I've come to the conclusion after trying both methods for a while, that I prefer to blog like I paint, every day. For the last couple of weeks I've felt out of step and uneasy and I think it's because I like a sense of order in my life. Dis-ease breeds procrastination, which I've learned comes from fear and it's not good for my creativity. The fear here is that I would forget to write or queue the blog. So I'm going to return to blogging each day. My blog may simply be my new work with a description, or it could be a full Art lesson ... you will just have to wait and see what pops into your inbox. So above, are the four paintings I've completed since my last blog.

President Lincoln is my contribution to this week's DPW Challenge. The directive was to paint from a photograph concentrating on the values (shades of grey) and shapes, both negative and positive. We were directed not to consider the subject or the finished product but solely focus on shape and value. I found this very challenging, because every shape is part of a larger shape which is eventually the shape of the subject itself, in this case Mr Lincoln. Every brush stroke has it's own shape as well. I realized that when I'm painting I am constantly referring back and forth, colour gradations, shapes, negative shapes, measurements and standing back to view the painting as a whole. It was very very difficult for me to leave out the last step. However, I learned a bit of self control and I'm happy with the result.
