Somewhere in the melee of the holidays I managed to miss the birthday celebration of one of the greatest Artists of the last century, Henri Matisse. I've been studying his work, trying to choose a painting which is definitive of his style. It can't be done. Matisse' body of work is a kaleidoscope of changing process. This amazing Artist used Line, Colour, Decoupage and other techniques to produce prolific and stunning work.

At times in my life I've been an avid doodler and I love the study of line, so in the end I chose a line drawing, but in order to make it more challenging, I decided to use acrylic paint and fine brushes to create the line and practice my brushwork.

My technique was to lay down opaque Titanium white acrylic, lightly scribe freehand lines until they were near accurate and then to follow the scribe with Matisse Indigo. I then corrected and redrew many times until each line was as near an exact duplicate of the original as I could make it. As I corrected I used white acrylic to cover the errors, which resulted in a light mix of Indigo and white. I could have covered all the light blue with opaque white, but when I stepped back I loved the effect of the monotone shading. That lead to filling the lip lines with red, somewhat like a Geisha.

I'm very proud of this piece which took many hours to complete.

    1. Thank you Johnna. It's part of my MASTER SERIES. I visualize a whole collection of them on a wall together. This is the second in the series, and I generally paint one in celebration of the Artist's birth day. Matisse was 31st December.

    1. Thanks Susan. I'm enjoying it this time because Leslie is rotating the images so it doesn't matter much when you post. Much less pressure. I hope you enjoy the rest of the month. :)
