away. They look amazing mounted on colured mat board with double sided tape, which creates a slight shadow. The mount is then placed in a larger frame, I suggest 8" x 6" or 10" x 8" as a good size (without glass of course).

UPDATE ON CULTURE CRAWL

I was a little premature in announcing my presence at SPINCO for the Culture Crawl this weekend. There's been a little juggling and I now have the most fantabulous location for my work on at the newly retooled SAGE REALTY 426 Bernard Avenue, virtually next to Lululemon on the corner of Pandosy.

I'm over the moon about the location which is designer decorated in my favourite elegant but eclectic style. I'm hoping to suspend some of my work in the windows and perhaps even paint on site for some of the time depending on the somewhat changeable weather we've been having this week.

I dropped off my paintings at Artizan House for the A NIGHT OF ONE THOUSAND LIGHTS exhibition which starts today and runs each night this weekend. The location, 1009 Lawrence Ave, Kelowna, BC, takes place in the grounds of a rambling mansion and the volunteers have done an amazing job of the gardens. This is going to be a night to remember and must not be missed. See you there.

Some photos in my file are pulled out many times before I paint them and this is one of those survivors. My challenge was that the original image was quite bland and the inspirations wasn't coming about how to push the colours. Today I think I got it.

There is something about this new format of sketches which I'm doing to prepare for some larger canvases. It is an oblong 3 times the length or height of the small side. I've always struggled with the 1:3 ratio, but I seem to have turned the corner, just like I did some time ago with square compositions. I hope you enjoy it.
