I am so proud that the Mayor of Lake Country, James Baker, selected this painting for his personally curated wall in the show. The view is a familiar one of Wood Lake taken from the bench between Wood Lake and Okanagan Lake. I'm hoping this ens up somewhere in the municipal offices.

One of my favourite views on the way to Vernon B.C. from Lake Country, captured on a somewhat cloudy day with patchy sunlight peeping through the clouds. THe Camels are three mountains in the distance that look like camel humps. Such a great local name.

This is a collection of local views collaged together with artistic license. I love the light dusting of snow on the trees, which I have partially achieved with a gritty medium base.

This year two of the walls in the show were curated by local officials and this painting was selected by the local arts organizer, Ralph Donn for his collection. I was very honoured To have my work selected from over 900 paintings. There are no awards in this exhibition, so this is the closest thing to a blue ribbon. As you can see, by the time I photographed the wall on the afternoon of opening day, many paintings had already sold.

Yes, this is over 100 sq ins! A few artists in the exhibition are allowed to submit one painting between 100 and 200 sq in and another between 200 and 300 sq in. So, here is my largest piece. One of my favourites with deep texture and swirling abstract lines. As you can see, it works well hanging either way.

In the U100 Ihave it displayed near the floor with about 25 more paintings above it, and it still shines. A stunning piece!

This painting used to be part of a triptych, but one piece sold, so I've split up the two remaining pieces which are just as nice on their own. I've reworked this painting slightly, adding some trees to the foreground. The sister painting, White Mountain III, is in my solo exhibition at BLENZ in Westbank, B.C. They still work well as a diptych or pair, so you can take a nice drive throug the valley and pick up both.

This little Blue Bird is coming in to land near a bed of Day Lilies which are very popular in Okanagan gardens. For little birds they have very big feet and claws which being omnivores, they use to grab fruit, bugs and spiders, but they have also been known to eat small rodents. 

Western and Eastern Blue Birds have red, white and blue markings, with only the Mountain Blue Bird being entirely blue.

FAMOUS ARTIST BIRTHDAY - TONI ONLEY

TONI ONLEY

Toni Onley OC (November 20, 1928 – February 29, 2004)

Onley was born in Douglas on the Isle of Man: He moved to Branford, Ontario, Canada in 1948 with his parents and later traveled to Mexico where he became a professional artist and even later to British Columbia, Canada. Onley was very popular in B.C. firstly as a collage artist and then as a watercolorist.

The video below is a wonderful documentary of his life and work.



One of Toni Onleys greatest legacies of is that he fought Revenue Canada on many of the practices of  professional artists, and won. As a result artists in Canada don't have to keep inventory of supplies or works on hand. A great relief to many.

He died in a plane crash in British Columbia when he was 76.

THE SINGING BUTLER by Jack Vettriano

JACK VETTRIANO

Jack Vettriano OBE (born 17 November 1951 in Scotland as Jack Hoggan). His 1992 painting, The Singing Butler, is the best selling Art Print in the UK. The original painting sold at auction for £744,800, in 2004, a record at the time for any Scottish painting and in fact for any painting ever sold in Scotland. Click on the links for information about this famous work and the fascinating artist that created it.

If you aren't familiar with this painting where have you been?

I own a print of "The Singing Butler" and it hung in my home for many years. I found it endlessly fascinating, from the dappled treatment of the wet sand, to the grey skies, to questions about the couple, their servants and how the artist came up with the idea. It is probably instrumental in me returning to painting after many years working with different media.

Jack Vettriano paints slightly nostalgic works that depict fairly generic people, often with a sexual overtone. His early work while he was finding his feet as an artist and struggling for income, was much less raunchy.

Here is my analysis, of "The Singing Butler" taking into account what I have discovered about creating work that sells. Firstly, I note that all the subjects are facing away from the viewer: This creates interest and curiosity. The unusual light and the beautiful sand are enhanced by the darkened sky which heightens the honey tones in the sand and hints at this taking place just before or after a storm. Servants! Ah yes wouldn't everyone love to have a couple of loyal and attentive servants to shelter their employers from the rain and mop their brow? There is something about paintings with umbrellas; perhaps a suggestion of protection from the raging world? Then there is dancing ... women love to dance and dream of having a partner to whisk her around the dance floor or any location, even a beach! Beaches are a winning formula for many artists even for me in my land locked desert region. Take a moment to reflect on the composition with its straight lines and triangles, which always lead focus back to the dancing couple, yet create a sense of peace and dynamism which keep the eye moving. Lastly the chosen colours fit well in most homes, mainly grey, black and white with naples yellow for warmth (and to match the Magnolia walls) and that all important touch of red without which the painting would be quite boring. I've blogged before about the importance of adding red to the focal point. All in all it's a master work and it's no wonder it has become so famous and made Jack Vettriano a star.

FAMOUS ARTISTS BIRTHDAY - Edouard Vuillard, Post Impressionist

EDOUARD VUILLARD was born 11 November 1868 at Cuiseaux, Saone-et-Loire, France. In 1888 he attended the the Academie Julian where he socialized with many avant gard artists of the day including Pierre Bonnard who became a life long friend. He also became a member of the Nabi (click the link for a fascinating description of the ideals of the group).

Like many artists, he was proficient in many mediums and in 1899 produced a successful series of color lithographs called "Paysages et Interieurs".

Vuillard was a master of color with a fondness for yellow. Here you can see one of my favorite color combinations utilizing the complimentary pairing of deep yellow and violet. This painting also shows his quirky sense of composition, using a mirror to put the viewer into the position of a secret voyeur. Who can resist looking past the mantle to see what is happening in the room beyond.

Vuillard had a fairly long life and produced work well into his late 60's. The painting above was created when he was 67. He died on the summer solstice, 21 June 1940 at La Baule, France.

I recently found the time to go to a figure drawing session. The model was a beautiful mature lady and she posed with such a sense of calm. 

Initially I was hoping to do some quick sketches with black line and move around a lot, but I got mesmerized by the translucent reds and the interesting pose. I think I would prefer the image cropped just behind her head. What do you think?

This iPad drawing was inspired by an image on "paint my photo" submitted by Rose Herczeg. 

There is such a variety of sunsets. I love to see how different they are at differerent times of year and how similar they can be in differerent parts of the world. I found this one particularly inspiring because of the brilliant colour and the stark contrast of the pale blue sky.

I think this is one of my favorite drawings of the series. It's quite a challenge to make patterns without them becoming too regular and boring and I think I managed it with this drawing. I would love to see this printed large and displayed behind a couch.

Poinsettia makes a wonderful holiday card. I've cropped it to 4" x 6" which gives it a modern slant and my retailers are giving great feedback about the glossy look.
