Swinging fire balls and a wee dram

Custom Tartan created by Sea Dean

Scotland has long been associated with New Years celebrations and Hogmanay is the term the Scots give the occasion. For the traditions of Hogmanay click here where you will find the origin of the title of this blog.

Tartan

And .... More fun from the Jacquie Lawson Advent Calendar. For New Year I created a tartan for each member of my family including my father, who passed over 10 years ago, but he loved Christmas and New Year and is always present during my celebrations

My personal tartan above embraces my love for the combination of vibrant red/orange and sky blue. Lime green is my favorite colour for home decor and royal blue is the colour that works best on me for clothing. Like a painting, you know you’re done when it makes your heart sing and this highly personal tartan makes me want to dance a highland fling!

Tartan is today seen as an essentially Scottish symbol. It is a pattern of criss-crossed horizontal and vertical bands in multiple colours; originally a design in woven wool, the pattern is now featured on many other materials.

The English word 'tartan' is likely derived from the French tartarin meaning 'Tartar cloth'. We use the word for coloured fabric but originally tartan could be plain. The association of patterns with individual Scottish clans did not become formally recognised until 1815. Prior to this, tartan was used for military uniforms to differentiate the Highland regiments.

One of the most popular tartans today is the Royal Stewart tartan, favoured by Queen Elizabeth II. It was Royal patronage that first caused the popular craze for tartan and it was this association with British aristocracy and the military that fanned the use of tartan by punk music in the 1970s, when the unconventional use of patterned garments was an anti-establishment symbol.
