SAWTOOTH RANGE AND BRIDGE - DAY 10

SAWTOOTH RANGE AND BRIDGE
by Sea Dean
8" x 10" Birch Cradle
Acrylic
On Exhibit at Skyway Kelowna Airport

This painting was very challenging. It's a case of loving a photo but the image just doesn't translate well into paint. The original image was a collection of simple shapes and almost monotone. I boosted the color but it didn't look right. I changed the color palette and that didn't look right either. Then I pulled out my extra heavy gel and palette knife and added luscious sweeping chunks of impasto. Still not right.

Back to the drawing board or at least the color wheel.

THE LAKE BRIDGE - DAY 6

THE LAKE BRIDGE
by Sea Dean
8" x 10" Birch Cradle
Acrylic
On Exhibit at Skyway Kelowna Airport

Painting our famous W. R. Bennett Bridge is my nemesis. That smooth elegant curve is ridiculously difficult to paint. I spent a few hours creating the painting and several days perfecting the bridge. Grrrr! But you can't paint this view without it.

It's also a challenge to paint a distant view of a town like this, how much detail do you put in and how much do you leave out? It is particularly important because most people that purchase my paintings at the airport are very familiar with the area and perhaps they even try to find their house in the scene. Good luck with that! This is an artist's impression painted with much artistic license.

TERRACE MOUNTAIN by Sea Dean - Frayed and Featherd Studio Tour

TERRACE MOUNTAIN
10" x 8" Deep Cradle Board
Reserved for Skyway Kelowna Airport

This painting has been submitted to Skyway and I'm sure they'll love it and it will sell very quickly. However, I do have other paintings in the series available. I can also paint one especially for you in a size that suits your space.

If you're in the Okanagan, come out to Ancient Hill Winery for the Frayed and Feathered Studio Tour. There you can see more of my work as well as prints and art cards. The tour is this weekend and you can taste wine and have a picnic lunch at the same time. It's a beautiful location overlooking the valley.

THE FACEBOOK POKE - Glimmer on the Lake

GLIMMER ON THE LAKE by Sea Dean
I've been working on this painting for some time. The challenge was the angle and the sense of distance. I've had some requests for local scenes and so I'm working on painting a few to exhibit in some upcoming shows. This depicts our new bridge which has made such a difference to the area west of the lake. I will take a better photo in the light tomorrow. It's late and the colour balance is a bit off in places, but you get the jist. Available on Daily Paintworks.

THE FACEBOOK POKE

I was poked today. I've had pokes before and never really knew why and so I ignored them. They seem to come out of the blue and not connected to anything I've said or done. Today I thought I had better investigate. This is what a Google gave me.

Following are the correct meanings of poking at facebook.
1. A “poke” is basically someone trying to get your attention.
2. If you poke someone not in your network and they poke back, you can view their profile even if your not their friend!

As I suspected, meaningless and vaguely dangerous.

Have you ever used a poke and why? Did you know about #2? Leave a comment.
