#96 of 100 Day Project
Happy Mother's Day everyone. I thought this was the perfect drawing to celebrate. Mother duck is keeping a beady eye out for predators as she takes her chick for a walk. He's staying close in her shadow.
The traditional flower for Mother's Day is a carnation. Wear a carnation to honor your mother on Mother's Day, white to honor a mother who has died and red for living mothers.
Did you know Mother's Day is not the same day around the world? I didn't until I started to juggle the different days and trying to remember them for friends and family. Today is Mother's Day in Canada, South Aftrica, USA and a list of other countries below. There doesn't seem to be any logic attached to why these different days have been chosen, just a Sunday without another conflicting holiday usually in spring or early summer.
8th May - Anguilla, Aruba, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Bermuda, Bonaire, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Curaasao, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Grenada, Honduras, Hong Kong, Iceland, India, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Malta, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Suriname, Switzerland, Taiwan, The Netherlands, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, United States, Uruguay, Venezuela, Zimbabwe
Australia and Ukraine - 2nd Sunday of May, which this year coincides with USA/Canada
Costa Rica - Always 15th August and it's a National Holiday!
France - Usually the last Sunday in May, but is moved to the first Sunday of June if it falls on the same day as Whit Sunday/Pentecost
Germany (Muttertag) - the second Sunday of May but if Pentecost falls on the same day then it becomes the first Sunday of May. Mother's used to get a medal.Mexico (El Dia de la Madre) - May 10th
Norway - 14th February
Poland (Dzien Matki) - 26th May
Spain - 1st May
Sweden - 29th May
UK and Ireland (Mothering Sunday) - 4th Sunday of Lent - 6th March 2016
Gold Star Mother’s Day is observed in the United States on the last Sunday of September each year. It is a day for people to recognize and honor those who have lost a son or daughter while serving the United States Armed Forces.
Confusing isn't it? Some more dates can be found here.
