8 June 1848 Paul Gaugin was born in Paris, France.
In 1873 he married a Danish girl and fathered five children. He had a stockbroking background, so this was probably how he supported his growing family, but he was stifled by the whole situation. In 1885 Gaugin deserted his wife and children and became an artist.

In 1880 and 1881 Gaugin exhibited with the Impressionists. In Paris he painted with Pissarro and socialized with theorists Emile Bernard, Paul Serusier and Maurice Denis. He became friends with Van Gogh and visited him in Arles in 1888. They quarreled and that prompted Van Gogh to cut off his own ear.

Still searching for freedom, Gaugin joined the Merchant Marines and in 1891 sailed to French Polynesia. He painted in Tahiti and the Marquesas1891-93 and 1895. He was inspired by the colour and casual lifestyle but had little in the way of supplies. He used whatever material was at hand for his colourful works. Sadly, this is why they are deteriorating so badly now.

8 May 1903 Died at Atuana, Marquesas Islands
